ps2 disc read error

Kadin, I had this same probelm. I called up Sony and the only way to fix it is to send it in to them and get it repaired. It was more of a probelm on the very first hardware that came out (I got mine first day they came out). It is a software problem and there is nothing that can be done other than send it in to Sony. I'm sorry...

yeah, mine started doing that after about 5 years of hard use. Stoped reading DVDs, then trouble with PS2 discs. Still playes PSX discs tho, so i'm happy. I'm not gonna bother fixing it and just wait till PS3

See what you do is.. hit it with a blunt odject ^^ i do that to my computer all the time and it still works(well not anymore but thats beside the point)

Hi, maybe I can give some semi...or not so needed insight on this. First of all, why do you need a disc for FFXI...(wait don't answer that...dumb question).

2 - How much use and strain do you put on the system itself reading discs?

I know for a fact that reading a DVD Video (movie) pushes the lens and calibration of the optical surface a little stronger vice reading a DVD-ROM (game). Depending on what the system is reading will determine how much strain the lens laser is emitting.

I just recently bought a SCHP-10000/J (I think I missed a zero...lol) model Japanese PS2. I had the same problem, after I took the entire console apart and cleaned the area I know needed the cleaning. I lost the read disc error. Though it took the system a very long time to read anything. Then again I do know a good Japanese electronics repairman, so I had him re-calibrate my lens just in case. I think I spent a total of about 2,500 yen...about 22 bucks American. For everything, system, cleaning stuff, and lens re-cal.

It could be either one of 2 things.

A - Your lens is out of whack (i.e.; lens is out of focus and needs to be recal'd)

B - Your lens is dirty.

Hopefully, its the latter and not the former. Someone up the thread posted that Sony needs to be contacted to repair it. This is true, but if you are patient you can contact them and ask if there are any AUTHORIZED repair shops in your area. DVD media (DVD-ROM & DVD Video) seem the first to die out on the system, while the CD (PSX and music) seem to not be affected. This is probably due to the laser magnification not being as strong when it comes to reading the DVD media.

Forgive the long ass post, but maybe it can do some service to you or others on this board. Good luck with your console.

I havta answer that because some ppl are thinking "FFXI doesnt need a disk, duh!!!" Well what bout the next expansion pack?? How will she/he be able to upload the next one?

The PS system is all region. Hypothetically speaking. The problem I have and all other gamers out there is the region specific encryption on the games. If you are able to by pass this, you'd be able to play the game. The actual hardware of the system itself is identical to its European/Japanese counterpart, thus it will read the software you throw in the slot. The actually file on the disc are recognizable by the system itself, yet since they come out in certain REGIONS, you can't stick in a US game in a JPN system. This is the fact that the publisher encrypted the game to be RAN (USED/PLAY...whatever you want to label it as) on that specific region system. The HDD is nothing more than a HDD.

You ever try sticking a Memory Card into another PS2? It reads right? You don't need to worry about using say Freeloader, Swap Magic, or any of that stuff, because the Memory Card is NOT encrypted. I have gotten some Region 1 DVD's running on my JPN PS2, though not all of them work. Probably due to the dual-layer formatting or copyright protections.

I'll try tonight to get my US HDD (FFXI) to boot up in the JPN PS2. If I prove to be successful, I'll post some stuff in the boards. I know it can be done, because I can get region 1 DVDs working on a JPN system - knowing that JPN is a region 2 laser reading country. Also, the system itself READS my HDD and CONFIRMS FFXI being installed. I've yet to log in to see if it runs...

Again, my real problem is this:

Since FFXI Treasures of Assbaggin' (I don't know the name...sorry.) is region encoded to be played on a JPN, and since the expansion is technically readable on all PS2 systems across the board. I need to bypass the encryption files, to allow the installation.

I do know of a guy who lives not too far from me and he is Japanese and he installed a US copy of CoP on his HDD. I don't know what method or how he did it, but he can go to Promyvion and such. So, he is my proof. If you'd like I can keep you posted.

Sometimes you can fix the disc read errors by turning the PS2 upside down and resetting it. After the game loads the logo flashes so that you know its not starting up in that PS2 startup area where you can check your memory card and drivers etc you can turn it back rightside up.

Might not work though. I have told people about it and it hasn't worked for them before, but it works everytime for me.

Jimm BHE is right. Turning the system on its side can help. Though 1 thing I forgot to mention is the Dignosis? Ever wonder whats it for. It's a basically a manually activated overide for the laser magnification. Turn the system on with nothing inserted. Hit the /_\ button...and press /_\ on one of the selections, forgot the name of the actual menu item. Diagnosis should pop up on of them and turn it ON. Insert game and see whats up. Unfortunately, the system won't save this setting, so you may have to start any software like this everytime the media (game/DVD/CD) is removed and replaced. Try out www.gamefaqs.com and look up the PS2 Hardware FAQ's. I'm sure some of those guys spent DAYS on learning everything on disc read error, if not, I'm sure its been summed up into a nifty decrepid .txt file.

OMG i love you.. I found that site posted above where you adjust the lens level.. tried it and got the silver disc to work but the blue disk won't.. I was about to give up when I read this quote and was like "what the hell, i'll try it." It worked.. thnx bro..

oh and the reason I need it to read disc is cause I'm installing HDD on my ps2.. Gonna play ffxi on it every now and then..

lol i have 2 ps2 and both of them have this problem.

Just some info guys:
I just got a letter in the mail the other day and for anyone that had this disc read error problem fixed before April 2004 are eligible for $100 dollars! The state of California filed a class action law suit against Sony and won. So if you had yours fixed you should get a letter in the mail that will tell you how to recieve your money. Even if you are not from the state of California you are eligible so long as you sent your PS2 in to be fixed for this problem. Hah, funny the timing. I JUST got this letter in the mail yesterday!
