So I've been beating my head in over why my computer was having hard lockups almost constantly, whenever I played any online game, or used certain programs like Azureus.

I did all sorts of things; replaced the PSU, Video Card, etc.

A fresh install of windows seemed to do the trick until the Windows Update:

Any owners of ASUS motherboards with Marvell Yukon ethernet chips should NOT accept a driver update from Windows Update for it.

Details Here: link

This was about a month of hair pulling. Quite a few ASUS motherboard are affected by it, such as the P4P800 series, A8N, etc.

Hmmm I have been having an issue in which after several hours of playing an online game or using my bit torrent client I loose my internet connection and the only way to get it back is to restart my computer. I have the Asus A7N8X Deleuxe though. It isn't mentioned in any of the sites I've looked at as being effected by that problem. If you hear of anything from a driver stand point that may be the source of my problem please let me know.

My bios is currently 1007 but reflashing 1008 or beta 1009 is a last resort.

hmm no problems yet *crosses fingers*

My Asus P4G800 crashed about a year and a month ago. Upgraded to the P4G800 Deluxe and works fine :D

Hmmm. Some of the Asus line have a known problem with Ethernet ports not working (a factory defect), but this is a new one to me.

I have an Asus, can't be arsed to look at the model #, but my pc would blue screen of death saying the memory parameters we're f-ed up... This was on FFXI... It took me about a week of trying to get rid of it, I updated every driver I could think of, even the routers.. ( ) But to no avail, I just had to live with blue screening every 1 hour to 15 mins in FFXI, for about another week, then it just sorted itself out >.>

I hope you enjoyed my story of how my pc can be a stroppy little bitch when it wants to.

The thing that makes you wonder is why windows update would have a driver for a motherboard on windows update and not rely on the manufacturer to update the drivers. Probably some security scare or something.

This the kinda times when hating Microsoft seems like a good thing.

Good post btw.

I'm seeing a similar problems on my PC.

It has got a Gigabyte MB however. My other PC (which I usually play Radiozo on) has got ASUS MB, but has not had this kind of problem.

Gigabyte PC crashed to desktop, usually it will do it again if I log on to POL/FFXI again. It also does this when I play other games, but I don't do that very often (Halflife 2/Doom 3). After reboot it generally works fine for the rest of the day. Maybe I should just reboot the PC immediately :)

I have an ASUS board also.. AMD 64 bit Processor ... don't seem to have any problems...

I can say though as a general rule I allow windows update to do Microsoft only updates... I have seen here at work too many times where the hardware updates cause more problems than they solve.

I've passed on that Nic driver update and vidoe card updates many time...

What I was experiencing was a hard crash: NumLock key doesn't change the light on the keyboard, and the only thing to do is manually reboot the system.

some guy said:
Two things I've learned from this:

1) If it's not broke don't fix it
2) Never ever accept a 'hardware update' from Microsoft.

I'm pretty sure its an ASUS only problem, but I suppose they could have used the same chipset on other motherboard brands.

Anyway, the fix for it is incredibly easy: Go into Device Manager and Roll Back your driver. I went from crashing every 5min-2hrs to being online indefinitely.

I'm not intentionally bashing Microsoft , but I mean, WTF those drivers are supposedly WHQL-certified. (I know, it probably doesn't mean that much.)
