ps3 or wii?!?

isn't a tax refund still basically your money coming back? XD

To be honest I'm more happy with my DS than my Wii. I'd definitely suggest goin' for either a PS3 or a 360 before a Wii.

Get the Wii now since you'll actually enjoy it now. From what you've said if you get the PS3 now it'll basically be a paperweight until FF13 comes out. lol.

I mean sure you'd probably find games you like for PS3 now but well

brawl is right around the corner

problem solved

To be honest, if you have a PS2 just get the PS3 40 giga model if you want to spring for a PS3. OMG OH NOES I HAVE TO PLUG IN ANOTHER SYSTEM. Now I understand that it does suck to have to do that since well my Xbox 360 doesn't play some old Xbox titles I love, so I do need to swap AV channels at times. Thats right, I actually have to hit the input button from Composite feed channel to Input 2. The worst is hitting the button again for my Wii to input 3.

But to answer your question, get the Wii for the games you want now. PS3 is an amazing machine but if its your intention to get it for just FF13 then get a Wii now and get the lesser model PS3 later if you don't care about backwards compatibility like me. God knows PS3 wont sell out even when the almighty FF13 comes out.

As for me, Lost Odyssey is keeping me occupied until Final Fantasy Rings of Fate comes out on March 11th =P. As some others said above, I find my DS to be more of money well spent than my Wii.

Wii get old quick. They also force in the controls to games.
They force it far less into games than the six-axis; especially since the Wii controls are the primary feature of the system. That's like saying they force HD graphics into games for the PS3.

The financial aspect is kind of irrelevant, because either way they'd have to buy both consoles; but the Wii is significantly less likely to have a price drop in the next year. Plus, buying the Wii now would mean $150 that she could save the rest for buying the PS3 later or just buy something else with it.

The issue is that the primary function of the system isn't good for all types of games, and in most games its downright terrible.

Its great for "Wii" games (Wii sports, trauma center, ect) but then you get ported games, or more traditional games, the controls hurt the game at the fundamental level. Brawl is a prime example. Most of the reviews who played it at the expo about 6 months back said how amazing the game was, and that it would be awesome, but that they killed themselves more than a few times by jumping off the map with the wrong wrist motion. The universal opinion was that the game would be 100% better using the GC controller.

Also, I can't think of a single game (Other than a couple PSNstore titles that are designed around the Sixaxis, like Rub-a-Dub) that forces Sixaxis controls other than Lair, and it flopped BECAUSE of that. Its also got a dual-analog patch coming up soon, and might suddenly be a pretty good game

This may cause a few heads to explode around the boards given some of my past posts, but I'd get the PS3. I like my Wii just fine and have no problems recommending it, but if you have a nice tax refund windfall burning a hole in your pocket, you may as well spring for the more expensive system now.

I'd say thats pretty flawed. In the end, you're still paying the same total. I'd actually recommend the opposite. Grab the Wii now, and the PS3 once the big selling point titles are actually out. Who knows, you might even see another price cut between now and then for the PS3.

And the six axis is actually useful for a much smaller number of games; so having the six axis controls in all of the games means they're forcing it even more.

Nintendo must have tightened up the controls then, because I remember some more recent articles that said the wiimote/nunchuck setup worked well. They also announced 6 months ago that you could just use the gamecube controller if you wanted, so the Wiimote isn't being forced into the game at all. I also remember the videos of ordinary people playing the game at one of the trade shows and they all seemed to be playing it without any problems at all.

So far, I've done sports games, action-adventure, fighting, party, FPS, point-and-click, light gun, and 2D games, as well as the slew of "Wii games." The only genre I can think of where the Wiimote controls would actually be forced in is a standard, turned-based RPG. Everything else I've played so far has had a good use for the Wiimote.

Playing through Ratchet and Clank I'm honestly annoyed to hell with the six axis. The tornado launcher is a complete piece of shit, the flight/free falling could be done with the analog sticks effortlessly, and the puzzle box where you have to link the circuit paths is irritating as hell. Admittedly, my library is pretty small, but they're doing a hell of a job forcing that square six axis block into the round hole of the games.

