PS3 is dead! 20GB model that is..

While rumors were circulating that Sony may drop support, looks like 1up.com has confirmed that Sony will no longer be making the 20GB models....

"At launch, we offered two separate models of PLAYSTATION 3 to meet the diverse needs and interests of our PlayStation fan base. Initial retail demand in North America was upwards of ninety percent in favor of the 60GB sku, so we manufactured and shipped-in accordingly. Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20GB model here in North America," said SCEA senior director of corporate communications Dave Karraker.

"In addition to the larger internal hard drive, the 60GB PlayStation 3 features added storage media slots and built-in Wi-Fi not found in the 20GB system. Based on retailer and consumer feedback, we have decided to focus our current efforts on the more popular 60GB model," he concluded.

Interesting, I doubt anyone who was serious about the system went with the 20GB model anyway, so I wonder how retailers are going to get rid of their current inventory, perhaps sales in the upcoming months?

It is in black. The silver is only the promotion model.
Unless you mean the chrome trim.

Personaly, i dont know why you'd buy the 20GB model.

Maybe people bought the 20 gig model mainly as a blu-ray player since if you aren't interested in games you won't care about the extra space, the wireless internet and the different slots. Sony saw the 20 gig as ultimately unprofitable because people buying it for watching movies wouldn't make up for the loss they take on selling it so they decided to get rid of it?

I'd imagine the vast, vast majority of buyers were getting it to play games, and there was really no reason at all to buy the 20 gig version compared to the 60 gig.

Well that's not really true. Virtua Fighter 5 for example installs 2 gigs onto your harddrive. FF11 takes 10 gigs from your hard drive. Tekken 5 takes a little over half a gig. Hot shots golf demo(worth keeping cause it's awesome as hell) takes 250 mbs. Songs and movies can go onto a usb hard drive but if you don't want to get one, those will take up a lot of space. 10 gig partition for linux if you want it.

Plus there are more slots in the PS3 that 20 gig doesn't have. Memory stick duo, SD/MMC, compaqflash...

And the wireless internet... which if you want on a 360 costs 100 alone.

The 60 gig is definetly the better deal by far.

But the 20 gig was useful for comparative purposes to the 360 if you want to talk about features vs price.

The 20gb one never got released over here, I find it funny that 2 weeks after launch places are slashing the price by up to £100 because they aren't selling.

maybe people are comparing the 20gig to the 60gig just like XB360 and core/premium packages.

Ive heard some horrifying stories about the core system in comparison with the premium pack.
