After a year, I had started playing ffxi again. However, I don't know which job-race to make. I've had my mind set on Elf Monk until 18, than I'll get warrior as subjub and get pally/warrior or something around those lines at 30. Does that sound reasonable, suggestions? I like elves.

If you like Elvaan, MNK makes the best use of their natural stats. Thier high STR MND and VIT will all used well if put towards the MNK proffesion, but PLD is a job that all races play well, there is just a different emphasis on aspects of the job. A taru ends up holding hate with their MP pool over all else, where are the Elvaan would be more likely to go the damage negation and damage dealt route for holding hate. Try them both out. Alot of people have been rediscovering the joy that is WAR too. What was once more of a Sub for other jobs is more frequently a main. Much more so than it was 2 years ago. You have alot of avenues open, go ahead and explore.

Along the same lines, it will be interesting to see how ToAU will affect the job choices of new players, both in terms of which jobs will be most wanted (RDM right now?) and which jobs will be most enjoyable to true new players to FFXI.

Overall, Hume make the easiest equipped PLD out there because of kick ass RSE. Galka on the other hand, also make it very easy to equip PLD because we already have the HP and VIT so you only have to compensate MP and AGI. Elvaan are nice and if you like them, go for it. Galka/Elvaan are going to be the best in endgame where HP and VIT, and damage dealing (for exp) matter far more than MP.
Do what you love, and as Savara said, MNK to 18 is great way to get your subjob fast, you can solo while lfp and MNK don't require much starting cash. WAR/MNK is great way to level shield in prep for PLD to 37, and are actually the best tanks until that level. PLD to 60 can be pretty fast, 60-70 isn't that hard but 70-75 we really get passed up for NIN a lot. Hopefully the new updates to the job will change that but at the time being, just worry about getting the job unlocked.
