POL News: Celestial Nights (06/22/2007)

Might be a silly question but is there somewhere I have to register my pol mail account to log on to the linkshell community? I tried both my mail accounts neither work and yes the passwords and numbers are correct.

Login the same way you login to POL. same name/password
Crappy interface somewhat on that thing I think.

ah ok seem to be down at the moment everyone flooding the site

By that logic any love story where the parents hate each other is a ripped off version of romeo and juliet/rapunzel/mulan.

The romeo and juliet story by shakespeare is a ripped off version he made of the original tale anyway(which actually did happen). Also the plot is quite different . The only similarity to romeo and juliet is that they both died(not even at the same time or within the same day) and that the parents hated each other. Quite frankly since when did inlaws get along with each other? jk.
With rapunzel the only similarity is that the princess's daddy locked her in a tower. Lets be honests here. Where was he supposed to put her? in the dungeon?

I cant comment on mulan since I've only seen the disney version which probably had events butchered to make it more marketable. Somehow I doubt the princess disguised herelf as a man and jioned the army without anyone noticing..

Edit: I just read a translated version of the mulan poem and it in no way has any resemblance to the disney film so if you were baseing it on that then you were way off in trying to compare it to that.
That being said the plot doesnt similar to quite a few tales that I unfortunately cant remember atm.

Naw, I was just commenting on similaries between SE's story and other tales in a mocking way. But in reality this story is very original and tragic. That girl dying after her 100th piece was very sad, all for love...

ok, lets get on those Haiku's

This is stemming from the Tanabata Festival in Japan.
People write wishes on strips of paper (sometimes in poetry form) and attach it to bamboo stalks along with other decorations.

Here's the background story from the wiki.
Story behind the Tanabata
Orihime (Weaving Princess?) the daughter of the Tenkou (Sky King, or the universe itself?) wove beautiful clothes by the bank of the River of Heaven (Amanogawa?). Her father loved the cloth that she wove and so she worked very hard everyday to weave it. However, she was sad that because of her hard work she could never meet and fall in love with anyone. Concerned about his daughter, Tenkou arranged for her to meet Hikoboshi (彦星, Cow Herder Star?) sometimes called Kengyuu (牽牛, Chinese name of Hikoboshi?) who lived and worked on the other side of the Amanogawa. When the two met, they fell instantly in love with each other and were shortly married. However, once married, Orihime no longer would weave cloth for Tenkou and Hikoboshi allowed his cows to stray all over Heaven. In anger, Tenkou separated the two lovers across the Amanogawa River and forbade them to meet. Orihime became despondent at the loss of her husband and asked her father to let them meet again. Tenkou was moved by his daughter’s tears and allowed the two to meet on the 7th day of the 7th month if Orihime worked hard and finished her weaving. The first time they tried to meet; however, they found that they could not cross the river because there was no bridge. Orihime cried so much that a flock of magpies (鵲, カササギ, Kasasagi?) came and promised to make a bridge with their wings so that she could cross the river. If it rains, the magpies cannot come and the two lovers must wait till next year.

The following variation of the story is known in China and Japan: A young farmer named Mikeran (牛郎, Mikeran?) discovered on his farm a robe which, unbeknown to him, belonged to a goddess named Tanabata. Soon after, Tanabata visited Mikeran and asked if he had found it. He lied and told the goddess that he hadn't but would help with her search. Eventually the pair fell in love, were wed and had many children. However, one day Tanabata noticed a piece of cloth which had once belonged to her robe on the roof of Mikeran's hut. His lie uncovered, Tanabata agreed to forgive him on the condition he weaved one thousand pairs of straw shoes, but until that time, she would leave him. Mikeran was unable to weave the shoes in his lifetime and thus never met Tanabata again. However, it is said the pair meet once a year when the moons/stars Altair and Vega intersect.

Usually the festival is held around July 7th.

So...we're being forced to use the community portal to get some special items.

God damnit, SE's just too damn good.

Doubt there's any items, wasn't anything in the .dats, prolly something like a nation teleport thing, teleport to Bastok from Windurst or vice versa.

Edit: Or may there are furnishings... didn't notice the bamboo items

So, no items but just a special event...

Well so far I wrote two haiku poems for two of my different Linkshells, but now I wish I wrote the assault one for my assault LS instead of in my old social LS that's still around. I might write a few more for different LS's that don't have any in them yet.

Mulan was not a princess and of course the traditional image of Hua Mulan was not the image created by Disney (Boyish, unschooled in the 'female ways' such as weaving, music etc)

Anyway, as Raesylil has already posted, the Celestial Nights event is based on the Weaving Girl and Cowherd Boy legend.

Elsewhere, apart from Japan, this festival is on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month and it is *supposed* to be observed that the milky way separating the 2 stars Vega (weaving girl) and Altair (Cowherd Boy) becomes dimmer (formation of the magpie bridge) thus allowing the 2 of them to be reunited.

dig out them poem skills lets get this event rolling

Just curious... is the 'meh' part of the haiku? or just something you put in this post.
Apart from the haiku. It looks like a runon...? Hold on...
