Not too computer savvy here for hardware. I realize basically all video cards worth a damn are PCI-express. Will any computer I get now have slots for those, or are some motherboards still running regular PCI?

Most of them will have PCI-express, but they will also have a few PCI slots for other things.

if you live in the 21st century, yes

lol Ok, just making sure. I have never built a computer from scratch before, so I was planning on picking up a real cheap Dell or something like that and upgrading the parts I know about.

Thats not really a good idea, the motherboard would be cheap too. The motherboard determines the stuff that can be used IN the pc, so chances are a cheap motherboard would mean you would have to settle for cheap everything,

Not to mention ordering the parts off newegg would still come in cheaper than a deal anyway. A friend of mine just built up a quad core barebones on newegg for 600 bucks. No vidcard/soundcard etc but still 100x better than any shit dell, not to mention no vista.

I wouldn't know the first thing about putting a mother board in a case though, unless it is just that simple. I am not looking for any kind of beastly computer. Just a decent upgrade from what I have now because I am running on old shit. I don't do much in terms of PC gaming except WoW which my computer easily handles now pretty well, but it's been about 6 years since I bought this thing so it is really outdated.

Software wise, I don't care if it is Vista because I can downgrade that easily and/or just use Vista and turn all the unnecessary shit off. I know my way around an OS pretty well, it's just hardware I am not to familiar with.

I was browsing Dell, and they are running some nice deals now with memory upgrades and free shipping and whatnot. I know Newegg is probably cheaper, but that is where I plan on getting video card and stuff. From what I see on Dell, I can get a Quad Core for like 600 and upgrade from there. Again, probably cheaper somewhere else, but it saves me the hassle and from fucking something up.

There are two versions currently available for PCI-E: 1.1 and 2.0. You don't need to worry about compatibility if you see that pop up. 2.0 cards will work in 1.1 slots (at a lower maximum bandwidth, but still very sufficient) and 1.1 cards will work in 2.0 slots at the same downfall.

Pretty much all retail computers have PCI-E slots now, but you will need to check the power supply to make sure it meets the requirements for the card you're wanting to put in there.

They usually got some nice deals on dells. Sometimes building your own doesn't even match them. Check http://www.gotapex.com/ and slickdeals.com, they usually post all of the latest sales going on.
