I was thinking of going Paladin on a new character, and since I've already tried Tarutaru out, I don't really want to make another Taru character. Between Mithra, Elvaan, and Hume, what makes the best Paladin overall? I know they all have their own potential, but I was just wondering.
Mithra= better MP, DEX, AGI for curing more, hitting more (hate), and dodging more.
Elvaan= better HP, VIT, STR, and CHR for taking more damage, for dealing more damage (hate), and CHR for extra Emnity.
Hume= good all-round stats, meaning decent HP, MP, VIT, STR, AGI, and CHR, but not nearly as good as any.

I'm askin' this because I don't really know what PLD's use as stats best for tanking, because I know each race has it's ups and downs. Galka also make killer PLD, but I can't see myself liking playing Galka, because I have a penchant for MP.

you would probably like Mithra PLD then if your out for mp

then prepair to get hit on too though

Well if I was to make a character specificaly for paladin I would go elvaan because I'd like to hit harder for hate and have the better defence of the 3. But seeing as how you like the mp maybe you should go hume and focus on curing for hate.

I'm not super worried about hate lol. Paladins are amazing hate-grabbers. Provoke, Flash, Cures. Plus, they also deal semi-decent damage. Personally, as a WHM myself, I prefer PLD tanks to NIN tanks in most situations... that's because I always know when to cast, instead of waiting, waiting, waiting, then BAM I need to dish out a Cure V.

If you really want to go for mp, then go taru. You'll get the most MP by far and since a lot of the endgame gear for pld's converts mp into hp, so lower hp won't be as big of an issue.

If you're going specifically for Paladin, don't make a Mithra unless you REALLY like the little kitty ears on the helmets.. ^_^

Mithra's stats are lower than Hume in HP, STR, VIT, MND, and CHR. You'll get more shield blocks and possibly evades (with some luck - PLD's evasion skill is rather poor), but when you get hit, you will get hit harder than any other race besides Tarutaru, and later on won't quite get as much HP out of Cure III and Cure IV due to deficient MND stat. To recap: You take more damage on a smaller HP pool and have weaker cures to refill it; not only that but you don't have Tarutaru MP pool to draw from for cure spam.

Elvaan are arguably the best Paladins - second highest HP and VIT, highest MND, and their MP and AGI aren't quite as deficient as Galka's (in the case of MP, Elvaan are a LOT better off than Galka).

Go Elvaan. I find that I never have as many hate or damage taking issues as a mithra or hume. Galka can take the most dmg cuz of their HP, but holding hate can be another issue if you don't have some type of MP gear.

I am an MP Paladin, meaning I look for gear that has +MP on it. I don't mind losing 20 HP for an extra 20 MP, since that 20 MP can totally save my life or a PT member in a hasty situation. Also as an Elvaan, I can dish out the most damage possible with my trusty sword to also help keep hate, but investing in +DEX gear would be a good option. I've found I start missing a shitload in the middle 50's without my Life Belt, so I'm happy I bought it for cheap when I did oh so long ago, lol.

Yea, we're not exactly made too. I'm sure a Ninja in light Gi armor can swiftly avoid a strike, whereas as a noble Paladin in heavy Iron Mustketeer's Armor is going to have a bit harder time avoiding the incredibly slow strike of a Giant, lol.

When I say I want MP, I don't mean I want a Tarutaru's MP. They have good MP, and it can be converted to HP. But what good is HP if your Vitality and DEF are low to begin with? It's like INT vs MP, you can cast more spells with MP, but they're not as effective without higher INT, and since more MP means longer downtime, it means MP is less effective than INT in that sense.

All I'm saying is that I'd rather go Hume, Elvaan, or Mithra, mostly because I can see those being good tanks. Like I said though, Galka is also a good tank, but I'd never play one.

By the way, thanks for everyone's feedback to this point.

imo elvaan is good for all jobs cept maybe thf and blm. but we can easily make up for our lack of dex or int in gear (and merits).

