Takes me fuckin 15minutes to get through POL.. then another 5-10min to select my character.. Just takes so long for shit to get through when connecting and Im not really exactly sure why >_<!

And if I want to change a character, forget about it! I dare not risk logging back into character selection screen for fear of getting booted back to POL.

After im in game, theres virtually no lag.. which im thankful for.. However, when I /search or check the Auction house.. I often times get 'search failed' This is the tell-tale sign that my network is fucked up again.

sigh.. any computer geniuses know what my problem is? Is there anything that can be done? My best guess is that the network im on just doesnt have enough bandwidth.. since my connection is actually decent sometimes.. But maybe it has something to do with the networks settings or something? bleh i dunno x.x Any insight would be appreciated.

Well, im' not sure about your particular situation, but i know that The school that I was at limited bandwidth, Thus making MMORPG's nearly impossible to play. This is because with the signal being used by so many people, limiting the bandwidth stops one person from sucking it all up, so that other people can't get on.
I'm assuming that's probably what's going on with your issue. And you only notice it at the beginning, when the transfer of data is the largest, for loading it up. Just my 2 cents.

Welcome to the college internet connection system.

Most agreement terms in things like dormitories and "college" made apartments (free hi-speed internets) indicates that stuff like downloading and online games are prohibited cause of bandwidth.

Best bet would be to have weird hours and connect when the network would have less people. :/

I had the exact same thing at my college last year. Except the PoL lag transfered into the game as well... so Id have 4-5 sec lag on everything. Kept me from playing the game for about 6 months.

I have that exact problem now. 4-5 sec lag on everything in game. Its quite funny to send a tell to myself and not get it back for 8 seconds.

Could to try to maybe contact your school and have them raise your bandwidth limit? Probably not for free, but maybe with a fee they could set you up with a better connection for gaming. Seeing as how all unversities love money, it might be worth a shot.

My college's firewall was hell so I commute now.
Online games can't get through, webcams can't get through, and you even have to really turn down instant messagers to work in html mode for them to work.

I must be lucky, we really dont have any of the problems you meantioned. It can get sluggish at times, but overall they seem to provide enough bandwith to support chat, webcams, and Online MMORPGs.

University would block all gaming bandwidth if it could. They don't provide internet for us to play games on is their line.

I raised a bit of hell today on SE's side and my schools side.

I think the problem (or an additional problem) was that some sorta port was closed or somethin..

<-- not a computer whiz

Anyways, i dont know what happened.. but a couple hours after a heated phone call, and my game is working like a charm.. during prime time..

so needless to say, somethin happened... but will it remain?

Well, I can tell you how it is for my school.

The dorms and the school itself use the same connection. The internet connection is redundant - meaning we have 2 connections to the outside world. If one goes down, the other absorbs the bandwidth (slow as shit, but we have a backup).

The network that internet feeds into is split into 2 subnets. One serves the dormitories and campus residence, while the other serves the university. The subnet in which the dorms are on, does not allow any communication among the peer connections. No network sharing - sorry lol. This also does not allow any games such as Doom or Starcraft.

Additionally, any dorm traffic runs through some device I can't remember what it is called. For simple purposes we will call it a server lol. I eventually get access to it as a CS student :yay: lol! It takes any traffic that is not over port 80, SMTP ports(set by the uni), and other ports the school has interest in, and lowers there priority. Under high traffic circumstances, if the server is slow, or the number of concurrent connections high, you will notice a severe slowdown. I have no problems, never had any problems (except when the main internet trunk was broken)

So in your case, it sounds like you have a huge network that either A.) can't handle all the traffic or B.) It really drops all priorities of anything but ports the school specifies.

I use to get 3-4mbs downloads from steam and 0 lag in ffxi. Now I'm lucky to get 200bs (not kbs) from steam and I get horrid lag in ffxi. This is at all times of day, midnight, 3-6am, noon, evening, etc. If it was simply lowered priority I would expect it to improve during the slow hours, but it remains constant. I have no idea what they are doing specifically, but it makes me want to live off campus.

my initial problem has disappeared (had problems getting through PoL and the initial connection)

but now I have a new problem.. the one rones described.. the weird lag.

I bet your S is quite low.. below 100 and maybe even below 50?

This is what im experiencing now in game.. and it takes a while for me to send information.

my R is perfectly normal though.

However, luckily for me, this only seems to persist during prime time hours.

So thats a relief.

Yea... One of the best things about Georgia Tech is we have one of the fastest internet connections in the world. Got to love state of the art engineering school. Now if I could only understand my classes...