In the other games I've played, the six axis served no purpose that couldn't be accomplished by a button press; which is the exact same thing as what you're claiming the Wii does, so it is at the very least just as forced into the games as the Wii mote is.

Yep, the PS3 will probably have another price drop by next year, when FFXIII will be released.

If there's not a price drop, then there will probably be a new version or three to choose from.

So I got my tax refund and need something to spend it on. I need to decide between these two systems, so figured i'd post for advice.

PS3 - I want to play FFXIII, but so far thats the only game ive seen that is at all interesting to me. Beyond that though, I know the PS3 is a superior technical system, is more readily available and has a greater potential for great games...

but.

Wii has at least 5 games i'm already interested in, Metroid's, SSBM, Zeldas etc... and of course is cheaper... but practically impossible to find, has no final fantasy, and is the lesser system.

any advice?

Wii is for children, Mothers, Fathers, Grand parents. Everyone. Very ordinary.

PS3 is not for everyone. Unlike the Wii, it's unlikely to see a PS3 in an old folks home.

To help you decide, lets look at it this way. Everyone has different taste in Cars. The fewest type of cars we see on the road, are the ones that are the most fun to drive. No matter if you're a car freak or not, if you take a ride in a Lamborghini, you will always remember it. We also remember when we "first" take a spin in our new ordinary car. The best experience is personal experience. But if it's worth anything. Both of my brothers own a Wii. And all they really play on it is Guitar Hero.

Everyone i know that has a Wii is bored of it. Same goes for PS3. All systems have a ton of garbage.
However. 2008 is the year the PS3 will deliver all we ever asked of it. It's likely it'll start to bring new hype this coming E3 when new PS3 exclusives start to surface (the type of games that are only possible to do on the PS3 at this point in time.) The PS3 is the only system equipped to bring the stuff you've never seen in gaming before.

Due to the cost of the Cell Broadband, we won't see a Price drop in the PS3 for awhile. If you rely on you're tax return to purchase a PS3, you won't be playing FFXIII at home this year, if you blow it on the Wii plus the 5 games you want from it.

Aside from what i wrote, i think you should get a Wii. Cause if you want it for FFXIII, assuming that's all you want for PS3, it's likely you'll frown at the PS3 while waiting for it. You can have you're Wii and the 5 games now, then within this year you can work something out.

Believe in yourself and do what you need to do, and you'll have both systems and all you wanted for them by the end of the year. If you think that's possible then get the Wii now.

Anttaru I'll spare the usual disagreements since we've done this too much already but I do want to make one comment about your (well written) post -

Due to the cost of the Cell Broadband, we won't see a Price drop in the PS3 for awhile.

That's what people said about the PS3 from day one but PS3 has already undergone two price drops. I wouldn't count on its price being locked down even through 2008. The proof lies within history, good sir =)

Well Tagrineth, before the first price drop, Sony was taking huge losses for the production of the PS3. Lowering the price actually softened the blow in a sense, (more cash back in quicker time, but still a greater loss)

Until the PS3 is really on fire then they most likely will not lower it's price anytime soon. Lowering the price again now isn't a good business decision, why lower it again during this upcoming spike in sales.

To be honest. When I actually do play my Wii, with the exception of Trauma Center, I always think to myself I wished like hell they'd go ahead already and put out a normal controller and normal controller coding to the games. It really is old now and call me cazy/lazy but my wrist always feel like they did when I first watched Baywatch, I don't like that.

I don't know about this. On the one hand, you could be right. On the other, you have to think about it like this. Someone who doesn't care two craps about the FF series or a Blu-ray player -could- see gettin' the Xbox 360 and saving $100+ a better deal. Also, considering sales, more of their friends probably own a 360 than a PS3, that could also be another reason. So what I'm getting at is that another price drop, putting in nearly the same as a 360, could possibly break one of the two hypothetical scenarios creatin' a bigger market. Now, whether or not it would be a good business decision, sales vs. cost of production wise, I haven't the slightest idea.

