 SquEnix has already had success in the online sector, with Final Fantasy XI on PC and PS2 snatching the publisher a 50% share of the massively multiplayer market in Japan. According to Square, FFXI has also "beaten EverQuest in America" and is "doing well in Europe."

Indeed with over 50k users on all servers @ 12.95+ a month, they should be doing pretty good. The constant upgrades and changes keep the game goin and intersting as well, but they can only afford this kind of maintenance because of the monthly fees. This was the problem with Socom and Socom2, with no money coming in to support new changes or constant upgrades there really isn't much we should expect them to improve.
As a side note ,however, the new Everquest is due to release soon and is expected to add a dark side to the environment and gaming experience. With additions such as playable monsters and high resolution graphics, they're expecting to pull many of us away.
I've never played any of the Everquest series, and honestly the only other online RPG i've heard anyone rave over is WoW. The screen shots from this EQ look pretty sweet though.
I also heard alot about GuildWars prior to its release, but the commotion quickly died after its release.... did this game suck?!?

Yes. Beaten a game that has been in steady decline for 3 years.

Pat yoourselves on the back SE.

haha!! it's so true XD so funny.. WoW is doing really well though. And I can't blame them.. I'm damn tempted with that Battlegrounds addition x.x it sounds like soooo much fun

That statement can be taken multiple ways, e.g. "Beaten Everquest now" vs. "Beaten Everquest in its prime."

Either way, if the game was in decline they wouldn't be working on a new expansion, bringing the game to another console, and steadily gaining market share (if you look at the numbers, WoW is finally hitting their 'bounce' period. I'm going to be watching pretty closely at their 1 year numbers.)

All in all I can't see FFXI closing up shop for another 5 years at least.

Keeping in mind this game was released in Japan in what... 2002? I think SE's done a great job keeping this many people attached to the game over such a long period of time, especially considering the average gamer doesnt spend nearly as much time on each title as they did back in the good ol' days (I still play multiplayer Doom on a regular basis, but even before that... christ, how many man hours were spent on Centipede?).

Re: Guild Wars. A guy I live with bought it and has spent some time playing it; it looked a lot less time-consuming than FFXI. If you're not engaged in battle, you can go to your world map and click on a city, and you instantly warp there. It does save the 15 minute choco from nation to nation and so on, but I don't think I'd like it much in XI.

There are some effing cool emotes in GW though, a lot that would look hilarious with a large party. You can dance, sing, play the air guitar / drums / some other instruments, do acrobatics, stagger, etc... and you just turn the emote on and it stays on. You could headbang to your air guitar for 3 hours if you wanted to.
