Poetry, is it actually helpful?

Ok... so I've already screwed up a couple times in my relationship by doing less than romantic things in times where romance would be expected. I'm trying to make it up to my girlfriend, and I was planning on giving her a poem that I wrote about her.

So here's my question (this is for ladies to respond only, please  ): is poetry actually romantic? Do women want poems from their boyfriends? I wrote a poem about how great she makes me feel, how great I want to make her feel, about how beautiful she is, and how I love every part of her body (even her hands, which she's very self-concious of). Before I hand write it up, I was wondering if this is a good idea...

(If you want to actually read the poem, let me know and I'll PM it to you).

I, being a writer in the past, have found that it really depends on the girl. My most recent ex loved the romance of a poem, but I've had girls who just found it too mushy for a "real guy" to do. Something about the picture they have of you will determine the success I think, if they are in love with you for your masculinity, its hard to show any other side without making them a little put off, but if you can get them to understand your sensative sides as well, you'll have a better relationship in the end. The key is in being yourself, 110% of who you are when you're with that person, and if you really ARE the kind of person who would write a poem, then it can only help you.

How can I put this without making an ass out of myself... Ok, I can't, but I'll tell you anyways.

I'm not really the definiton of a "masculine" guy. I have a small girly frame, I bruise easily, and I have long wavy hair. I'm not "small" persay, I'm still 6'2", 155lbs". But yeah, she's not dating me for my pure masculinity. I'm a charmer, what can I say. I get by with my smile and sensitive personality. Women would expect something romantic like this out of me, I just haven't done such so far (which is why she's probably a little disappointed with me). But yeah, Sensitive guy > Tough guy  .

i just died laughing. sensitive personality? skinny guy with a dirty 'ffro full of greasy hair who dresses like he's black and is whiter than the KKK membership.

you can go very very, VERY wrong with poetry unless you're good with the written word and/or she likes poetry. if it's bad it's gotta be the "he's so sweet for trying" kind of girl too....

if you can't win her back just remember, you're in kingston ontario, the easiest place to get laid in Canada.

No.1: You're a guy, of course I'm not going to be sensitive to you. That'd be gay, which I'm not (no offense to homosexuals, I just don't swing that way).

No.2: Yes I'm skinny, hence the 155lbs. But my hair is NOT a fro, nor is it greasy. Can't say the same for you though, you dirty little gremlin...

No.3: I don't dress like I'm black... I never have. Since when is jeans and a T-shirt dressing black? Stop stereotyping... And anyways, I've taken a turn towards nice sweaters, like the one I'm wearing now...

No.4: Whiter than a KKK membership? Huh? Yes I am white, no shit. I don't even want to know what you're poking at here.

No.5: I know poetry can be good OR bad, hence me asking for advice.

No.6: I live in Kingston Nova Scota, not Ontario. And I'm getting all the sex I need right now, so don't comment on that.

No.7: I'm not trying to "win her back". I have her locked up tight, thats not the problem. I'm just trying to add a bit more romance to the relationship, since I've screwed up a couple times. She had a mental script of how she wanted our relationship to start. I just haven't played my part very well, screwing up on the first kiss, first "woohoo", etc (And by screwing up, I don't mean I did it wrong, lol, it just wasn't as romantic as either of us would have liked).

Just my though, talk to her about this script. Even if she tells it to you in detail you will always fall short of the mental image in her head. It is a losing battle that you will be blamed for when it really is not your fault.

On poetry, it all depends on the girl. There are so many different writing styles that what you write could come across really romantic or very sappy. Something to think about is during a romantic evening to write a poem together. You write a line, she writes a line.

ahem... lol, you're so easy to {provoke}

You want romantic, I say stay away from poetry unless you know what you're doing. I like to do more simple things like spending a night together making hand-made cookies and feeding them to eachother. Something as simple as that drives many girls wild. Chocolate is an aphrodisiac, so I suggest chocolate chip cookies. Now I'm not saying "oh do this and you're golden" but it's an idea to try. Romance is also being spontaneous. Girls like to be taken by surprise. Flowers or a card, just because are always a good idea, unless they're allergic (I'm not advertising but Hallmark "thinking of you" cards go a long way.) My personal favorite thing to do is a random trip out to a field at sunset, and watch the sun go down and then gaze up at the stars while lying side by side. I'm a sap, I dig all the romantic stuff but thats just because I was raised to be a very caring person and I just have a thing for treating girls like people, not objects.

Yeah Tauro, I feel the same way about romance / women. I was raised on the fact that they are people, and that they deserve as much respect if not more respect than that which I show my friends. So my entire life I've done this. Our 2 month anniversairy is coming up this Saturday, so I'm gonna try and pull something romantic out of my ass. I just have to think of something really good...

No, seriously... I could have sworn it was Montreal. St. Cathrines Street baby!!!! :D :D :D

I now realize 99% of you have no clue what I'm talking about. I guess I'll go there and "camp" for a hooker. AFK...

But honestly, your not doing anyone any favours by being anybody else than who you really are. If you really want to write her a poem, then it will be reflected in your words. If you don't truely want to write the poem, she'll know you faked it... and thats bad juju.

And on a side note... Anniversaries are yearly. 1 year, 10 year, 3 year, whatever. There is no such thing as a 2 month anniversary. :)

This is the kind of person I am, and my feelings are reflected in the words I wrote. I'm just wondering if poetry is the best way for me to express my feelings towards her.

And at age 16 & 17, there are monthly anniversairies, because few (I'm not saying none, just very few) couples last a year+.

If you are going to write her a poem I'd accompany it with flowers...makes it seem a little more serious.

I've already bought her a dozen white/pink roses (which she loved). Should I stick with those, or try something new? If I should try something new, what are some "I really care about you" flowers, as opposed to "I want to get in your pants" flowers?

I think any flower are great, it's more the thought that goes into them than the actual species of flower. Maybe ask her what her fave kind is?

In my experience...lots of little romantic things>one big one. My husband used to leave me small post it love notes on the stereo of my car so that I'd find them on my way to work in the morning. A single flower..whether a daisy or a rose (or anything in between for that matter...as Sabia suggested, knowing her favorite flower would be a good thing) left for her to find...there are lots of ways to show that you are thinking of her..and that's really what we want. We want to know we're being thought about.

If there is a real connection between you she'll get over the "imperfect" once in a life time moments...believe me...they rarely turn out perfect for anyone. I recently rediscovered a "sticky note" my husband left me over a year ago...and it brought back such wonderful memories...those are the things that I cherish. The once in a lifetime moments...those are what we look back at and laugh about now..lol

/em puts on his jacket and shoes and go to Emily's...

Well, the poetry was a hit. Definetely. Thanks for the advice guys. I guess this thread is now done.

(By the way, Emily is my girlfriend).

The base where I live is CFB Greenwood. If you're actually coming here, then yes, you can log on or something. But if you're going to CFB Kingston (in Ontario), you're on your own.
