I keep hearing about this on NPR. All I can say is that it's really sad that these people believe the only way to make a living is to capture people and hold them ransom. The saddest part though, the boat the captain that is captured was on was on it's way to Somalia with humanitarian aid for the people of Somalia. >_<

It's not the only way for them to make a living. It's simply perceived as a profitable, rather glamorous way to make a living.

I'm not sure how I'd handle the situation were I in charge. A variant on Q-ships would be the obvious answer in some ways, though you probably wouldn't need purpose-built platforms since the pirates typically have extremely limited actual military capacity. You don't need a 5" deck gun to sink a motorboat with some RPG-wielding punks on it, after all.

Or I suppose we could take a page from the Mossad and go all Operation Wrath of God on them.

Should borrow a tactic we used against German U-Boats back in WWII:

You see, back then torpedoes were expensive... so much so that U-Boats would surface to destroy undefended vessels with machine guns rather than use one when they didn't have to.

When the allies realized this, it was a simple matter to rig fake cargo containers on seemingly harmless merchant marine vessels. The sides of the containers were designed to drop down in an instant, revealing well-fortified machine gun and cannon nests hidden inside.

Suffice to say, the U-Boats starting having to use their torpedoes all the time, for fear of running into a wall of metal.

I say we start rigging fake cargo containers on all our shipping vessels and put one of these inside:

If we turn enough of them into chunky salsa, maybe piracy won't be such a lucrative prospect to Somalians anymore.

It's 2009, this sounds like a very silly problem to have. Anyone with me?

cause no one can find the ninjas to contact them that's why

Like he said, they wouldn't really be ninjas if everyone knew how to contact them now would they?

I agree. To have to worry about pirates during a time of WORLD problems is quite ridiculous. There should be other sources of income for them to provide a living by. As long as they don't go looting archaeological sites I'm fine.

Here's what we do though; instead of steadily increasing prices for labor, materials, etc, how about we just lower the prices of these things by a certain amount and save us all kinds of troubles? Seriously though, would something like that actually be plausible or am I just making shit up?

It is rather bizarre.

But you have to admit there is a little weird twist of humor in it when you hear the word "pirates" and "ships" on CNN.

I'm not saying the situation is good; no way.
Its just that its not everyday you hear something about "pirates" and "naval battles" happening in the open seas. =)

I'm just waiting to see if ninjas and samurais will return next in 2009. XD
