So yeah, recently i've been getting some crazy packet loss, of over 10-20%. This was not a problem before. My download speed is also affected terribly by this; I went from 500-700k/s on downloads to <50k/s.

I run a router with 2 computers hooked up to it, and I'm thinking it's the modem's fault. Modem is an RCA something, I can check if need be; router is MN-700.

Here's some signal strength info that may/may not have pertinence to this (I have no idea)

Forward Path:
Signal Acquired at 111.006 MHz
SNR: 29.8 dB
Received Signal Strength: -3.0 dBmV
Micro-Reflections: 21 dBc
Modulation: 256 QAM

Return Path:
Connection: Acquired
Frequency: 31 MHz
Power Level: 53.0 dBmV
Channel ID: 1
Modulation: 16 QAM

Any help is appreciated;;

Direct plug into the modem and see if it helps. That'll determine the router's role in this.

I can't access the internet if I do that, I get the "no connectivity" taskbar icon. I don't know why.

I assume that you're using this:
http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Wireless-802-11g-Station-Router/dp/B0000BZO58

I'd suggest what Cmdrfly said. If you take the ethernet connection from the cable/dsl/whatever modem and plug it into your computer you should be able to connect to the Internet. If not, you've got some issues with your computer.

Or..

Can you connect to your MN-700 with an ethernet cable to bypass the wireless?

I'm not using the wireless function on my router, it's wired.

I can't connect when it's not through the router for some reason, I assume it's an issue with my network settings in windows, idk.

reset your net settings on your PC, as they may still have the router settings in your network even after you unhook it.

You have a proxy enabled? Plug the modem directly into your computer then turn off your proxy.

Internet Explorer: Settings » Options » Connections (tab) » LAN Settings (button)
- all the checkboxes and text boxes in this window should be blank/unchecked

Firefox: Tools » Options » Advanced » Network (tab) » Settings (button)
- ensure the radio button "Direct connection to the Internet" is clicked here

I'm working under the assumption that this is your home connection, not a dorm / campus / office connection. The network infrastructure may wildly vary in those environments and as such you may need to have a proxy enabled.

Plug into the modem directly.

Run > Type: cmd

netsh winsock reset

repairing the connection does not do this, and it is amazing how often this fixes the problem. I'd say in 50% of the cases brought to me at work where "Page cannot be displayed" shows up when connected to a network, this solves the problem.

Winsock? Really? I would've recommended resetting the tcp stack first, but I've never tried resetting winsock. Any idea how that ties in with tcp? I've no experience whatsoever with winsock.

I only speak from experience. As technology inclined as I am, I have yet to take much of the networking classes offered to me under my major concentration. It works, however, I can not offer why or any interactions it may have. (Nothing negative can come out of it -- otherwise I would have experienced problems by now)

Do tell, how do you do tcp stack reset?

netsh tcp reset <logname>

Worked for me in a couple instances somewhat similar to this, where the users were unable to browse even though they had a legit IP and all the rest of the DHCP-granted addresses.

Depending on your cable provider, you might actually have to manually release your router's ip address before plugging directly into the cable modem. Some providers only give you 1 ip address with a 3 day lease on it, which is why you'd have to release the ip first.

Also, if you've checked everything else, a lot of times it can be a loose cable connection outside or you've got a cable splitter in the house that has gone bad or is "leaking" and causing the cable signal to degrade.

This is a fairly common misunderstanding I'd like to point out, with no intent of offense Euph.

DHCP address lease times are primarily for assuring that a node will serve under the same IP for that amount of time. In the computer world, lease is not equivalent to loan.

If he plugs another node into the modem, it (the node, in this case his computer) will still send a DHCPDISCOVER request and will still be issued an IP once the offer/request process is complete. Since it's coming through the same gateway (the modem) he will likely end up with the same IP in the end.

A 3-day IP address lease does not mean that they will stop issuing IPs through your gateway (modem) for 3 days. You can still request IPs within that window. However if he plugs the original node (in this case, the router) back into that modem, within the 3 day window, his ISP will recognize the router's MAC and will issue it the same IP it was originally given.

Techie came and fixed it ;p apparently it was some problem with the modem, I got a new one now.

Thanks for all the help though ;-)

what an anticlimactic solution to a request for help. /blist add fellow taru