I'll say again, it's only a hypothetical situation I made above tryin' to justify how people could possibly see another price cut coming so soon. I think another cut would be good for the system especially considerin' what it has to offer thus far.

I find the Wii to be very overrated personally. I own all the systems - including a Crysis level PC, except I don't own a DS. I barely play my PSP since I don't really enjoy portable gaming that much, but I still play it more than my Wii. When I do play my Wii, it's for Smash Bros Melee. It will likely change when smash bros brawl comes out, the real reason I bought the Wii. Bought Twlight princess, paper mario, trauma center, mario galaxy, and wii play. Got bored of the Wii sports fast, wii play sucks, Twilight Princess and Mario Galaxy I didn't play for too long before getting bored of the control scheme - and Trauma Center is a lot of fun but really really short.

That's been my basic experience with the system. The PS3 I use a huge amount and has a lot of great games. It's got a blu-ray player built in, which means even if you don't own an HDTV you can buy your DVDs on Blu-ray so that if you get one eventually your movies will be in high def. If you get the 60 gig model it's got a built in Super Audio CD player which makes for really good high quality audio. It's got a lot of really terrific multiplatforms that's on it, the 360 and PC as well, as well as a few worthy exclusives like Uncharted.

As for what's more "gimmicky" the 6 axis or the Wii mote...

Bajaratt is both right and wrong. Right in the sense that when implemented it's not as good as the Wii mote as it doesn't have a pointer and the controller is shaped badly to use for mention sensor. Wrong in the sense it's more of an impediment. Almost every game for the Wii forced motion sensors on you no matter how pointless. The only exception I can think of is Super Paper Mario. Besides that, most of the games would play tighter and with a lot less effort with a normal control scheme. If you ultimately prefer shaking the wii-mote left and right instead of playing A, then this is good. If you'd rather just press a button or tilt a stick, then this pretty much sours the experience. If you're a hardcore console gamer, and you have been playing with sticks and buttons for years and are very comfortable with that, then it may annoy you alot.

As for sixaxis controls...they are in some cases well implemented and others not.

In Resistance you shake your controller to put yourself out if you're on fire or to shake off tracer bullets. This to me is pretty cool since all the buttons are used up with Resistance with more important functions and this is something you'll do very rarely and it makes sense.

In Motorstorm there's an optional tilt steering wheel. It's done very tightly but is too sensitive and there's option to turn it down - so I don't use it, but it's optional so you can just pretend it isn't there if you prefer.

In Lair motion control basically ruined the game which would be ok otherwise. I hear a patch is coming out way too late, to give stick controls.

In Heavenly Sword you can use motion controls to direct arrows and other thrown objects. It was well implemented, everyone liked it, you could turn it off and use a stick as well I believe.

In Enchanted Arms you use the motion controls to do the little indiana jones, whip-jump over a cliff.. you can press a button too instead if you don't want to.

In Ratchet there's the Tornado gun. You are using your sticks for controlling your character and turning the camera - if you feel comfortable with it, you can tilt the controller to turn the Tornado. It requires you to be able to do a lot of things at once which takes a lot of focus and practice. You don't really need the gun, it's just a fun thing to play with and it is good at crowd control. You can also just shoot it forward and not tilt it. There's also a few mini games packed in with motion controls - which are just mini games and ultimately don't matter IMO.

In Folklore you pull up on the controller to tear a soul out of a folk. Most people like it. Like Resistance, it's six-axis implemented correctly.

Warhawk it's an optional flying mode that I don't use.

Most games don't use six-axis I believe. Cod4 doesn't, Uncharted doesn't. Assassin's Creed doesn't. Orange box doesn't, the pixeljunk games don't, gripshift doesn't, stardust doesn't. PAIN doesn't if I remember correctly. Tekken 5: DR doesn't. Virtua Fighter 3 doesn't.

I really don't see six-axis as a negative to be honest. I see it as more of a 'nothing'.

Its already published on PSM (most recent issue) that there will be another price drop, because blu-ray won the war. They are trying to market it as a blu-ray player with a free gaming system.
