This guy says he has a private FFXI server running and you can choose your lvl/character and he'll give you a free account.

He even gives some working links to download the client.

I don't know if this is real or not yet, so if this is a scam/dangerous activity that you don't trust, don't do it.

Right now I can just say wow, I've already submitted for a account with a 75rdm and 75war with maxed subs on both.

I'll get back to you once I download the client and/or get a response from him.

If you try this, use different character names and passwords from your regular ffxi account.

if you have to download a program to make this work, I personally wouldn't trust it. If you insist on trying, make sure you don't have your ffxi password saved on PoL's autologin thingy, and after that if you run any program from that guy, and it doesn't work(to the point where you're actually -in- his server playing), assume your computer has been compromised, you'd be wise to just format your computer.

Tymon make sure POL dont find out about you registering on this private server. Trust me, game companies dont like losing people to illegal private servers

I have decided not to do this.

It looks too much like a scam to me really, I had sent him a email already but I didn't give him the same passwords or anything of my regular account.

I also uninstalled FFXI for PC recently so there's no real way he can access my computer.

Unless you trust your anti-virus, I wouldn't do this.

This looks like a huge scam

I applied for a job anyway, just curious

if anyone sends their char name and pw to this person, they deserve to lose their acct to a "wanna be hacker"

Huge scam. A friend contacted POL and the representative said these sites are trying to get access to your personal information whether it be POL account or other personal info saved on the computer. Also, from my understanding, it is almost impossible to run a private server like this without a huge backing. The servers dedicated to running this game are massive and very expensive, so I highly doubt a single individual or company would try such an undertaking.

If this works out omg...I wouldn't call BS yet as it's very possible it could happen...See Asherons Call. Also, of course SE wouldn't say nice things about this as they loose money so don't expect to get their approval but it is not illegal to do this. After a game has been out and analyzed for a few years this kind of thing is a typical occurance. Tell me if it works out please. Would be nice to enjoy this game again without having to deal with the trash it houses. :o

Reverse Engineering became illegal when they passed the DMCA. As well they are disturbing illegal copies of the game. Also all graphics, content, look and feel are the copyright of SE as well. Scam or no scam, what they are doing is illegal.

Will SE choose to enforce there IPs is a different story.

Its actually a quite common practice in other mmos. Just off the top my head linage 2, WoW, and Asheron's all have private servers floating around. Of course those will require you to download something to redirect your program to their private server at the very least, so that isn't proof of scam alone. However, you must beware hidden key loggers.

Was just scanning their forums and came across this thread. Apparently he is requiring credit card numbers from those applying to be a gm. That is just screaming scam. He also seems to be trying to get clicks for a free ipod or something. No one with a website that bad either would be able to pull off a ffxi server emulation.

You don't have to download anything extra to get onto the WoW servers...you just have to edit the .wtf file. >_>

My thoughts on why this ins't real:

The website's url is ffserver.com.sapo.pt, if you go to sapo.pt, you can see the website's domain is a web portal. Since I can't read it, I'll assume somewhere there, they host websites like geocities does or something. If you view the website's source you can see it was made using "Web Page Maker", and the message board is invisonfree (which itself wouldn't be bad, since I think they have a downloadable version you can host for yourself).

Why does this matter? Because to host your own ffxi server you need... a server, if you have a server (probably multiple, I know for a fact that /sea, login, deliverybox, and AH aren't handled by the same servers that control zones) dedicated to ffxi, then chances are you have normal web servers lying around, and you have a good connection to host your own website. So you wouldn't need to use these free services, and you could host your own message board on the same site. The actual website looks like it was made in 10 minutes (and "web page maker" would be a good way to make a website quick) and very little information and news is given.

Also I'm really not sure how this normally works for other mmorpgs, but I'd assume anyone developing a private server would not keep it under wraps 100% until it was nearly out, they'd release screenshots news, update, test results and etc.

thats the contact email adress?!

If a yahoo box for a contact isn't a red flag for this being a scam, i don't know what is.

Wow... I would KILL to have a personal FF server that I could host for friends and get like 50-60 guys on it and be able to do all the crap I never could d because of variuse reasons. IE huge crowds and competition.

One of my friends, Garvin, hosted his own Ragnorock online server for awhile, but he was having some issues so he dropped it. That being said it IS doable.

Still it screams scam to me. Be very very careful, if possibale do this on a completely diffrent PC then your original FF one.
