I logged after work yesterday about 6 hours after server up (I work nights) and tryed to get in to dowload the patches. I was optimistic when I got the POL update on the 3rd try, and it downloaded the entire thing successfully. However after that, I found myself unable to log in to get the FFXI patch started.File Size for Jul. 18 Update
An update for FINAL FANTASY XI is currently scheduled for Jul. 18, 2005. Approximate file sizes and installation times for this update are shown below.
[File size for clients with "Chains of Promathia" installed.]
Windows Version
Downloadable file size: 43MB
>>Analog modem (56Kbps) users
Volume check: 10 minutes
Download / Unzip: 3 hours, 18 minutes
Installation: 2 minutes, 20 seconds
Total: About 3 hours, 30 minutes, 20 seconds
So I went to bed, and got up about 14 hours after server up, figuring congestion would be much less, and if I got it started before going to work, I would have the entire thing downloaded by the time I got home (I'm on dial up, and my ISP boots me after 4 hours of being online)
Anyway, just got back from work, logged on to see if I got everything downloaded, but found I didn't. I watched the file check, 1100-some files in the update, and figured I must have downloaded at least 800 of them. Here's what I saw a few minutes after the file check ended:
So this 43MB update is going to take me 10+ hours to download. Fucking come on SE, use servers other than the lobby servers to host the updates, make them available as a stand-alone download for PC users as soon as maintenance starts (yes this would be slightly unfair to PS2 users, but they would download their patches faster due to less congestion) set up some kind of system like BitTorrent for the patch downloads, or I dunno, maybe figure out who the hell these "anonymous third parties" are that have been sending DDoS attacks on you for the last year and do something about them.
