I am currently working on a magic resist set for PLD, mainly because I am determined to live through Ultima's Citadel Buster. With the gear I currently have I can reduce the dmg by about ~600 and that is using conservative numbers for the calculations. I have not been able to test real game reduction as of yet.

http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Rampart

The part where it says in the notes about the "currently accepted formula being Vit*2" is what I am questioning. Has anyone seen a thread about testing on this or done testing on it themselves? Is this correct, does Rampart use a "roll of the dice" reduction or a static reduction for it's magic resistance portion?

Feedback will be appreciated.

Peace,
Shmed

Not sure if this is of any help to you, but as far as I know it's definately VIT based in terms of it's reduction. It's supposed to function like stoneskin in that it absorbs X damage and/or one spell... so macroing in VIT for it should improve the amount of damage absorbed (similar to MND and Stoneskin).

If that's the case and it functions like Stoneskin, then it should work on a static formula rather than random number.

Like i say, might not be totally correct but this is what i've heard/read elsewhere.

The formula is indeed Vit*2, the only part unknown at this point is the cap. An easy way to test it, I'd think, is either get a BLU in ballista to keep using 1000 needles (as, for BLUs, this is magic damage instead of the normal cactuar's physical damage), or get a BLM to thunderIV a PLD without rampart (Elemental Seal'd so it doesn't resist), and then use ES ThunderIV again on the same PLD, but with rampart on. Rinse and repeat to test the damage reduction. Assuming it is indeed Vit*2, throw as much VIT as you can and see if you can find a soft cap on it.

hey ,Shmed what weapon do you use for Ultima's Citadel Buster?

I thought the pluto's staff was better for it, +20 light and -15% decrease to light element spells. It's what I've heard anyway, not sure if citadel buster is considered a spell.

Yeah ,thats why I asked. My shell did ultima on sunday and our PLD took very little dmg using the iron ram lance.

Thanks. I was planning on doing Diorama(I have never done ballista) with a Blu friend and test with 1000 needles. I can get about ~125 Vit with my current gear so 250 dmg reduction will be plenty to help me live.

yes, I do use the I.R. Lance just for CB.

From what I understand about elemental resistance gear is that you need ~150 to make it actually be helpful, maybe i am wrong. The -15% is interesting though since I have never noticed that and CB is a light based spell.

Thanks for the input.

I don't know if diorama is a great idea, for the 1000 needles anyway. I don't think I've ever had it -not- resisted on anything that matters. But then again, they are about EM in diorama, so it should work I guess. I love diorama, so I'm down whenever if you need an extra blu for no apparent reason.

And about the dark/apollo staff, its just what i've read for using on ultima, since I wanna try tanking him on blu sometime. Our nin's have survived it multiple times using it, so I assume its working >.>

Tried it once on my friends alt w/ light resistance gear way back when. He survived on ninja too... No clue how LOL, but he did.

Used Apollos staff i THINK if i remember correctly.

hmm Apollo's staff increase dark resistance though.

sorry meant the other one. PLUTO'S XD lol, i seriously cant remember the names.

Really isn't difficult to survive citadel buster, lol. And MDB/damage-% gear is a better call than light resist for it.

With 27MDB and -10% magdmg-taken CB does 200-800 dmg. (With Stoneskin up, rdm/nin.)
What I use: (Bold=What PLD can use)
Lamia Kaman+1 2MDB, Lamia Mantle+1 4MDB, Resolute Belt 2MDB, Dalmatica 5MDB, Duelist's Gloves 2MDB, Merman's Ringx2 -8%, Merman's Earring -2%, HP+ gear on remaining spots. (There are some boots with MDB iirc, use them if you have them.)
So with that and Shell V you should be able to handle CB without trouble.

I just did Temenos central floor 2 (elementals) we fought shiva, and with my mgc dmg -% gear and rampart i barely took 600 from Diamond dust, when almost the whole alliance died even with barblizz.

Merman's rings, Askar gambieras, Resentment cape and IR lance, along with IR helm and hands (rings and lance on macro)

It's a great set and equals out to -25% magic dmg taken and 5 MDB, plus the meager 5 elemental resistance from the IR set. I go with fenrir's stone/Happy Egg over the 1 MDB from kaman.. I cannot afford the +1 bow, but I would think 15-30 HP would be better than 1 MDB, since it isn't proven that 1 MDB is -1% magic dmg taken, I don't know the actual equasions though.

1MDB gives you somewhere around -0.8~0.9% mag dmg.
For rdm its easy to stack up this, however pld's might be
better off with mag dmg reduction gear.

i thought ffxi doesn't do fractions though? just rounding up and down hence the 299 thing about mnk h2h skill rounded down correct?

Well that is different, because it is every x number of skill levels that gets you an attack increase, and with all merits and skill + gear, it only gets you to 299, when the next increase is 300. I'm sure a career mnk can tell you what x is, but that is why mnks are so frustrated with everything.
