Caution on Account Hacking

Recently both ABC News and Yahoo! News have reported that over 10,000 websites have been infected by hackers in an attempt to steal the IDs and passwords used in various online games.

Based on the articles, it is apparent that hackers are heavily targeting online game accounts. As we have often reminded our players in the past, we ask that you continue to monitor and update the security of your system and Internet connection to prevent any harm caused by infected websites and malicious programs.

If you suspect your account is compromised, please contact the Information Center and provide us with the details. If your account is compromised outside Information Center business hours, please place a helpdesk call in order to contact a Game Master (GM) to report the details. Depending on your situation, we will offer all the assistance we can, including temporary login restriction to prevent any further harm, as well as instructions on how to proceed from there.

We are currently reviewing the restoration policy for players who have had their accounts compromised. Our goal is to expand the assistance towards affected players by restoring their accounts to a state that's as close as possible to the state it was in before it was compromised. Details on the restoration policy will be announced on the official web site once they become finalized. We appreciate your patience and understanding in this matter.

They are both an interesting read.

And Korea... and a few other places

All MMO company maker need to do is to block IP from china! and not allow proxy!

Worth a try, but dont know if that gonna do much. I wonder if this news breakout on hacking that base in China have anything to do with recent US and China relationship worsen due to Darfur situation. I just found it to be coincidence to happen all at once. First is some movie director's name who i forgot, stop helping China with opening and closing of Olympic in Beijin. Then recently about Darfur protesters blocking the flame carriers near Athens. And now this breaks out. I will think those researchers already knew about the hackings, since online games hackings isnt new anymore, but they pull this out now because of all these happenings with China.

Lets block Japan too when they start hacking...o wait...can we still play FFXI if we did that?

or.. SE make those virtual keyboard, were you type your password by clicking letter with a mouse

i know some online banks do that for extra security...

if hacker consider MMO games just as valuable like your bank account, they should really use those

You don't have to type in your password everytime you login. Banks you do unless you store passwords within the program.

Anyone could have the password that you use when you first login, and if they're not at your house, it does them no good (provided you haven't given away your IP address and allowed remote desktop connections to your pc).

The olympic shit has anything to do with USA? lol i could had sworn it was with Tibet I think its the area thats protesting to china to gain independence.

Olympic to my opinion, should not be involved with politics, but in fact, it did. There are people use that opportunities to put pressure on China's side to stop supporting Darfur government. There are news going around with Darfur protesters blocking flame carriers' path on the way to Beijin. Our government decided not to get involved, so i guess Darfur protesters turn to China.

SE just needs to ban all Chinese IP's, period. Then again, even though that'd prolly work out GREAT for all us legit players, SE would lose 1/2 their revenue, cause we all know FFXI isn't really bringing in any new players.

Because of course there are no legitimate Chinese players in-game or even on these forums.

In response to the keyboard thing since there seems to be confusion... there are games out there as well as a small amount of banks that use it as an extra security tool for passwords. What the program used does, is re-organize a "virtual" keyboard - each time you click a letter on there - and then use the click as an actual emulation of a typed letter. This in reality garbles your actual password, and is becoming exceedingly more common.

This can be easily seen by downloading Maple story (no idea, never played it), in which they require you use a similar interface to type/click out a password.

Well, China's gone with threats now. They threatened EU and told them to stay the fuck out of the Tibet situation.
