Photoshop question

I've seen sigs where items will stick out past the BG of the sig with no BG. What steps are done to do that?

i.e (I used Vanse's sig as an example)

The background has to be smaller than the canvas size. For example, if the canvas is 250 pixals high, then make the background image 200 pixals. The remaining 50 pixals of the canvas just have to be transparant. And it has to be saved as a GIF to maintain transparancey, and make sure transparancey is checked off when doing "Save As".

ah.... it has to be a gif, I was saving as a JPG. Thanks!

cant rember if 100% right gif is dots and jpg is when the PC rembers the ratio of every line
as jpg is best most the time but for sigs u need move if u want good 1s
this only from memory software is not my best place hardware is what good at on PCs sry
