Hi, I just got a new ISP not long ago(Upgraded from Dial-Up to DSL).

Now whenever I try to log in to play, I get an error message. It says something along the lines of: "The network is busy or there are connection problems. Try again later and make sure your connected properly. Viewer update failed."

Heres how I tried to set it up.

1:I recieved a "modem" sent by the ISP. I move it to my room and connect it to my PS2. Ethernet to ethernet port, Phone line to phone jack with a filter, and everything.

2: I set it up as an Ethernet connection first, and it failed, so I tried it as a router(I don't know if the modem acts as a router or not).

3: I was told to turn off the firewall in the modem and try, that attempt also failed.

I was told I might need to do "Port forwarding", and was instructed to ask here. Please, if you can help at all I'd really appreciate it. thanks in advance.

I'm gonna be off and on, so I may not be able to respond right away.

+ Port numbers that may be used by the PlayOnline server group:
-TCP 25, 80, 110, 443 or 50000 - 65535
-UDP 50000 - 65535

if you know how to open ports, this is all the info that you need

if not, you can check the manufacturers website for specific instructions, as not all routers are the same

also, you could try cycling the power on your modem. It's a long-shot, but sometimes it does work.

EDIT: also, just found this, it may provide some help...

http://portforward.com/english/appl...tasy_XI_-_PS2/Final_Fantasy_XI_-_PS2index.htm

tells you step by step by selecting your modem/router in the list

Thank you very much, I'll try those and see. I'll likely try them tomorrow or the day after. i hope they work.

Any other suggestions would also be appreciated.

That site said I need to assign a static IP address. And that assigning one may cause problems when it comes to using the internet.

So, is it safe to assign a static one? Or would it cause more issues?

It's safe as long as no other device shares the same IP. If that happens, then you have problems.

Is there any way to find one that won't be assigned to another computer? Or would it just be pure luck if its free or not?

On your computer, go to the start menu and select run. When the run window comes up, type cmd into the text field and hit enter. This should open up a small, black window.

Type the following (substituting the IP address you want to check for the one I've listed below) and hit enter:
ping 192.168.69.101

If you get something back that says Reply from 192.168.69.101, then that IP address is in use. If it isn't in use, it will say Request timed out. If you're having internet connectivity issues, it may also say Request timed out. If you can browse the internet, that shouldn't be an issue though.

i had this same problem when i first moved and got new internet service. I tride to connect the "modem" strait to the ps2 and couldnt connect, but i could get on a laptop and surf the web.

What i found out was that the IP that they gave me was a private address and i couldnt play online games on it.

So what i found out was i just needed a "router" to connect the modem to fix the problem so its not just the private IP from the modem alone.

You might just need to do that and get a router to fix your problem unless your tried that alread.

I was thinking of getting a router, but I was unsure if it would help, or have a similar problem. Getting one would most likely fix it? Which ones are recamended? I don't have a lot of extra money at the moment, so a cheapish one would be preffered.

One final question about the IP thing. if I did happen to assign a static one, would it be possible to set it back to assigning a random unused one later(In case I accidentally set one thats used by another)?

Once again, thanks for all the help. it is greatly appreciated. ^^

Not to be captain obvious or anything but AFTER you plugged in the Ethernet cable for your ps2 into the modem did you unplug your DSL modem power cord wait 30 seconds and turn it back on so the ps2 would get recognized.

I ran into the same problem a long time ago and that fixed it for me.

Umm... I've tried so many things I don't remember if I did. I do think I tried that. But since i'm certain, I will try it next time. I don't know the next time I'll try again, but it'll most likely be within a day or two, I'll keep updated on any progress.

Um, port forwarding isn't necessary these days.

Plus DSL to the site has very poor support for homes that are older than 50~ years old, if your phone lines are that old, you might want to try another option...

Make sure you don't have a filter on your DSL line, that would be completely wrong, filters are only for your land line phones to filter out the upper bandwidth signals used to carry your DSL signal.

Make sure your DSL modem works for 1 device first, mainly a computer, after checking all those road blocks I listed above. If that works, then you may configure a router, or try other devices, but configuring a router for a static IP PPPoE is a little tricky since it requires 1-2 extra steps outside of plug and play. You have to save your login info to the routing device / gateway, call your DSL ISP for that info. If that info is saved into the modem, then UPnP will be fine.

If your DSL line is soley for your PS2 try to test it on a comp anyway, much easier to troubleshoot. And be sure your login info is saved to the modem, since without that information, your DSL shouldn't work (Verizon).

Hey, Princemercury! Your on my friend list, even though we never talked much.

I tried unplugging it for 30 seconds, it did nothing. I tried several times.

My DSL connection works perfectly on my computer. I just haven't been able to get my ps2 to work with it yet. Hopefully portforwarding isn't necessary. Also, our phone lines are only like 14 years old. We had them installed when we moved here then. And i think we even had to have them replaced completely about 7 years ago.

I think I'll try using the phone jack connected to my computer instead of the one in my room. If that doesn't work, I dunno what to do. lol

Heya ^^,

If you can get it working without problem on at least 1 jack, best thing to do is keep it on that jack and slap a router on it. I've seen several people who had problems with DSL working with one jack in the house and not another.

But try luggin your computer to the jack that isn't working and trying it anyway. If it works there, you can concentrate on the PS2 or just get a router, if it doesn't, then you'll know there's a glitch with your PS2, or that particular jack.

Hurray! I tried my PS2 on the same phone jack as my computer and it worked!

Finally I know the problem, and can play again. Thanks so much for all the advice!

Now a new question, my room is quite a distance from the working phone jack. would a router need to be connect this particular jack also? if so it'd be much easier to just move my PS2 instead of moving the modem everyday.

Buy a wireless bridge for the PS2 and a normal wireless router for your working jack.

Here's the layout in text...

(Room with working phone jack)
[Working Phone Jack] = [DSL Module] = [Router] = [Computer]

(Space between working phone jack and your room)
#wireless#signal#

(Your room)
[Gaming Wireless Bridge] = [PS2 Network port (LAN)]

So no, your router would sit where the jack is working next to your DSL module. And with the wireless bridge you don't have to move your PS2 anywhere since it bridges your PS2 LAN to a wireless transceiver. You can search for it at BestBuy or just eBay them.

Setting it up shouldn't be too too hard, I've seen some of the newer, more recent versions of instruction manuals that come with those home based routers and they're much more precise than they were years ago. If you need help just shoot me an email I can help you set it up from here via remote assistance.