Yeah, every race can play any job as well as their skill and gear merit. The thing is, skill and gear are nice, but having the right race for excelling in that job is what it's all about to me. I want to be the best of the best... even if I'll never be like that, I want to be as good as I can possibly be.

I think Elvaan is the race with the most stat affinities towards Paladin. High Vit to take less damage, high Str to better hold hate, high Mnd for more effective white magic, and enough MP to get the job done. On a side note, Elvaan Paladins just seem in character. The knight in shining armor is the image of San d'Oria. While all races can exploit their various strengths to play Paladin effectively, only Elvaan really look right doing so. That of course is only my oppinion.

Going to also state Elvaan, for the same reasons everyone else is posting. They have high mnd, vit and str which are 3 of the important stats for the pld job. The only thing i've found that I lack being an elvaan pld is the MP, which isn't too bad because there are some really good equipment and armor that add that, and once you hit lvl 41+, you tend to always have a rdm or brd in party to cast refresh on you so you don't have to worry about this.

On a side note, i've lvled other jobs and i've partied with mithra and hume pld's, and maybe these players didn't know how to play the job very well, but keeping hate seemed to be a problem, especially if there wasn't a thf in the party. The other thing, is that even with good gear they took more dmg than any elvaan pld i've partied with, and I would notice the depletion of the whm's mp more so than with the elvaan pld.

Well, let me throw in my 2 cents, lol. As a hume Paladin, I guess I'm biased. If you get down, to bare stats, Elvaan and Galka Pallys rule. However, both of these have to make up for certail deficancies, mainly in the mp field. But, in all fairness...while every job, has certain key stats, none can beat the well roundedness of a Hume. Personally, pre 65ish, any Hume or Mithra Pally who has hate problems, simply is not doing the job right. Post 65, a bad ass DD can take hate from anyone, Ninja or Pally if they want. Now, I've never had hate issues. I lean my gear towards high DEF and VIT+, and never have an issue with running out of mp. There are many great Paladins, of all races...be great based on your skill and knowledge of the job, everything else, uber gear, "ideal" race...is just gravy on top, and won't matter too much.

/cry T_T

(im an elvaan thf)

Race to Race Conversions really arent that big of a difference guys. Id guess at level 75 hume has 5-10 less vit than an elvaan. And I think a Hume could hold hate better as paladin in the damage department. Elvaan Dex is pretty damn Low and they will whiff just that many times more. also more MP. BTW galka and Elvaan PLD can be a hastle in exp if they cant manage MP well. Hume can last a bit longer and allow you to get higher exp chains.

Im jsut guessing you could go online and ask if you wanted exact numbers. I know with Mithra Ranger ----> elvaan Ranger the Str Difference is miniscule. I tihnk its 3-4 at level 75. Those online calculaters arent accurate either BTW.

TaruTaru Paladin are just to short on HP, Stay away from that. When a paladin gets 1 shotted by Sickle Slash its just pitiful. Endgame they are pretty damn good though. They can support themselves a while with thier large manapool.

Im no paladin and in no one is all of this set in stone its jsut stuff Ive gathered from playing around with paladins. I would go with Hume because they are very well rounded and can play the job pretty well.

Dexterity is not the only thing important to thief guys. That Added Str is always nice and with all the available Dex gear out there he can make up for it easy.

Mithran thieves have so much damn dex with all thier armor but then they have 50ish Str lol. It would prolly do most of them better to drop some Dex and add some Str in there.

I took my Hume Paladin to 70. Didn't have too many problems ever, but honestly...

I'd go with an Elvaan Female to be a Paladin. Because really, the image is just so awesome. Elvaan really do have a high affinity for the job, and play it very well. As do Galka. As do Humes. As do Mithra. As do Tarutaru. Wherever they are lacking, they make up for it in another way, no matter what race.
So really, all you will be going for is image.

Elvaan Female 4tw.

Since this is a PLD thread, we can talk corrections in another thread.

You are right in that, STR never hurts. But that's pretty vague when trying to make a point.

For choice of PLD, I think an Elvaan or Hume makes the most sense...Maybe Hume for you, since you <3 MP.
