POL NEWS : Battle System Improvements (02/22/2008)

congrats to SE for being f*cking retarded. I mean seriously....who releases an expansion to a game, when the damned expansion isn't f*cking complete yet. And now we know why they do it. They're to busy making retarded changes like this. I could give a rat's ass what music plays while i'm exp'n. What in the hell do you thing Itunes or Ipods are for? And who seriously cares what color the mob's name is in? Red, Yellow, Purple, Green, Rainbow, Poke-a-dots, I don't give a shit.
I'll admit, the macro thing sounds ok-ish, too bad its FIVE YEARS TOO LATE!!!!!

Dear Square-Enix,
Please make sure that no matter what you do, you don't attempt to polish your existing game, even if you do it alongside other improvements. Since this will be something other than exactly what we want to see, you will be hated, criticized, and everyone will cancel their accounts in a fit of rage.

Furthermore, improvements of any sort are dumb, and should never happen. Shame on you for thinking of implementing anything that isn't a direct solution to [insert problem of the day here]. We hope your offices burn to the ground for this heresy.

Sincerely,

Someone please tell me how server-side macros is a bad thing?

It's not, they could do their more important homework instead of procrastinating and goofing off with inferior assignments.

The mob change color for alliance seems like an ok idea as well as the macros but how important is that? You need a lot of space to run FFXI so you most likely have the space required already and the average player can tell which monster belongs to who, although not exactly with alliances but it doesn't seem that important to know.

If it's an event people know ahead of time which target to do X action to and the other one to leave alone.

Um, dude, just because this is what we're hearing doesn't mean this is all they're doing. Besides, take a look at all the other updates we've been getting about this next patch. There's new missions, new campaign stuff, (arguably) new weapons and equipment...

Sure, I can see the justification that WotG was released before it's time, but you can't say they're working on piddly stuff instead of real content. These updates (which are a lot more frequent, it's like an apology of sorts) are just the tips of the iceberg.

Granted, I don't have the confidence that SE will do something radically game altering anymore, but I do have a little faith that they're a bunch of mature adults who aren't so completely divorced from the playerbase that they'd give us a stone if we ask for bread.

Uhh quit? because this is going to happen no matter what and I rather not read something like this again.

Would be nice if they gave a choice between battle music, eh eh? Then again I already swapped some music files.

Ex. Xarcabard = FFVI Opening march theme to Narshe (Remix)

Lol We're changing to already slightly redish-purple that mobs change for alliance when you don't the thing to an even more redish-purple.

i doubt the macro thing will effect anything besides mabye add like a tenth of a second to the downloading data screen. I beleive initialy all macros will be stored, but then once change are made they will only update when you zone like they do now anyway

so if anything it will add a .1 second more of a delay on zoning.... but i could be wrong..... I was once

Thank you.

I can see why people are disappointed, but an improvement is an improvement. It'll be nice to hear battle music while on bard...I think.

Battle music for mages is a good idea. Sometimes, partying in silence made the experience boring. Of course, back when I levelled blm, battles were against IT++ mobs and they generally took forever. In the current age of 30 second fights, I imagine adding battle music for mages could backfire. A merit party will sound like a skipping CD. Ah well. I can hit mute and use my iphone if I find it annoying. I think for the grind to 75 though, if I ever do it again (doubt it), this will be a nice addition. I don't care much about the macros. Blm is my only job, I only have 90 macros for it, in a single book. I don't need tons of resources in that regard.

Yes, this and battle music is better than sound crapping out in Mt Zayolm's Flan camp. Sometimes you stop hearing the sound of you spells and it's annoying. At least you will have the battle music.

I must be a rare person to like this news alot. The battle music has always been a large part of the exping experience for me, and I used to engage the mob from a distance on blm just to hear it. Of course I meleed on rdm... still do... and this was one of the many reasons why.

Perhaps I'm silly, but thanks SE

Meh, doesn't really bother me either way. The new battle music thingy might be a fun novelty for awhile. But then I'll just turn all music off like I have it now, and turn on iTunes. As for server side macros, I think that's awesome. I never used Windower macros, and I like to jump ship to the 360 every once in a while because 65" tv is well... effin' awesome.

It isn't, for you legitimate goody two-shoes.

For us evil horned hackers that use Windower macros, it implements a method for SE to "FIND THEM AND DESTROY THEM".

The new macro palettes are great in that it gives you more palettes... that wasn't really the problem that drove so many to Windower macros though. Change from 6 lines to 12 or 18 and the majority of WM users would likely switch, if only to further protect their asses.

WMs are still significantly less laggy but the lines is the big kicker.

I'm not saying the improvements are stupid, I'm saying that the fact they went out of their way to announce that they aren't changing battle music and a mobs name color is changing is retarded. Give it to us in one or two chunks like you used to SE, it was much less of a cock-tease that way.

I personally don't like the battle music. I wish they'd give you the option to have the normal bgm's continue to play when engaged in battle. Because of how annoying the battle songs are, I typically turn the in game music off.

I doubt its saved every time you log out.

I'm guessing the change applies to alt + shift + ctrl + b/r, for back-upping and restoring macros. Earlier it only backed up the macroes to your computer, thus preventing you from loading them on another computer or platform. I'm guessing they're changing it so that using this commany (b for backup, r for restore), it allows us to backup, say, our PC's macro, then press ctrl + alt + shift + r to load the macroes on Xbox.

Try it out yourselves. Press ctrl + alt + shift + b on the character selection screen.

As much as I'd love for SE to crush third party advantages, I was under the impression that SE was aware of the third party windower and made a comment to the extent that they weren't going to persecute the use of such? I know there was something around the time of the official windower that suddenly made things a lot more okay than beforehand. Am I off base?
