Feedback Open mocking of mental ailments

Honestly Rappa, if we were talking about someone who posted in Reality Sinks In for example and approached the subject with a genuine desire to help people understand and/or learn about a condition, it would have had a totally different outcome. If someone posted something heartfelt and real, you wouldn't see people popping up making fun of multiple personalities and other mental illnesses. I genuinely believe that.

So do I, thus my post before yours (dunno if you saw it before you posted or not). This topic is 99.9% about the flameboard in the past few days, not anything that may or may not happen in the future on sections of the site other than the flameboard.

Barring personal discussion in the flameboard, where such tripe does not belong, I only see threads bashing psychological disorders occurring in response to other mediums. For example: trolling, blogging, or derails (again, probably personal discussion)

Above is also valid for the point that this is unlikely to occur in RSI. If it did, I would not be a happy admin.

If these things appear in blogs again, the blogger should be banned for flamebaiting themselves, since that's what it generally is (in this context of course).

Oh so that's where it went, I don't have access to those. Agree though, if it's done in distaste (which in certain cases was obvious) they should be reprimanded.

If all this goes through, calling people retards should not be allowed because it too is classified as an emotional/intellectual disorder.

Including : Stupid, dumb or any other synonyms.

Normally, I'd agree with this except that this very point has already been visited. Calling someone "retard" or "hey, you dumbshit" was never found to be a real-life assault, while things like "I heard you're from China" generally are.

Take it from the "short, tough-guy, four-eyed Chinaman": This is the first time I've ever wholeheartedly agreed with Princemercury regarding...anything.

If shit like that appears anywhere (save maybe Flameboard), it should be infractionable, then bannable.

It sucks that you (Arc and Makelith) have to revisit this bullshit every three days or so now.

I only read about half of this thread, but in general couldn't you sum it up with "No commenting outside of the Real Life forum"?

Would seem to me that anyone who wanted information for person and honest reasons could get it there. All the bashers could also then be moderated accordingly.

I also agree this needs some moderation as well, to what extent im not sure. However my biggest concern is when people bring it up on FFXI (Or IN game) discussions, particularly on the flameboard. I think itd be a shame to see certain Illnesses associated with some of the players with poor character.

Example, if someone makes a flame about getting screwed over, or treated bad and someone says (@ The target of the flame) "Oh he's Bi-Polar, hes a lunatic" , people who dont know of that disease, or any other being brought up might think that all people with that certain disease are just as fucked up of a person.

Lately, in the last week or so, there have been an unsettling number of posts about various mental ailments. I don't want to debate who does or does not have these ailments, but should we as a community really allow all of this open mocking of these conditions? People are mocking bi-polar disorder and multiple personality disorder to name a few. I'm not singling out anyone either, but it's not just the people attacking those that claim to have these ailments that concern me, but also the people who (whether they have them or not) are basically making a mockery of their (supposed) ailments as well. It's one thing to be bi-polar or whatever, but it's entirely another to constantly bring it up and "act it out" to make yourself (and by proxy other people suffering the condition) look like idiots.

tl;dr: I think this whole "mental condition" thing on the flameboard and elsewhere has gotten WAY out of hand, and someone needs to step in and put an end to it, on both sides of the equation (the insulters and the "self-insulters").

I think this is the best answer.

Thank you very much for posting this thread rappa, I honestly was about to make the same thread when I got back home from my RL stuff(which was right now) And I agree with Miros and Sneaky, this should be handled on a case by case basis(although I'm not a mod)

I don't think its right on both sides of the coin, both posting "IM TURNING INTO AME RUN *EXPLETIVE*"

Nor do I think its right to comment that one should have sex w/ all of a persons personalities. Or a few other posts I saw in a few of the more recent flames.

Thank you for taking the time to PM me telling me your side btw, there were a few of you. I took the time to respond back for the most part, I honestly don't believe that either side of the extreme was very "kosher" in this.

I'm fine with case by case, as long as this current individual is considered to be the first case to be dealt with (both sides of the issue).

Fundamentally, any individual who brings their personal medical/psychological condition into an argument as a justification or excuse should expect to have that condition brought under scrutiny at the very least, and more likely attacked aggressively.

I could, for example, bring up any of the host of psychological ailments I have been diagnosed with over the years, but frankly, I feel people who use their conditions as a crutch deserve whatever ridicule they might receive. These are things to be overcome, or at the very least compensated for, not excuses for bad behavior.

The condition itself is not a joke, nor should it be an avenue of attack on anyone, unless the individual in question brings it up first. Once that happens, it's fair game.

This one line, also in my opinion is more then enough.
Case by case dealings are the way to go.

We can scream for more rules every time something gets out of control but more rules and restrictions only work towards a less fun enviroment on the forums over all.
Just keep in mind though, modmins do not see everything, this is a big forum.
If you think things are running out of hand there's always the shiny report post button.

