Is it just basic load and play, or do you need to jump through hoops to get it to run? And PS3 is free to use online correct?

Free to use Online. Only need to download and Install the "PS2 System Data" that allows PS2 games to use the PS3 HD (free download from the store)
After that, just install like you would onto the PS2, and it'll place an icon in the Games tab of the XMB to launch the game.

First you must download the latest update to the PS3 OS and there is a extra update you need to download that will allow you do install PS2 harddrive enabled games on the PS3. Once that is done you can install FFXI on the PS3 using your orginal PS2 install CD's. Hope this helps with your install I am sorry I am not infront of my PS3 right now or I could tell you the name of the program you need to download to install PS2 Harddrive games on the PS3 harddrive. But I can tell you its in the same download area were you would downlaod free demo games to the PS3 under the free section.
Good Luck on your install of FFXI on the PS3
