Theres a difference between inspiration and completely ripping off someones work. Its called plagiarism, and unless you have the artists permission you should not be copying exactly what they did in their work into yours.

If you don't have the artistic talent or creativity of your own, keep your stuff private and don't publically show off something that you copied.
 
So if your sig was hand drawn that would be wrong ? And it's ok as it is now cause it contains images that were sampled from the actual artists models, and layered in an atmousphere of personal choice ?

This is the "Fan works" section, where it's based on FFXI fan art, and suposidly accepts any kind of art.

Also in today leading art feilds, artists are hired for their ability to re-create images of what they see. Even if it's emulating an original peice or an original commercial peice.

What drove you into writing this silly lecture ?
 
Its style copying. Here is the sample below which was made by Kari as she has made all our LS members sigs and has kept the same style throughout all of them.

Here are a couple samples that have copied her style (the line drawing and job abbreviations aligned around them).

Style is identity, and having your work copied is like having your identity stolen by someone that doesn't have the creativity to make their own.

For people who still don't understand what I'm talking about, look at the hand drawn lines and job abbreviations lined up around them. Not only is the copied versions a really bad job of copying it makes me wonder if Kari feels like some musician who just had Weird Al Yankovich mutilate one of their songs.

I'm not trying to pick on Knightblade as I know he is just a beginner with this stuff and beginners tend to copy more then they tend to take risks coming up with their own ideas, I am purely using his case as an example to make this thread about. Going through school and even now later in life its always been a issue thats bothered me with why people can't just ask the author before you take original ideas from them, that's how its supposed to be done. And I think it's something thats good to be brought up in this forum because I know that there is a lot of this going on out there and I would rather see a much healthier community that can be creative individuals

Isn't it also one of the nicest compliment that the art is good enough that it is copied?
 
I agree with Deci.... Now if I could convince me to think like him... I could be rich!! Lol. Great point Deci, copying some elses work just becayse your too "scared" or lazy to make up your own is just pathetic, if you want something done the way an artist did it then ask the artist.
 
Ah, okay. Your original post makes sense now that it has some context.

The visual style of my old "Give a taru a fish" sig was blatantly ripped off from Akirus' sig at Titanictus, but I told him I was going to do it and had his blessing.
 
well, im sorry, i just thought it looked cool and im kinda new at this, i didnt really know it would be a big deal, but I won't do it again sorry >.>
 
I don't see a patent or trademark on it, so Knightblade has his right to try things out. Also, if someone copied my work I'd be happy because then I'd know my work was good. Kari isn't an official artist and I don't think he needs to ask for permission, but It would've been nice to.
 
Wow uh... I didn't even realize that was going on XD. I would of liked to of been asked and all if the style could be copied. I had made it specifically for our LS members as a type of "stand apart" style. ^^

As you can see, I specifically made them all alike so that the style could plainly be noticed as Purpose LS. While imatation is the highest form of flattery, and by no means am I angry or anything like that, like I said its just QCDN. But for the purpose of keeping the sig style LS based I would appreciate it not copied in the future. Well while I think I shouldn't have to go get a copyright on a sig design I use for a forum for a video game, I guess I can only ask politely XD. And if it is? Ah well, I'll think of something else! lol ^^

Though for Deci's defense, he did personally ask me first if he could copy the style I made for our ls because he thought it was well done but wanted the .psp version for himself so that he could edit his GS stats whenever needed. Plus hes a member of the LS so it fit in place just fine.

EDIT: On retrospect I should put "by Karihkinz" or something in the corner so people know who the sigs are done by. Because really I guess there was really no way to know who to ask for permission from when I'm too lazy to sign my own things lol XD

1.) It is a sig for a game. If someone cares about their artwork being stolen - they should contact the stealer themselves and find out why.

2.) It is called learning. No one becomes great at anything unless:
a.) they have a talent for it
b.) they learn it from a teacher

I remember when I was learning to fuck around with a lot of the crap in fireworks - that I too would look to other's sigs for inspiration. No harm is meant by it, and if someone stands to learn by copying my work for a non-profit purpose, who cares?

Wow - I just stole your sig... oh dear -.-

This is what you should have posted if anything Deci. This post hit home for me, because I attempted the same thing for a prior shell of mien and had a minor issue that was resolved in a less -- hostile manner. :coco:
 
On a lighter note.... Those are very nice sigs Kari :3 Rappa's has always caught my attention and I linger a few seconds each time I see it. Very nice job on all.
