PAC-MAN FAILS TO GENERATE ‘HALO’ HYPE
Studios unimpressed with script delivered by yellow head

Hollywood – Hoping to capitalize on the media attention and studio interest in movies based on video games following Microsoft’s delivery of the “Halo” script to studios Monday from messengers dressed as the character Master Chief, video game publisher Namco Friday sent reps dressed as Pac-Man to studios with a script about the adventures of the pellet-eating floating yellow head and his hair bow-wearing girlfriend. But insiders say “Pac-Man” looks significantly less likely to draw a multi-million dollar bid from studios.

Namco executives had commissioned the “Pac-Man” script from then-hot writer Joe Eszterhas in 1991, following the successful run of the Saturday morning cartoon based on the video game. But studios at the time proved resistant to the idea of turning a video game into a movie, so executives pocketed the script until this week, after reading reports about “Halo.”

“We thought Microsoft’s Hollywood strategy was a stroke of genius and wanted to build on that heat with a delivery from one of the few characters more popular than Master Chief: Pac-Man,’ said Namco USA VP of marketing Kaz Hirugito.

Namco insiders said they became worried about their decision late in the week, when reports indicated there was only one bid for “Halo” and it was significantly less than Microsoft’s asking price of $10 million. Nevertheless, with $100,000 already invested in building Pac-Man suits and casting actors with what Namco’s agents at ICM described as an “edgy, pellet loving, ghost hating look,” Namco went through with its delivery to the studios Friday.

The Pac-Man script tells the story of a young yellow head who becomes addicted to small pellets and is being chased by a band of renegade ghosts who believe his ability to eat pellets at a super-human pace would be a valuable weapon for their military. Joined by a fellow yellow head who wears a hair bow and whose appetite for pellets is matched only by her appetite for hot sex, Pac-Man finds a magical super-sized pellet that gives him powers to turn his enemies into lunch.

Every studio quickly passed on the idea, though, calling Eszterhas’s script too mature for the mainstream Pac-Man audience and adding that in the wake of “Halo’s” poor reception, video games are no longer hot in Hollywood.

Thank god! I'd like to avoid another Resident Evil... or Tomb Raider... or Street Fighter... or Alone in the Dark... Actually, I can't think of a good movie that was based on a video game.

<_<

what about Spirits Within?....that movie was better than braveheart or lord of the rings or even starwars!!!....Ok...I lied.

I wouldn't mind a Halo movie but if a pac-man one came out I'm pretty sure you would see me on the news for attacking the people who dreamed up such ideas.

THAT would be the movie I want to see more than anything else in the world right now. (English prefered, but in all honesty, I'd watch it in Japanese for need be. I just wanna see it... )

Are you crazy? While I will agree with you that the Tomb Raider movies, Street Fighter movie and Alone in the Dark (I haven't seen that one) movie weren't that great.

The Resident Evil movies however, kicked a lot of ass. The first one was a bit weird, I'll admit that much, but after watching the second movie the first made a whole lot more sense. If you're a Resident Evil fan, how can you not love them? They're actually true to the series, but show you events that weren't nessicarily included in the video games but very well explain some holes in the video game's stories. It's great! Not to mention as far as movies go, they were pretty good.

I liked "Spirits within"
It had an interesting story and nice animation.

I just wish they'd try again. Maybe leave guns out of the script this time. Make it more of a sword fighting thing. Perhaps a Gunblade would be aceptable.

What about the Mario Bros movie from the early '90s? Who could resist Jon Leguizamo(sp?) as Luigi, or Dennis Hopper as Koopa?

Sad but true, I thought this was a cool movie. Maybe it was because I was a kid, but, I didn't think it was so bad. Still don't think it's so bad, really.

I liked the Mortal Kombat movies myself and even liked the second Resident Evil movie. Alot of people hated Super Mario Brothers the movie but I really liked it. I guess I am just weird. But the stunts and tecno music in Mortal Kombat had me rewatching the movie quite abit. The second Resident Evil, they seemed too have put a lot of thought into it. True it was off from the storyline in the Code Veronica game but still I liked it. Super Mario Brothers, I can't really say what I liked about it cause its been a long while since I watched it but I remember likeing it.

The movies like Street Fighter II and Final Fantasy and even Double Dragon I did not care for. Street Fighter II and Double Dragon just seemed corny and made for little kids. Final Fantasy, well I was expecting a movie like the series with swords and spells. Instead it was like a Science Fiction movie set in the future.

Hey! Spirits Within was a good movie >.> good plot, good characters.. great animation.. good music. I really hate people think it was horrible.. most of those people tend to be ones that were expecting something to the calibur of the games.. if you really thought they'd make something to the calibur of the games, it'd be about.. hmm.. 12 hours long? XD have fun! Blah >.> Spirits Within was fine <.< FFVII: AC will be better. (I think)

They actually do a cartoon of Mario Brothers on Nickelodeon, not nickelodeon..... can't remember the channel name, but it's on Sky in the kids section.
