2 choices.

1) Learning from Teachers and lecturers
2) The Internet.

I ask this because my useless uni lecturer seems to think that The Internet is the be all and end all of learning rather than actually showing students how to do stuff! ><

This will be left up for a month. Discuss please.

Fuck your teacher. Then post a video of it on the Internet.

Let's see what he thinks then.

I'm gonna complain about him to his boss tomorrow, I'm gonna request that I move into a more reliable group which actually has a REAL teacher.

As delivery systems go, I'm not so inclined to side with the Internet over teachers. The Internet is wonderful because it gives you lots of information about what you want to know. The Internet fucking sucks because it doesn't give you lots of information about what you need to know.

It sounds like your teacher is just too fucking lazy to try to be a filter for the mind-numbing amount of information out there.

He is unfortunately... were supposed to build a level in HL2 without using any weapons thats based on the town center the university is near, however, instead of teaching us he rubs his ego by saying something like:

"Oh I worked in the industry, listen to me because I worked on f*cking Pop Idol for PS2. Now that your listening to me, go use the internet bitches! lalalalalala"

And thats not the worst of it as the level editor was broken by the developers.... again!

God damnit I hate Games Engines and Physics....

every experience in your life is a learning experience...

every experience in your life is a learning experience...

Oh well in that case, never trust a moron who worked on the Pop Idol game...

Back on subject, what I mean is what is learning when trying to fit yourself into a specific career like Games Design, Film, Music, Accounting, etc. What would be the best way to learn on how to do some of the stuff in practice?

As a university librarian, I deal with students who like to think that Google is an acceptable means of research, but they fail to realize that they can't rely on just anything dredged up on the 'net unless the source contains properly documented research, stands the test of peer review, and/or the author is a recognized expert in the field. Most things on the net are not. There are very good educational tools such as research databases, but they are just that: tools. Your teacher is absolutely lazy. Nothing can replace an experienced human being passing his/her knowledge to students.

if you have the dicipline for online education then by all means go for it, i dk that alot of schools would offer an online only degree for those majors but i find its good to learn from professors who actually had experience in the field that they teach, most professors will provide a small biography of their crudentials on the syllibus, most professors have had other jobs in the specific courses they teach tho

ps. e-learning can be tricky because you do not know which information is credible and which isnt

Well, you could just respond that you would like a teacher that had experience in making games that people will actually play, and not games that most people will steer clear of since they know it will be total shit. What, he couldnt land that job making an Olsen Twins game?

I'm with Tok, sure you can get a ton of info from the internet, but how is someone going to know the info they get is going to be credible? Who wants to waste all their time searching to make sure that one piece of information they get is reliable?

I had a professor like this in my last college. she would sit up there and just give us things to look things up without actually teaching us anything... So i would exp on my RDM while in that class. >_>;;

I choose option 3) Experience and reasoning :P

internet is too full of shit these days and teachers, well.. seems many are refusing to believe if what they teach is wrong XD or ya.. *shrugs* at least that's been my experience.

thank you for agreeing with me =P

Where is the 3rd option, a 70 year old whore?

I voted the internet because it sure as shit aint school.

...And Gerry's stupid one-sided biased polls deserve spiting.

Ok, let me shed further light on this.

When I started I had no idea how to use Source SDK to make levels in Half Life 2. I was assured that the course was for beginners and encourages people who have never used the engine before.

What my group got... an idiot who worked on the pop idol game (which totally sucks ass) who doesn't know how to teach the basics OR advanced techniques in the subject and tells everyone to use the internet (which is ALWAYS changing) to learn the basics. Sure the internet holds vasts amounts of information, but I find it more useful for research rather than actually learning.

Hell I hate to admit it but even High school was better for learning rather than this jackass, brainless oaf of a lecturer I got stuck with -_-;

The other lecturers at uni gave clear, simple lectures. Motion Capture was very clear as it shown how to setup the motion capture suit slowly and easily. Intro to 3D applications was great as it started off AT THE BASICS. Games Documentation was taught well as we were shown how we could write our documents when studying certain video games and included blob diagrams to show how to separate the sections. Games Engines and Physics on the other hand... that was broken from the very beginning, anyways next semester I'm changing tutors anyway because I am never trusting the guy who made the pop idol game ever again.

In your situation I can see why you're pissed off, the guy sounds stupid. I'm just here to say that there's no one best source to learn from. I've heard teachers say some really stupid shit before, and some are really knowledgable about the field they teach. Some intetnet articles are completely bogus and retarded, yet some things on the internet are more reliable and credible than some teachers.
If your teacher is telling you to go google what you're supposed to be learning, then that's really really wrong. But if he's giving you specific sites to visit then I don't see the problem. If he knows what you're reading and agrees with it then it's basically just a different form of teaching - you're reading the meterial instead of being told the material.
