So, in your opinion, what is the 'best' craft to have at 100?

I'm sorta trying to figure which craft i wanna go 'all the way' with.

I'd be looking for a nice balance of ability to make money (of course), as well as the crafting of useful items. to explain slightly, in my current un-informed opinion at the moment, i've pretty much ruled out Woodworking. why? i don't wanna be desperately trying to HQ staves for the remainder of my time in ffxi. from what i've seen Smithing can be crazy profitable, with a plethra of synthing options. there seems to be a LOT of gear and weapons to be made. granted, i could be WAY off base. any input would be appreciated. thank you.

There aren't really any crafts that make money anymore. The game has been out for so long that every craft has several people to make even the hardest synths. Going in to crafts now is a terrible reason now, but for making things at a cheaper cost to you is much better.

I like to make my own +1 melons, and such

I'm working on getting cooking to 100 to make my own pepperoni pizzas, seriously.

I still need to work on my bonecrafting, to make things like scorpion harnesses +1 and Genie weskits for myself and LS mates, along with making gil to fund a Mandau, but I'm wondering if it's worth the time and effort anymore.

You're off on woodworking. WW can be used as RNG to make arrows, NIN to make shihie, MNK/SAM/NIN to make cursed d.abj items. It relatively easy to level up to 69.

Smithing is great to make gear but you're looking at dumping a lot of gil into it.

Goldsmithing... if you have 20 mil just sitting around go for it.

Leathercraft is what seems to be a nice way to make some great gear, but with the exception of super rare synths I don't see it being able to make money but idk

Clothcraft is another like leathercraft, it makes tons of gear but unless you HQ something wild you're going to be losing money.

Alchemy idk anything about this have someone else answer

Bonecraft looks very interesting with a broad range of weapons, gear, and other useful synths

Cooking is useful to any player on any job at any level. You can always make food that will be useful in EXP parties, end game events, or food that sells quickly. Problem is you're not going to hit the 25mil jackpot if you HQ food but it will steadily bring in a good amount of gil

Fishing is great if you have time everyday to go out and fish for 3-4 hours and you don't mind incredibly slow skill-ups. Other crafts with enough gil you can PL them 1-100 in 1-2 days. This is far from the truth with fishing. About the max amount of fish you can catch in a day is 200 an even if you're fishing something well above your cap you may on get .3 or .4 total. Fishing is like cooking, good steady income and you don't really have to dump gil into it. There are a few quests (Inside the Belly) that can lead to fishing making some dern good gil if you're extremely lucky.

My advice, level several crafts that tie in together (Leather + Cloth) (Wood + Smithing) to 60 and then decide from there. When trying to get a craft to 100 you WILL need something else at 60 if you want to be a pro crafter (exceptions for Cooking and Fishing).

Not sure what craft is profitable, but Clothcraft is not, and is retardly expensive. 99 CC here, and people do less than 30-40k profit on some popular high level HQs. If you consider the amount of money and time it takes to go there, it's crap. Typically 99->100 is estimated to be 5.3 Millions loss in the current economy (-175K / blessed briault, assuming you are not too unlucky and get 1/3 skill up).

You're going off the average. I've seen crafters go 6/12 on them, sure they may do 1/12 or 0/12 the next day but the money is there with luck.

Wow. That was an amazing statement.

To the OP, while I would love to say that Alchemy is dead - it actually is far from it. There's always a market for consumables. I personally kind of like the small incremental returns of Alchemy whereI have lots of options to make a small (relatively) investment for a decent % gain. For example, if today I wanted to make some small money safely, I can just make about 20 stacks of Prism Powder. Some crafts have that luxury (Cooking) - some don't. You should pick a craft that fits with your personal style the most, and as another poster already said it'll be even better if you can personally make use of the craft. I took up alchemy to synth my own ammunition.

The chance of getting 6/12 on prism cape is ... 1/33624 wich is beeing 336 times more lucky than synthing a mahatma houppelande.

