After tweaking most all my system setting I am still not happy, not happy to a degree that I sometimes just don't enjoy the game anymore. ;(

I have a DSL connection, most of the time my S-value is below 200 and my R-value is around 300 outside of towns and up to 700 in towns.

I have a GF4 5900XT (non-ultra) an AMD 2600+, 400Mhz Dual Channel 1GB RAM, and I get about 3400 on the hi-res FFXI benchmark.

My problem is that in game I experience annoying lag where I run for like 3 seconds, and then the game essentially pauses for half a second and then I run again for a few seconds and it pauses again. Very irritating, and I don't know what it is, but today it annoyed me so much that I actually logged out.

I run at 1024x768 with 1280x1280 textures, mip-mapping off, bump-mapping off, no AA or AF, no sound. IMHO that's a pretty low configuration and yet still I am getting these "lag" spikes. I am not sure if it is my machine, or my connection, all I know is that I am ticked off!

I am running the same video and background resolutions, but I am actually using mip-mapping and bump-mapping. My system does not spec as high as yours, but I have a Radeon 9700 Pro, 768MB of DDR266 RAM, and a P4 2GHz. I usually only experience lag when there are a lot of players, or alot of spamming.

I would check and see if turning off environmental effects helps any, also I assume you are using your chat filters to turn off battle, and specials for "others". Also, before you launch the game,do you have anhything running in the background? Like in the systray, or maybe a utility? Your specs should allow you to run the same resolutions with all the graphical bells and whistles turned on.

The only other thing I can say is that the throughput or integrity of you broadband signal differentiates. What you can do is do a tracert with the option to run continuously to a domain, and see if there is some obvious latency on one of he hops. Hope some of this helps....good luck. :?

Thanks, I will try tracert and see what I can find. I also read some threads on other boards talking about AMD chips not performing as well as P4 chips for FFXI, this isn't officially confirmed, but a good number of AMD users seem to experience performance issues when there shouldn't be any.

No, the problem with AMD chips is most people that buy AMD also tweak their system a bit. Most of these "tweakers" don't know what they're doing, and end up screwing their system up in some way or another. I've seen it time and time again at lan parties everywhere.

I've got an xp 2800 clocked as xp 3000 with a GF4 TI 4400 and 1 GB, and it runs beautifully. I've noticed some lag in towns and valkurm during peak hours, but other than that, it runs great. I think the lag you're witnessing is actual lag, and not video lag.

Those times seem awefully high to me. They are ping times, right? I've heard people claim they are bitrates.

I really don't know what those numbers are for sure, I am faily certain that the R-value is a ping from client to server, with all the easter crazy going on I was getting R-values of 1600+ neat the mogs.

I haven't really one any overclocking or anything like that, when I said tewaking most of my settings I meant that I have pretty much turned all the bells and whistles off and still I get the "choppy" run.

I read some more stuff, and I have seen people with similar specs to mine get 6000+ scores in hi-res. I think it's time to not work on Windurst fame tonight but on tweaking the heck out of my system instead.

I'll run the tests when I get home to see what I get. I've honestly never run them before, since I get good framerates.

Just ran this on my work machine, 3871-H.
Work machine specs are P4 2.8Ghz, 2GB 266MHz Dual Channel, GF4 Quadro 980. I am starting to wonder whether I am running my AMD system with wrong BIOS settings, that's about all that is left I can think of right now.

I'm running dual Athlon MP 2400's, 1gb ecc ddr, with a geforce fx5900 ultra. I run at 1280x1024 full everything with no issues at all. :)

After some BIOS adjustments and upping the GFX core and memory speeds a bit I not get 4650 in hi-res. Choppyness is still there at times, must be my connection after all, will just have to live with that.

Any idea what the actual DNS entry (or IP) of Quetzalcoatl is?

Run a tracert to the FFXI server to see where the holdup is along the way, if there is one. While I now score some 4600-ish on the benchmark, I am still running choppy even at 800x600 with all fx off. Annoying.
