I was playing XI when all of a sudden, I lag out, DC, etc, the usual. I figure the cable modem just needs a quick unplug/replug to reset, but it isn't the cable modem. I do it anyway just to make sure, and sure enough it isn't. I then check my wireless router, maybe that went out for a second and needs a quick reset. So I unplug/plug in as usual, and everything seems to be fine. I come back up to the PC here and nothing is connecting. I cannot log onto POL, Instant Message services, E-Mail, nothing. After a few tries of messing around, I was finally able to open IE, but that's about it. I can browse the internet, which seems to be slower at the moment, but I still cannot connect to anything else. Does anyone have an idea of how to fix this? Thanks.

I've been disconnected from ffxi like that before and be unable to reconnect. I would then reboot and internet worked fine, but still unable to connect to ffxi. That means it is either a problem with the isp or ffxi servers. A main hub on the way to Japan could have been having problems. Problem went away in a few hours on its own.

On another note, lots of people have been posting in here about connection problems, its probably the same thing. SE is probably having server probs.

Hi Hi^^

Sup! you mentioned that you unplug the router, Did you just unplug the ethernet connections or the power suply cord also? If power supply cord, MOST not all routers, when they lose power you need to resetup the dns and gateway settings via the routers software/instructions, It happens to me fairly often, you will be able to get on ie but thats it and it runs ass slow, so give that a try, If your running a linksys and need help lemme know i can walk you threw it easly

Your cable company could have went under maintence and may have not notified the customers. (My ISP likes to not warn customers when the are performing maintence until after the problem is fixed) If you tried the whole unpluge everything, reset configurations, etc and the connectivity is slow/not working, that is most likely that cause. If you are impatient, you can always give your ISP a telephone call about the problem.

Sometimes POL has issues as stated in above posts.

You don't happen to be a comcast customer do you? Last night they had major problems. I could actually get on this site and ONE other...aim opened..occasionally. And I couldn't log into FFXI at all. Everything is back up and running this morning.

I to have been having connection problems, I think we all have, and it takes a hell of alot to screw up the network here at tech so I think it is on SE's side.

As noted above, might be a problem with your router's external IP/DNS config. Try resetting that stuff. Also, maybe assign your PC a static IP and point it towards your router's internal IP as the default gateway.

If you are Comcast that might explain it. For a while I lost HBO and I could only connect to certain website. Everything lagged and timed out. About 11pm last night my HBO came back on and my internet and basic computer speed was back to normal.

Start

Run

Type in "cmd" without quotes.

In command promt type "ipconfig /release" without quotes.

Wait a few seconds.

Then type "ipconfig /renew" without quotes.

Wait a few seconds.

Then type "ipconfig" without quotes

Look at your DNS Suffix and ip addy. Match? Good.

Do this everytime Comcasts fucks up so you don't have to restart anything.

I experienced problems with Comcast last night as well. I have 2 Comcast IP addresses on different Comcast networks. Cable modem -> switch -> PS2
-> PC router

The PC network worked fine but the PS2 did not. I was getting IP configuration with the PS2 via DHCP but could not authenticate to POL. I believe there was some issues with the DNS servers...as the Playonline naming schemes could not be resolved to IP addresses to complete the connection.

Thank you all for your input. Turns out they had a service outage in my area and didn't tell anyone. I'll remember all your tips next time, thanks.