The chance of getting 1/12 is on prism cape is ... 1/3

When it comes to crafting, I am more likely to advocate that you level a craft that helps your job(s) out and less about what gear that they can make. As pointed out there are several crafters now with max crafting skill and once a piece of gear is made.. it's made. Not many need more than one scorpion harness or (insert other high end item).. and once they stop needing it they sell it and its back into competion with all the other SH that are being made. With consumables... you just keep needing it and needing it and once it's used its gone and thus constant demand. If you're making something you use a lot you are saving money.

I do cooking, and have alch to 60, if i get the time or the desire I will get other sub crafts. Clincher is, I dont always make my own food when I'm lazy, the ingrediants are a pain to aquire, or am in a rush. I profited the entire time I lvl'd ALCH but this was ages ago and during a high demand due to like CoP and such.

Also, when you look past what you might need from a craft, look at what things you do in the game and what materials you are going to have available to you.

I'll make it simple for you.

If you're the type of person who saves every drop you get while you EXP/Hunt/Explore/Adventure/Quest/Mission, then yes Crafting can and will bring in money. If you involve yourself in the craft and ALWAYS (read that last word again) have your 7/7 Auction House slots full. You'll end up ahead. There are a lot of recipes out there and sometimes it's fun to try em all out if you have the materials sitting around.

If you're the kind of person who picks up all your ingredients at the auction house... well the old adage-It takes money to make money-is going to be your bread and butter. And you're going to have to be VERY creative.

Either way, prepare yourself mentally for the GRADUAL (again another important word) growth of wealth. Once you think you're set, go for it! Pick whatever craft you think you'll enjoy leveling, or whichever ingredients for said craft you think you'll enjoy farming.

No craft has major profiting it seems, but done wisely it can be a steady income. For an example, if I farm all the items for meatkabobs including crystals, and buy items that are bought only from npcs, a come out very little ahead, unless I HQ a stack or some cheifkabobs; then I make some decent profit.
Figure also, depending on your job; Ninjas and Rangers would do well from woodworking, and rangers also could use boneworking.

I like cooking, fishing, and alchemy; They seem to benefit from each other and I never have to buy food or medicine.

People with this kind of mentality are the reason crafting is horrible these days. So many people think "ZOMG MONIES!" and flood the shit out of every single available market. I have never, NEVER gone better than 2/12 on a tier 1. (Not to say it doesnt happen) The chances of that are so ridiculously slim that any profit you make with that crazy 6/12 run, with be lost by the 10 0/12 runs you make after that. More often than not they will end up losing money, and ruining it for the few crafters who can HQ at a decent rate.

Crafting used to be good, until half the server decided it was a good idea to craft and now we have 90% of the 100+ crafting population with the IQ of a Russet potato. Exactly the reason I've been quite lax with my crafting since I came back. At this point its a hobby more than anything.

If you can farm as many ingredients as possible then you can make some money, if you have to buy then your gonna have a hard time. its all about keeping your costs down just like any business.

Cooking combined with Fishing provided you farm the majority of your own ingredients and fully utilize regional vendors. A) there will always be a market for food items. B) If you harvest virtually all of your own ingredients (including fish) everything you sell, even to a vendor, is pure profit. C) A penny saved is a penny earned. I would be willing to bet that if you were to do a detailed analysis of say the profitability of Cooking versus say, Goldsmithing, there wouldn't be as much of a discrepancy as one would think. Goldsmithing is more like playing craps where you can hit the jackpot one time but then lose that jackpot crapping out over the next several synths. Whereas Cooking is more like investing in a small, but steadily growing, business where the long-term, consistent dividends really pay off.

When I was leveling Rng, which was a LONG time ago lol. The amount of gil WW saved me was as good as making profit on a craft. Bolts are such a low lvl craft, you can save tons of gil, same with Shihei.

I don't know what ingredients cost now, but back then you saved a lot of gil all the way up to the point you start using demons because they're a higher level craft and you HQ less.

I figure saving gil is the same as making profit.
