Possible price drop within the next few months?

Until Sony actually says something, which to my knowledge they haven't, it won't be confirmed. I've heard from Sony representatives that a $100 drop will be coming.

Question is when?

I'd love to see Sony drop the price so that they can get much more considerable sales, but not until around June-ish just to screw with that idiot Michael Patcher and his April price drop "Prediction"...

Seriously, does he get paid for making predictions?!

Anyways, back on topic, GDC is just around the corner, so if anything, you could see the price drop rumours confirmed/denied there.

Well there's a lot of research involved in making predictions.
So he's less a predictor and more a researcher.

... Seriously?

Predicting things is not a "job" that should be paid for.

Ya he really does get paid to make predictions. In ways i would agree its silly... Some of these guys make some very logical predictions tho.

People working in stocks are "Predicting things" also tho Gerry.

Any price drop is always possible for any active console.

If we'll see one? Who knows. Probably it depends on how much PS3s cost to make now, which is information not known outside of Sony.

If they drop anytime soon or even announce it they'd be takin' back their word on that. Not that it would be a bad thing. The latest from Sony beat around a bush similar to this, "Our console is the best on the market for the price and we ain't havin' this lower the price BS."

It's weird to try and fairly price compare these newer consoles. The PS3 has a blu-ray player. The Xbox 360 charges for online, though provides a more feature rich online infrastructure. All these different skus have different hard drive spaces. When you try to determine what you're getting for what you're paying, it's kind of clouded. Maybe someone doesn't want to watch Blu-ray movies. Maybe someone would prefer a free, barebones online service. The value you get out of the system is dependent on what you will use it for and some PR dipshits can talk big from both camps.

They seriously need to drop the price. The PS3 is going through a slow death at this time. The sales were allready soso and then we hit a recession. PS3 has finished in third place so far this year even with Killzone 2s release... They NEED to drop the price.

EDIT: Had to go back and confirm the numbers... They are not good. Sony has not had a second place month for sales since August... And that was a a short 3 month run of outselling the 360 per month.

Is that for US only or worldwide, because from this weeks hardware sales list (in Japan), PS3 has beaten DSi and Wii thanks to Yakuza 3's release. Edit: Should note that this has been going on for about a month there with PS3 selling around 30k units weekly since WKC and Yakuza 3 arrived in Japan.

It's world wide, the Ps3's been way behind the Wii everywhere but Japan lately.

Ok then. Well it's assumed that developing the PS3 costs around $400 ish at this time, and seeing as newer models uses the 45nm Cell Processors, it's possible that Sony are turning a profit off this first before cutting the price of the PS3. It's about due that they make a Price of around $50-$100 sue to the parts used to make a PS3 possibly being cheaper now.

The last article about the cost to develop a PS3 that I saw put them still selling at a loss for the cheapest unit. They were at less of a loss, but still losing about $50 for the cheaper SKU. Where are you getting your number for the development cost?

Here's the last article I'd seen from december: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6202681.html?tag=result;title;2

It's just what I've heard from around the internet, no specific source. Guess I was wrong then.

ps3 production is still at a small loss. the sales numbers were world wide, so total sales. i believe in feb alone the wii was at 700k, 360 at 450k and ps3 around 280k... now that was off memory so dont quote it. add to it tho the ps3 was trampled by competition over the holidays... price drop is needed for sure.

its to the point were games alone can not save the ps3s sales.. to think a yakuza game will do anything is a joke. ps3 has some good game selection now and there is still no sales trend increase... the price drop would help alot i think...

it gets funnier. i asked a while back in the kz2 thread.. what will kz2 do for ps3 sales considering this game has the most pressure to drive ps3 sales.. well just take a look at the year to year. ps3 sales are down 2-3 percent compared to last year in Feb.. a time when ps3 game selection was poor.
