My friends PS2 Harddrive died on him the other day. I was told that there is actually a way to rig an external harddrive to work w/the ps2. I looked around on google but couldn't find anything. Anyone know of a site w/info on this?

Since it's basically just a normal IDE Hard Drive that computers use, a lot of them work with the PS2 with a little extra effort(If they don't fit inside.)

Compilation of HDD compatibility with the PS2.

While you can use just about any drive inside a PS2 for modding/pirating purposes, I think you NEED to use the one bundled with FFXI to play it. I remember reading some ask about that in another forum, I think the 40GB hard drive with FFXI has some files already on the HD you can't get off the disc, making any other drives useless for playing the game.

I can't confirm this though, has anyone else here played the PS2 version of FFXI and used another drive instead of the one bundled?

PuPuSa is right that was the whole point of people having to buy the HDD bundle inorder to play FFXI

I remember back in the "HD Advance" days I tried to load FFXI on my 200GB Maxtor but no go. Others were also having the same problem. They wanted FFXI and other games on thier HDDs because the PS2 HDD 40GB space was very limited.

You need da FirmwareZ!

I can see the part about having a little trouble installing ffxi to some other hard drive, but idk about the firmware. You always have an option to format the HDD, which I have done a couple times. Where would the firmware come from after that?

My ps2 took a shit on me last year, i thought all i had to do was get a new PS2 and pop in my HDD "wrong". I called sony IT and they told me i had to format my HDD with my HDD utility disk. After the disk formated the hardrive it also installed some files, so maybe those are the files the Hardrive needs to be compatible with the PS2?

Cant be, because then you would't be able to play XI off the PS3, and i can confirm that you can.

I'm betting it was all that sand, that can't be good for general consumer electronics. >.> On the plus side once Iraq is stablized electronics companies have record profits to look forward to selling 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th replacement units to customers they hook on their products. <.<

lolPS2utilitydisc.... firmware is software embedded onto hardware.

Let's also not forget Sony's innovative and weird proprietary format skillz!!!!11
