Proof cops DO have quotas

that's not proof they need to reach a monthly quota. It could be a number of things, perhaps the top cop each month get a bonus, or perhaps he wanted to impress his bosses and get a salary promotion or extra vacation days.

I mean, let's say if they solve 100 crimes they get an increased salary. Sure, that's a kind of quota, but that doesn't mean they have to solve 100 crimes to keep their job.

I do agree that its disgusting though. Here in Sweden, cops rather hand out tickets than solving real crime, as each ticket handed out counts as a solved crime. As such, its easy to boost statistics by handing out tickets. They don't have a quota system (and I know that for a fact, I friends with plenty of cops). Sadly, this also means most cops are incapable of handling other crimes. Hell, there's a famous murder from a few years back, where a separate party drew up a list of 10 people in the neighboring area fitting certain criteria that could be the perpetrator. The cops completely ignored this list and took several months solving the murder, as opposed to just taking those 10 people in for questioning. Well, to their surprise, in the end it showed that the murderer were on this top-10 suspect list said party had put together. And they had put it together within 24 hours of the murder.

They also don't bother solving frauds or faked identities, as that requires more resources than handing out tickets do, and as such "isn't worth it" according to the higher-ups. The company I work for have handed out pretty much all of the information they need to catch the perpetrator (including name, address and facebook page), and yet, they don't bother with it.

But see, that would still mean there is some sort of "incentive" to them writing out more tickets. If said incentive didnt exist, then I doubt this cop would have done what he did no?

An incentive isn't a quota.

There doesn't even have to be an incentive, he might have just been getting yelled at for hardly ever writing up tickets so he forged a bunch to get his boss off his back. Not a quota or incentive, just a "you're doing poorly in this area of your job, so work on it."

I didnt say that incentive = quota, I'm saying if there is an incentive that promotes officers to write more tickets, and if a quota isn't met that incentive isn't awarded, then why would have this officer felt the need to write so many phony tickets?

Bajaratt: I see what you're saying, but I mean, can a police officer really help it if he/she is assigned to an area where people are just truly safe drivers and tickets are a rare occurence? I dunno, maybe that's why the guy felt the need to do what he did. Still feels shady.

You implied an incentive was a quota when you named this topic "Proof cops DO have quotas".

Actually, it sounds like he was just using it as a method of suck-up.

"In an effort to increase his numbers to his bosses" sounds like a suck up to me too. Just because something gets tracked doesn't mean there is any sort of an incentive of quota.

Guaranteed there are incentives, and why shouldn't there be? I am a strong believer than officers work off quotas, I've known a few who said they had them. That's here, but I can't see it being extremely different everywhere else.

And just to throw this out there, why else would the numbers jump significantly within the last 3-4 days of each month? It's a bit peculiar otherwise.

I don't think that is hard evidence though ;p

I agree about that. Sounds like he was kissing up to his bosses.

It does seem in some areas that there may be some incentive or quota to writing enough tickets. In my area, there's a law that everyone is supposed to be wearing a seatbelt. You are only supposed to get ticketed for it if a cop pulls you over for something else.

However in my area, near the end of the month/at certain times of year, it seems some cops get pullover happy for people who don't wear their seat belts. Getting their arrest record up? I think so. It happened to my mom once, and she's been paranoid about seatbelts ever since -- we can't afford tickets.

I don't think that's proof that cops in my hometown have a quota, but it's a pretty amazing coincidence.

I got pulled over the other night for drunk driving.
TWICE.

Best part: I HAD NOT BEEN DRINKING.
My 15 minute trip to Starbucks took an hour and a half.
Ugh... :|

No tickets, but still..
