PAT ROBERTSON CALLS FOR ASSASSINATION OF
JARRED THE SUBWAY GUY
Hollywood – Just several days after Pat Robertson apologized for calling for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, the religious broadcaster has sparked another controversy by calling for the murder of Jared “The Subway Guy” Fogel. On Friday’s telecast of his Christian Broadcasting Network show “The 700 Club,” Robertson said: “How many more times do we have to see this man hold up a pair of his old, fat-ass jeans? We get it. You lost weight. Stop annoying us. If Jared thinks we’re trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it.”
For years, Fogel ate anything in sight, packing on the weight and reaching the 425 pound mark. Fogel attempted to lose weight using Richard Simmon’s “Deal a Meal” diet cards. Unfortunately, Jared ate the deck which led to emergency gastro-intestinal surgery. A few years ago, Fogel started eating Subway subs and not much else and ending up losing the weight. Instantly recognizable now from his TV commercials for the sandwich maker, he’s evolved from unwitting part-time celebrity to something of a pop-culture icon, making a comfortable living traveling around with his old 60-inch waist jeans and telling his story.
A number of conservatives and Republicans have criticized Robertson for suggesting that the U.S. government assassinate Fogel.
“What an offense that this man was a serious candidate for the presidency,” wrote National Review’s Richard Brookhiser, referring to Robertson’s 1988 run for the Republican nomination. “Mr. Fogel is an American hero. He is the one that turned me onto Subway. I adore the fresh toasted Chicken & Bacon Ranch sub. Do you know that it’s made with melted Monterey Cheddar cheese, all-white meat chicken breast strips, bacon strips, lettuce, tomato wheels, onions, green pepper strips, black olive slices, and ranch dressing? It’s to die for.”
Robertson has yet to apologize for his latest remarks, writing in his website, “Fogel’s 15 minutes of fame should have ended four years ago, but we’re still seeing him on television with that goofy smile. We can’t let these people go on like this. Enough is enough.”
Robertson also had some harsh words for “American Idol” reject William Hung but stopped short of suggesting an assassination.
In a late-breaking development, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is expected to go on television tonight, to respond to Robertson’s remarks about Fogel. According to the Venezuelan Diaro newspaper, Chavez is expected to say, “El que esta’ con los pantalones vaqueros gordos debe morir,” which translates into, “The one with the fat jeans must die.”
