Power Company Turns Off Power on Woman's Breathing Machine

Ok i probably have a bad view on people since i work in CS... but you hear sob stories all the time and heres the key.... 99% of the time the people are full of shit and just trying to get something they dont deserve. I have no remorse for the woman ... if my life depended on it i woulda had a generator or.. idk payed my bill when they threatened to turn it off.

Just a sign of the fucking pussy whipped condition our country is in. Bitch deserved to die imo.

Edit.. read it a little better realized it was not our country but point still stands just change country from above statements to world. Also unless i saw documentation stating that she needed it to live i would completely disregard it. And even with said documentation the account would still need to be settled in some way

Something's not right about this story.

I just got my ComEd bill (bastards), and the top line on the back states "We will not shut off your power if someone in your house is seriously ill." I know this story was in New Zealand or wherever, but I would imagine that this is pretty standard practice among power companies.

Her brother murdered her, and used the power outage to shift blame and make himself look innocent. Someone call Monk.

Just curiouis but what happened in the 2 hours between when the power was cut off and she died? Did anyone call 911 I'm sure the guy would have waited while they got her to a hospital. Did they just let her sit there for 2 hours and die? No idea what happened just curious.

This supports my murder theory.

Maybe she didn't pay her power bill because she couldn't afford to pay her power bill and there was nothing she could do to get out of the situation without being able to work.
I can't speak for the company, but any respectable firm today delivering any kind of service is usually more than happy to accomodate special scenarios like this. She's disabled and low income, no problem as long as they know. It makes the company look like it really truly cares. Why wouldn't they want to accomodate people like this?

Caretakers either didn't know the power bill was overdue - which seems unlikely - or they just didn't tell the damn companies responsible. Maybe they have a legit reason for not notifying the power company. Either way, the responsibility was on their hands. If the power company listened to every cry of despair from customers saying their family will die if there's no power, they'd lose massive revenue. This is just the way the world turns.

Exactly. I'm sure you've seen far worse CS scenarios than I, but I'll happily attest that people today will sink to some pretty deep lows just to save themselves a couple bucks. Claiming "but she'll die if you disconnect it!" indubitably pales in comparison to some of the stories people have heard.

I was under the impression that the caretakers didn't even live at the household, but that doesn't really sound right.

agreed... or maybe she never realized that there was no power in the house (there's subtle signs to look for so you can tell when it happens... like the thing that makes you breathe properly stopping) in that time she couldn't access a phone, talk to a neighbour. just plug into someone's wall socket? I'm not sure on what her condition allowed her in terms of mobility but if someone can't move enough to get help... probably shouldn't be left alone in the house?...

IMO there was a lot of stupidity on the family end and in all honesty, i don't find the power company to be at fault. in regards to the technician being asked inside.. there's more likely than not policy against that. the decision probably wasn't his either way. you probably wouldn't even be surprised what people will do to not pay bills themselves.

Also, i really doubt that the breathing device was the tipping point on the electrical bill. even if such a cost were deducted and subsidized she'd probably still owe clear $110.there's no feesible way for them to limit the electricity consumption to just the device, so it's let them keep electricity that they aren't paying for or shut them off. they must hear all sorts of sob stories whether they be true or, more likely, false. company probably has a policy on this situation.

in the army we have lots of little sayings. most involve beer. We'd probably say something along the lines...
"Shit happens, people die. Soldier on"

I work in CS too, and yes the majority of people do lie to take advantage of the company but in reality, the companies are also taking advantage of the people are they not? They are providing a service, while generating additional profits. Its the way the world works. . . GREED.

There is something though, called morals. If the guy who turned off the power did in fact see that she was on a breathing machine, he could of contacted someone of higher authority to report this and ask for further instructions on what to do. I know if I was in that guys position, there's no way in hell i'd be cutting the power. If I have reason to believe that the woman could of died if I turned off the power, i'd feel that's something I need to bring to the attention of my supervisor.

For those that are saying "well its her fault she didn't pay the bill" I really hope one day you're faced with a situation that is beyond your control and you don't have the family or any other type of support to help you pay your bills. Its ridiculous that we spend our whole lives just trying to make enough money to get by, have bread on the table and a roof over our heads... and then in old age, if we didn't have a job that paid better than minimum wage, we're pretty much screwed unless we have "family" to take care of us.

Whatever the reason was for not paying the bill, the power still should not have been cut. I'm pretty sure I remember hearing laws that prevent power companies from doing this, as well as cutting the power off in the winter if a family has kids.

I still do think there are details missing from the story as well, like as to what happened from the time the power was turned off from the time the woman died... but still there just seems to be a lack of compassion all around which is typical in our world today. Unless its happening to you, most people don't care.