Seconded? well, prolly 4th'ed or 5th'ed by now..

If it's not against the rules, when you hit that shiny report post button, what are you going to say? "This person is breaking a rule that doesn't exist"?...

Hence why I think it should be a rule, no using ailments in blogs or anywhere on the forum to attract negative attention. Word it fancy.

There are some posts on the RL board where individuals are seeking to understand better an ailment. Those are completely acceptable.

However I do remember a thread in the RL forums where a (female character, for identification purposes only) was asking people if or how she/he could potentially kill her/himself? May not have been that exact point but it was pretty damn close, and it did mention something about bodily injury. I think users who bring up topics like that intentionally or not, or even insinuating the subject should have their threads deleted and their entire subnet banned from the site. Posts that contain that type of material is a heavy potential for legal banter if anything should happen and QC came to light.

In all seriousness, not being an inconsiderate person if that's what you want to see the following as, if you want to kill yourself or have any distant thoughts about it, don't come crying to this site about it. Because in every case, 1. you're not going to kill yourself and 2. You're just looking for attention (hence, emo), which is where the rule I suggested above would negate and protect the user community in general. If you have suicidal thoughts, only you know for sure if you're just attention whoring or if you're actually serious, contact the police if you really want to stop. Just posting on an online forum is silly and those who do it know they are not serious about it. Which is why material like that should be kept off the site at zero tolerance.

I also remember Kelyon making a thread like that as well, I was pretty disgusted his and the other threads were allowed to stay on the boards, but he's already banned so problem solved (No rules broken so I didn't report anything at the time). I think the other person's name starts with a K as well, I can't remember exactly.

A little more on the topic than the just "leave it alone, mods are too busy, report the post" bandwagon most of you jumped on. We agree on that point.

There was no open mockery of any mental illness. We all know who you are referring to.. She came out with it, made a joke of it herself.. continued through that thread and another with the joking. So yes a few people joined in on the joke.. it was a good laugh.

If anyone has a reason to be pissed off let those of us who actually have these issues say so. Me personally? I say this thread is ridiculous.

Guess some people gotta have some kinda crusade going on all the time.

To draw a parallel in real life, think politics. Most people think politics are ridiculous, not because there are people that think similarly, but because there are so many people that think differently.

No matter what you think transpired, mental illness mockery of any sort is kind of mute since it is a RL attack (of sorts). Threads will get locked, posts can be deleted/infracted and all being done entirely independent of the fact it was open mockery of a mental illness while following the current rules.

I am satisfied at the moment with the threads being locked because, as has been the staff position for a while, people will get what they ask for. Consider that a new twist on the "make your bed and lie in it" adage. Some would like to see infractions/read onlys/bans. I am happy with any and all infractions given and the now locked threads.

This is where, in the past, I would typically lock the thread. I'm trying to avoid that as much as possible, at least, in SAF.

You don't need specific policies for every little thing that crops up on rare occasion. Not to say this issue is little or not worthy of a second look by the mod team, but this isn't a frequent issue. It may be an issue at the moment, but in all QCDN's years this has not been a big problem that required a new rule. In this case, any mocking was practically invited. Does that make it right? No. But it's certainly to be expected.

Just because there is no rule for this doesn't mean the mods won't handle the situation if it is reported. To report an incident of this nature you don't need to cite a rule that already exists. Look, one doesn't exist right now, and here we are discussing it. When using the report function, just explain your case. It's that easy.

Report questionable posts to mods. IF there is something that needs to be done about it, they will handle the situation. That is not a bandwagon stance. It's just that nothing else (to QCDN) needs to be done about the issue. If something needs to happen to certain individuals, then the mods will deal with it.

even if this said person made up the disorder, I beg to differ with what you said. I am in strong disagreement with how you handled your thoughts. I don't think something as mean as what you said belongs on the boards. That is a prime example on why I thought what Rappa said was correct, and thanked him for creating this thread in the first place.

As much as I've been biting my tongue during this thread and granted this may possibly be viewed as flamebaiting, I have to say it.

I am trying to understand your views on the issue Jyak, but when it comes from you, someone who has mocked people hiding behind the reputation system, it's hard for me to take what you say with any credibility.

Open mocking of disorders, obesity, sexuality, and problems pertaining to IRL all fall into the RL category. It's been a long standing rule that what is said in RSI, stays in RSI. So there's one standing rule against mocking anything that is said in RSI. Now if someone goes into the flameboard and openly mocks their own disorder/obesity/sexuality to the extent that it's a little ridiculous, you should expect people to lunge back at you and mock. So you could still say the RL info rule is still in affect (gp) but those who responded to the open mockery shouldn't be in any trouble as compared to someone who just barges in and brings up issues in the RSI board.

tl;dr version: Rules are pretty much already in place for this subject and they are meant to be viewed on a case by case study.
