Feedback PM vs. other private communications.

I am highly against removing any messages: PM, VM, IM, /tells, Infractions, Rate-up/s/rate-downs, etc.

When you click 'Submit', hit enter, or do whatever you do, you need to be accountable for your actions. This is global, you can't harass anyone via a private method on something like mail or a phone call / text message and expect that because it's private you will suffer no repercussions for your actions.

When you decide to say something, think about what you're doing before hand.

Don't ban posting private communications. The idea that the recipient has the power to make the content public will do some good in encouraging self moderation. "Don't post anything you might regret later" is a good plan. And, on the other hand, if someone does break trusts frivolously and maliciously, that person will hopefully lose all their friends and become a FFXI/QCDN black sheep for a while. Lots of us try to look like tough internet assholes who pretend to always hate the victim, but I think that's largely just an act, and bitter cynicism is just how videogame messageboards work. People who rampantly break trusts won't last long here.

I've written this once on the very thread that caused this whole fiasco and it went over looked so I'm going to re-write it here.

To be completely honest as soon as you press send you lose all ownership of what you wrote you are essentially handing it to whomever you sent it to to do whatever they wish with it. If you don't want it read by the public than the only way for this to happen is to not send it at all.

(Forgive my lol RL comparison).
The whole wanting a message you GAVE to someone else to never be seen by others is like when that shy highschool cheerleader who sent her boyfriend a nude pic that ended up all over the internet and embarrassed the hell out of her. the only true solution would have need to not send said pictures to another person.

All I'm trying to say is that after the message is in their possession (which was caused by yourself) then what ever they do with that said message is completely out of your control and 100% their discression.

Although this should never even have been a problem since the person who wrote the pm doesn't care whether or not it is in public view. Even though his opinion on the matter becomes null as soon as he or she presses send, the person who decided to delete it did so without consent of either party which basic does make him out to be flexing his guns for the sake of showing he's the boss.

personally i think as long as you have permission from both parties the pm was sent to, it doesn't matter since you have their approval(unlike in deja's flame). That was the part of it that made it downfall so quick imo

Ok first off i did technically have approval by audino because he did said, "but I didn't personally care that he did it. I really don't have anything to hide."... Thats permission to me.

Beyond that i would like to thank Skaw and everyone else who continued the conversation after i was gone which turned my 2 week ban for repeatedly posting PMs (even tho for the post i was banned on there was no PM) into a 3 day one... You guys basically got done what i was looking for on this subject but... perhaps in a more tactful manner.

Now if only we could get them to stop editing and deleting posts that do not break the 3 main rules of the flameboard...

One should be held accountable for what one says regardless of how they chose to convey that message. Just because one choses to hide their threats, insults and harassment behind a weak veil of privacy, doesn't mean they should be afforded the guarantee of that privacy. If someone choses to send words to another person, one should expect that they have enough conviction to stand by them. If not, that means they probably should not have sent them in the first place.

However, I am a person who believes in fairness. I believe if you enforce a rule in one situation, it should be enforced in all situations, but this is not one of those times. As BoF pointed out, posting a pic of an ex-girlfriend can be considered along these lines, but I believe a line should be drawn in that situation and similar instances for the game (cybertells and such [not because I have to worry about that >_>]). In those regards, the intent is not to bring about light onto a situation or wrong doing, but to intentionally hurt another person. Perhaps it was a wrong choice, but that's not a choice they should have to pay for nor publicised for all to see.

Let them post PMs if they want. PMs should be all that different than you'd talk to anyone else publicly. If you have two different personalities, then that's creepy. If someone wants to post a PM for some kind of actual concern, they should be allowed to. If it's for a flame because some douchebag is bombing their PM box with shit they don't care for, fine. Who care? You'd think that the possibility that a PM could be posted public would serve to deter acting like a jackass in PM. Maybe that's me. Whatever.

Leave it up to the individual's decision if they want to take something public. It's no different than anything else that comes out publicly from a discussion that was initially 1 on 1. Happens all the time. People think of the 2 people as they will. The person bringing out had their intentions for doing so and the public will determine what they think of it all. No big deal.

Yesterday, I was reading some fine print on the bottom of a pic message that someone had sent me:

Please be aware your friends can forward your picture, video, and album share invitations to others or post the unique Web link to your share invitation on any number of sources (e.g. blogs), through which others could also gain access to your online photos. If you have private or sensitive photos you are sharing, please share them only with those you trust.

This is the internet. Nothing is sacred here. I personally wouldn't post my PMs or rate ups/downs, but if someone else does, fine. Everybody's nosy to a point.

We're not talking about a screenshot of a video game character here, but a recorded log of a private conversation.

Yeah but back to what GP said, it's a private conversation that occured in-game rather than over this forum. The Mods here control and oversee the rights of the users whereas conversations that took place elsewhere they don't oversee.

I see both points btw, I agree with you Skaw I also agree with GP, bc what I think it comes down to is a play-on-words.

Is it? Looks like his opinion after the fact to me.

So, you knew he was gonna say that then right? You must have some ESP or some shit.

Well, I had a post written, then when I rechecked prior posts I realized I was going a direction I don't think I have a need to go. Now that I have everyone curious, I have to ask.

If Deja's ban was lifted, was it lifted in light of the fact that there has been all this support and posting PMs isn't going to be restricted, or will it still be restricted but the support was enough to "forgive" Deja?

It means someone has made a mistake and that if by some chance they made a typo and sent it to you they have had the enclosed information basically copyrighted. It's either that or an empty threat to keep you from opening it.

All that is basing that your not on someone else's computer in which you would need permission to go into their email or it will be violating the right of privacy by unlawfully accessing their system.

Whether it's either of the situations both are under the law, this site however is neither of those situations and is not within the arm of the law allowing the recipient to do as he wishes with what he is given whether the sender likes it or not . If the sender tried to prosecute the recipient he would be laughed at and would lose a ton of money on a lawyer for not being able to control his tongue.

Hey hey hey

I didn't do this for anyone but myself. I wanted my god damn question answered, not ignored.

Honestly, I dont see what the big deal is.. just to go over what others have said. If you type it and hit submit (BAM) Its no longer yours, it now belongs to who you send it to. But when you are A. Trash talking in Pm/tell/ im/ whatever, that stuff is fair game.. but if its B. Like sorry this bad thing happend to you or something along those lines you see where im going here then that stuff wouldnt ever be posted. People only post this stuff to "try" and back up what ever point it is that they have.

In a place like qcdn where you hear all the time "Pics or it didnt happen" You have to be prepared to see that stuff on here. IF you go on the game and talk shit in tell to someone and you know they frequent this site.. bet your ass its gonna be on the boards the next day. So, let the posts stay.. who cares.. Everyone has to be responsible for what they say. Reguardless if they think they are safe by saying it in pm/tell/im.. you get the point. Too many people feel that they can say what ever they want and no one will know.. Well my friend those days are over.
