Well, that's not entirely fair. I really don't see how there's even close to enough information yet to jump to the conclusion that Scholar is a "gimp" anything. For all we know, it could end up actually being BETTER than Red Mage, or at least "on par" with it..

That it will be very much a Red Mage-like support job, however ... well, that much seems to be a given.

From the looks of it SE is making Dancer into a melee job. because it needs TP to preform it's enfeebles it will need to be fighting throughout the time to be of any use. (looks almost like a thf though to me)

so.. so far it's 1 melee and 1 mage, maybe they will add another tank job. no idea though, i just hope they make Dancer from Sandy cause i don't want to be from a country that made its Defining moment by the use of scantily clad men and women prancing around while the other nations are looking at them and saying “WTF mate?”

I think they will release a 3rd job that will be a tank..

Because at the JP Fan Fenstival there was a question

"What is SE doing about the lack of tanks?"

or something to that effect.

They replied:

"We cannot comment on that right now."

According to SE there's only two jobs this expansion.

Personally, I think it's just BS to get us all in a fluster before a huge NA fanfest announcement in order to get the biggest reaction. But if that never materializes, they've already said 2 jobs.

Except they're played nothing alike. How is that significantly similar? The end results may be similar. But the process to get there is drastically different. Not to mention Scholar has its own stock magic list.

thats why i said ATM. I know we have not seen all it has to offer.

IMO: Need another refresh class.

We made these jobs to fill the perceived lack of healers. For Dancer, we wanted a healer that wouldn't be required to simply sub White Mage and stand off the side.

With the reception that Dancer and Scholar have been getting, I'm sure there are more than enough people willing to play these jobs.
Now we just need some tanks, but it looks like these are the only two jobs coming in this time...

because the purpose of its abilities is to amplify and or magnify spells. done by both calculator and now scholar

and how many of the jobs in FFXI are exactly similar to their counterparts in FFT?
 
Yes, the effect of the abilities is similar. But the actual abilities themselves couldn't be further apart in that regards.

It's like saying Warrior and Black Mage are significantly similiar, because in the end, your enemies are dead.

whm and priest
blm and wizard
mnk and monk

maybe a few more but thats all I can come up with
but, reguardless of how the job does it the purpose or the job makes it what it is.
