Ok, I have been hearing about this all day, and debunking it wherever possible. A lot of people, apparently, are going after Bill Bellichick for running up the score and I'm gettin sick and tired of it. These guys are paid good money to be the best at what they do, I don't see how you can expect coaches to hold back the rains when the lead is big enough, that's how combacks happen. Opposing coaches getting offended makes even less sense. Don't like the score? Play some defense.

You can't take chances in the NFL so how can so many people expect Bellichick to take this one? Please someone prove me wrong.

Nah, I agree with you. Most of the complaints were about the Pats going for it on 4th down with a 35 point lead. If you don't want them to run up the score, make a stop on defense instead of complaining.

PS, I hate the Pats, but the whining and complaining about them just makes it worse. Colin Cowherd put it best today when he said on his show today:

What would mock your team more, the pats scoring on you, or kneeling down at your 10 yard line with 15 minutes left to play.

I'm sick of people saying it's unsportsmanlike. It's the sign of a determined team who wants to win. It sends out a signal to the other teams in the NFL that the Pats mean business and even if they have a massive lead they're still going to keep playing till the end.

I know both sides of the argument pretty well, and I think it comes to a matter of opinion. At some point, you put in your secondary unit, stop "going for it" on 4th and 1 on the 7 yard line, in the 4th quarter when you're ahead by 37. At some point, it's conspicuous, and shows a lack of class.

In todays sports, statistics rule. ESPN commentary, point spreads and fantasy football are all pay heavy focus on these stats. How many yards so-and-so runs on grass when the tempreature is 32 degrees or lower. Maybe it's getting Brady and Moss their numbers. Maybe it's just setting loose highly skilled athletes to do what they do.

I've talked to folks who asked the same question as the OP, and there's no swaying their opinion. Far be it from me to say that it's right or wrong. To me, it's kinda like watching someone who takes 8 cents from the penny jar. Sure it's there for the taking, but if you need more than one or two, it shows a lack of something intangible.

I'm with the majority of the people posting here...keep playing to win until the game is over. I absolutely love the fact that New England is going to keep coming at you until you aren't standing on the same field as them any more. "We are better than you and we are going to prove it by beating you by as many points as you'll let us put up." That is the best attitude to have as a coach in the NFL.

Personally, I love it. More teams should have that drive to be the most dominant team out there.

Personally i'd argue the opposite, it shows determination, grit and a desire to win and to be the best.

I see your point, and it's not wrong. IMO, there's nothing sporting about watching an boxer get knocked down 3 times a round. At some point it's predictable and not even fun to watch. But that's just me.

Tired of this bullshit, the way I look at it... There's no team in the NFL that can match the Pats except the Colts. I don't blame the Pats for using the Redskins as an extended practice for next week.

I'm guessing the Pats win by 10 next week.

I'm fine with them playing how they are. They are taking the risk of a freak accident or injury ruining the season. The way I see it they are mad people claim the acts of the past are tainted by "Spy-gate" and are letting their play do the talking.

BTW my Colts win next week. =P

Running up the score crying only applies in Little League and other leagues where the only aspect of the game is suppose to be, fun.

The difference is with those leagues, there's always a way to even the odds because the better players advance faster through the age groups. My cousin is 5, he got put in instructional over tee-ball next year because he hits home runs and the other coaches are afraid of him nailing one of the other kids with one of his hits.

At the professional level of the NFL, there's nowhere to go upward other than running up the score on the other teams. I'm a life long Pats fan, and can't see that changing any time soon. This year's team is on their game, and they want to show it. If they don't find competition in other teams, they'll go after the records. The ultimate goal of any athlete is to be the best and be immortalized in the record books.

So yea, if you want them to stop running up the score, run a better defense. Scout better players. Make your team the one that runs up the score. Professional sports are suffering because they get stagnant. Teams like the Patriots are what gets people tuning in and buying tickets.

Two out of the last three weeks also, as they did it in the Cowboys game as well. I don't think they would have been going for it in similar situations if the lead was only 14 or so.

That being said, I'm not a big Pats fan, but I love what they are doing this year. The Colts are winning, but the Pats are dominating. Could be some real history made this year for Brady and the crew.

On a somewhat unrelated note: I remember seeing a ESPN "Fantasy Expert" before week 3 say "Sell high on Randy Moss. No Brady wide receiver has ever caught more than 8 touchdowns in a season." Glad I didn't listen to that asshole, as I now sit in first place in both my leagues, both of which I own Moss in.

I don't understand how someone who can use the internet would miss my point. I'm with the side that agrees there is no "running up the score" in the NFL, only child leagues where, like I said in my last post, are suppose to only be about fun. I'm curious now, how could you miss that?

Quit crying. Jesus. It was a chipshot fieldgoal. The choices are to 1) Take the 3 points (Which really would be running up the score) 2) take a knee (which would be insulting to the D) or 3) run a simple play and let the D stop you.

They chose 3. No trick play, no laterals, just a simple run up the middle. The skins just didn't stop it.

How did you not get that I was emphasizing your point?

Yeah, that's why they were ahead until the fourth quarter. Belichick is shit, he's only where he's at today because of Brady, end of story.

Putting my strong dislike for the Patriots aside, it takes more than one man to make a successful team. Brady is good, no question about that, but he couldn't go to Atlanta and make a significant difference. The coach is the foundation of a team. Without a coach, even a leader is at a loss. If Belichick was to be fired it would be the same team only because he has spent time with the guys. If he was never there, you could arguably say they wouldn't be the team they are today. Brady is the superstar but without a strategic leader, he'd be the sniper giving away his position by letting the sun glare off his scope.
