I tried this game out today... is it the same as PSU looks the same to me but im gonna try and dl it for PSP(full gmae)

The Phantasy Star series has all been complete shit after IV. I doubt this one will be any different.

It's the same game but it didn't have the -online- multiplayer component PSU last I checked. It could possibly have it now but I doubt it.

So it even has the awful companion AI?

Yup. There was a 3x exp and meseta + drops month a while back, forget the name of the event, and the PSO NPC you had to escort through the dungeon was the worst. He was funny though, you'd be ownin' some mobs while he was back in the last room diggin' in his ass and he'd come in talkin' like he was hero of the day and ask how badass you thought he was. He was worse off than any of the other AI's to be honest. However, the new MAGs are actually very well controlled.

I'd probably have played more PSU if companion AI didn't require enemies to be ontop of them before they started doing shit.

I hear ya, that's why I just used the MAGs, they're 100 times more useful and give status effects.
