I urge you all to give them a chance.
Okkervil River will be releasing their last album for a while in August, but it leaked a couple of days ago, and if any of you have time you should check it out.
It's called The Stand Ins and it's an addendum to their last album, The Stage Names.
They change a lot from album to album, so it's hard to say what they sound like.
The first couple were mostly acoustic, very melodic and harmonic. Then they had Black Sheep Boy, which was probably the best pretentious album of 2005. After that was Stage Names, which came back from the destitution of Black Sheep Boy with a much more straight-forward, zealous approach.
Stage Names was sort of a violently confident recoil against the critical nature of Black Sheep Boy. The Stand Ins, what I'm trying to sell you, is kind of a middle ground between the two albums. It's got this amazing tone that is hard to explain. It's broken down, busted, in a way that says, "Fuck it. We're whatever we are, and we're wherever we are. We're here, so we might as well put all of our cards on the table." It's all or nothing, desperate but confident.
Song sounds vary, but they range from.. Just listen to it.
Best Tracks:
Calling And Not Calling My Ex
Lost Coastlines
Starry Stairs
On Tour With Zykos
