Well i got tired of playing the game on my ps2 and wanted to jump to pc, a friend of my mine is selling me this PC with the following specs for $150.oo bucks. My question is with the following specs do you think i should upgrade anything on it or can it play the game as is. I already have another PC for your normal internet thing, AIM and so on, so this PC will be dedicated to playing FF11 only. What do you guys think about the specs for playing the game?

E-machine T3830
Intel® Celeron® D Processor 335
(2.80GHz, 533MHz FSB, 256KB L2 cache)
Intel® 845GV chipset
512MB RAM
80GB HDD
CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive
8-in-1 digital media manager (Secure Digital™ (SD), Smart Media, Compact Flash, Micro Drive, Memory Stick®, Memory Stick PRO, Multimedia Card, USB 2.0)
Intel® Extreme Graphics 3D; 64MB Shared memory
AC '97 audio
10/100Mbps integrated Ethernet
56K ITU v.92-ready Fax/Modem

Might run a little slow with that much RAM.

The game is a port from the PS2 so graphics etc don't play as much of a factor as CPU and RAM.

Ask the guy ahead of time if he is would run the FFXI Benchmark on it and tell you the score at low res and high res.

I'll ask him too do that.

A friend of mine ran the game with less specs than your system, but had to run it at the lowest settings making the graphics look worse than the PS2. Your system should be able to run it, but it may not look as good as you would like.

Think his system was:
1.2GHz Celeron
256MB RAM
128MB PCI Video Card

I'd upgrade the RAM alil, 1gig should be fine and get a video card for it.
on-board graphics tend to suck, find out if the board can take a AGP or PCI-E card, if not you can get PCI cards but again they tend to suck IMO.

Do you guys have a link to a good video card at a decent price that i could buy? I sent my friend an E-mail asking him if the PC can use AGP or PCI-E card, or PCI card.

Sry I use UK sites so cant really recommend any places for you to buy a card, I suggest going for an ATI or NVidea card though, if the PC is for playing FFXI you wouldn’t need an expensive one. Maybe around $100?

I used a ATI Radeon Sapphire 9600 (512mb) on my old system, it played FFXI with no problems even though it’s an old card by today’s standards. It was AGP.

Now I have a Nvidea *something or other* PCI-E SLI'd blahblahblah... ^^ (£465)
But I use my PC for alil digital editing and games so you wouldn’t need to go that far lol.

Thanks for the help guys, the PC will be for this game only and your ocasinal web use, so i don't want to spend a ton on money on it.

You might have a problem getting a video card for it if the board cant take AGP or PCI-E.

If, for example the PC is from Dell, HP or any other mass manufacturing company there might not be a slot on the board, or the case might not be able to hold a card due to its shape lol.

I’d say you should ask your friend the case/motherboard form factor (the size and shape) as well as the slot types on the board.

It looks like it'll do fine. The graphics may not be all that great, but if you're anything like me, you'll deal. I use my sister's laptop, I don't know the exact specs, but I know it met the "minimum" requirements, but not quite the "recemmended" on the box. You just have to play with the settings and find one that works. For me, the background isn't perfect, but the characters and enemies look nice and it runs fine.

i845 chipset supports AGP I'm pretty sure. Look for an ATI Radeon X800 GTO2 AGP, go for <$200 cdn. There's other options I'm sure but I couldn't name any readily-available AGP card other than that one.

Don't use a PCI card unless you absolutely have too. Note that PCI Express and PCI are two different things.

$150 for that actually isn't a bad price at all. That kind of system would normally go for about $299-350 retail.

I'll be picking up the PC later this week. I'll be buying a video card and upgrade the ram on it. I'll let you know how it turns out, but for now my good old ps2 will be my main playing platform.

Well, as it's been mentioned, an AGP video card is the way to go for a machine like that. Stock Intel graphics are to be feared and shunned. I'm certain you could find a decent ATI or nVIDIA card for around $100 that will easily handle FFXI without serious slowdowns nowadays. The extra RAM is always a nice thing to have as well. I have to agree with what's been said so far, so I think you'll have this machine up and running with FFXI for not too bad a price at all.
