Assuming you purchase 10 marbles with different numbers, you have just about a 1 in 10000 chance (closer to 1 in 10000.45 or so, but that's hardly a significant difference at that point) of winning 100 million gil (or other such rare/ex shiny) for your 10000 gil investment.
So basically, assuming 10000 people enter and spend 10000 gil each (meaning 100 million gil gets spent), an average of one person will win the grand prize. Obviously, this won't be exactly one person, and the same person can purchase the same number more than once, and so on, so it won't be a uniform distribution or anything. But that's the overall expected odds.
In other words, it's break-even odds. Which is better than you'll see in an RL lottery, but still so low that it'd be totally unreasonable to *expect* to win, and kind of a pipe dream to even *hope* to win.
Just for a dose of unwanted realism. You may now resume your previously scheduled fantasies of what you would choose.
EDIT: Note that these calculations are only for the grand prize. The existence of consolation prizes means that the overall result will be more gil coming into the game than leaving it.