Wow nice. Did you miss the part where she fell ill and lost her job? Have you ever been sick enough that you couldn't work? Not everyone has a family or support system to fall back on if they get too sick to work. Be thankful that you do. Maybe she was sick enough it was difficult or impossible for her to manage even attempting to settle the bill?

I'm no bleeding heart but your post was pretty sickening. There's a difference between people that choose not to pay their bills and those that (like this woman) are simply too sick to work. Maybe it was difficult for her to even do the most normal of daily tasks (shower, go to the bathroom, eat), if she was sick enough that she died being off of oxygen for a couple of hours she probably had difficulty with those tasks. Can you imagine not being able to go to the bathroom by yourself and somehow finding the energy and motivation to deal with a customer service asshole like yourself that assumes you're lying from the start?

Question: with what has happened and the power cutting off, is that legal murder, since the family couldn't afford to pay the bills or didnt get a generator(the smart thing)?

Either way you look at it from the company's perspective or the family's its kinda disgusting.

The company has to cut the power off for those who dont pay regardless of what dependency and the family couldn't afford a generator or pay the bills to save someone's life? Effort does make a difference, I'm kinda curious if the family really went the extra mile for this person and if the company really gives a shit(which i guess is kinda trivial).

But the question is, is that legal murder?

I guess that depends on New Zealand law. If it were considered a crime here it would probably be something along the lines of manslaughter rather than murder.

if this were true this would be a case of accidental death and not the family saying that the electric company was at fault. In the article it states that the son and the mother told ... not showed the tech that she was dependent on the electric to live. (mistake 1 i see) Company claimed they were unaware of the situation which i completely believe because i get told crap (which goes in one ear and out the other) all day long about personally ruining peoples lively hoods by not replacing their phones when they decided to take the phone swimming. Also if the person was that sick that they were physically unable to pay their bill then they shoulda been under some supervision. (mistake 2) and finally let me rephrase my Bitch deserved to die statement...

If the bitch is dumb enough to sit at home and depend on the power company to provide power to her house to keep her alive when shit happens everyday to knock out the power and she had no back up system... then the bitch deserved to die imo..

Lemme check... yep still no sympathy... just natural selection i guess. Viva Darwin

It would be involuntary manslaughter but the family won't go after the tech himself, they'll be instructed by thier lawyer to go for the deeper pockets. In otherwords, the electric company. I feel bad for the family, god knows I've been sick and without job before, and it sucks. But as many have pointed out there are many unanswered questions. What of the family that is all of a sudden coming forth to attack the company? If it was all over a 122 dollar bill, why couldn't they offer her a small loan? Let's answer this by her family being in bad situations too which is understandable. Her children range from 5-20. Doing math lets say one is 20 and the next is somewhere between 19-16. Why didn't they get a job to help thier mom out?

It is a grave situation, but I think many courses of action could of been taken to avoid what happened. Unfortunatly, we usually don't know how to handle such a situation until its too late..

You don't seem like a very smart/educated person yourself so hopefully natural selection will take care of that. :) Although I guess calling a sick person that died and left four children motherless a "Bitch" constantly could be perceived as educated?

Did you ever think that maybe she didn't realize that she would die if she didn't have oxygen for a couple of hours?

Btw, your extensive experience working in an lolcallcenter doesn't exactly make you an expert in customer service or company policy.

if she didnt realize that then how could the electric company have ever realized that

then the bitch deserved to die imo..

No one has the right to dictate if a person is "deserving" of death.

The world would be a better place without people like yourself.

most likely i wont dispute that... but im not the only one that thinks this way... only i dont give a rats ass what other people think about me

It would be criminal negligence most likely, either on the part of the fam or the part of the company. I think anyone would agree that the power should not have been shut off when it was, even the company. You could tell from the article that the company was absolutely mortified. But there are still some things that don't make sense about the article. I still don't even agree that the story has its facts straight. If I dispute anything, at the top of the list would be the "fact" that she was basically on life support at home. That doesn't even make any sense to be living alone on life support plugged into a commercial outlet.

I don't really care about whether or not the electric company is responsible and I haven't post much about that. I take issue with your attitude about the fact a sick woman died in what is most likely a horrible misunderstanding/accident, leaving behind four kids, and you say shit like "the bitch deserved to die".

The fact that you don't give a rats ass about what people think about you is obvious. That's a good thing since with your attitude I can't imagine people would think much of you.

If you're not the only one who thinks that way please direct me to another post where someone says that the "Bitch deserved to die".

Would she really be living alone with four children? And for that matter, when the electrical tech came to the house to shut it off "the woman AND HER SON" invited him inside to see the machine. The son was home. I'm assuming the oldest. So... Did he just do nothing as his mom couldn't breath?
