ps3 or wii?!?

I think you may want to wait, apparently MGS4 is gonna be bundles with an 80gb PS3 and a DUALSHOCK 3 controller when released!

Can someone explain the Dualshock 3 debacle to me? I could've sworn something that's considered standard these days arriving late isn't a good thing.

"Rumble is a last gen tech. It has no place in our colossus of a system."

-Sony

Sony was in the middle of litigation with Immersion (company with rumble patents) so they left the rumble out. Once the case was settled they decided to make nice (ie try to make some profit, imagine that) and are bringing rumble back.

Its already published on PSM (most recent issue) that there will be another price drop, because blu-ray won the war. They are trying to market it as a blu-ray player with a free gaming system.

There's PSM and there's OPM.

PSM - Unofficial Magazine.

OPM - Official Playstation Magazine.

PSM is also UK based, and as we all know they do market the PS3 as a cheap Blu-Ray player in that part of the planet. Blu-Ray kicked HD-DVD's ass, which is even better for PS3 sales to date. Make no mistake though, the PS3 is a gaming machine above being Blu-Ray player. It just happens to be cheap for the sake of competition.

2008 Rumors of PS3 dropping to $299

PS3 Price Drop On The Way Again, $299!

January 22, 2008

Boston (dbTechno) - According to reports it seems that Sony is not very far away from dropping the price of the PS3 once again as many news sources are stating that it may not be very long before we see a $299 PS3 console.

The price drop which would bring the price of the PS3 down to $299 is expected to take place on January 28th, which would actually be just next Tuesday.

The news comes from postings at SlickDeals.net who specializes in posting latest price changes for hot electronic products.

They stated that a $299 price point for the PS3 is likely to take place on January 28th.

40 Gig PS3 at this point in time is still $399.00.

PC World Says

Sony Denies PS3 Price Drop Rumors of $299
Despite online reports suggesting otherwise, SCEA says a $299 PS3 is just wishful thinking.
GamePro Staff

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

Sony says a $299 PS3 is nothing more than wishful thinking.

"We have no plans for any pricing announcements on PS3," a Sony representative told GamePro in an email on Tuesday. "What you are hearing is purely rumor and speculation."

Rumors of a PS3 price drop to $299 surfaced on Monday in connection with the newly confirmed white PS3.

According to multiple (and some hokey) reports, the $299 PS3 news stems from "several posters at SlickDeals.net," something a website administrator later clarified to just one vague and dated reference on an unrelated thread.

Sony Chief: No PS3 Price Drop Before June 2008
PS3 ‘a lot more difficult to cost reduce’ than PS2
23 Jan 2007

Jack Tretton
Sony Computer Entertainment America bossman Jack Tretton has gone on record to clearly state that there will be no price-drop for PS3 until at least June 2008.

In an interview with Game Informer magazine, when asked if price drops for the PS3 would be "as soon or as drastic as they were for the PlayStation 2," Tretton answered with a clear, "No."

The PS2 originally launched in the US in October 2000 at a price point of $299. The first price reduction on that machine, when the price was slashed to $199, was made by Sony in May 2002. Hence, if Tretton is to be believed, the PS3 is going to continue to set you back $599 (or the planned £425 in the UK) until well into the summer of 2008.

Tretton claims that the massive investment in research, development and hardware means that the PS3 is far “more difficult to cost reduce" than was the case with the PS2.

My personal thoughts on the matter of another PS3 price drop happening anytime soon remains the same. Especially how the PS3 has been creeping up on the competition, and it's PS3's breakthrough year. PS3's will start to fly away from their dusty shelves and into a home near you.

The jump in sales for 2008 will not be a result of being a Blu-Ray player, it'll be due to the release of the great titles everyone has been waiting for that sold the system to begin with.

I'm guessing a decrease in the PS3's price will probably come about in 2009 or sometime in 2010. That of coarse all depends on the PS3's success, and if they find a cheaper way to produce them as they always do for electronics.

I don't know about this. On the one hand, you could be right. On the other, you have to think about it like this. Someone who doesn't care two craps about the FF series or a Blu-ray player -could- see gettin' the Xbox 360 and saving $100+ a better deal.

Friend of mine got a Halo edition XboX360 and it cost a little more than my 40 Gig PS3. It's similar to an X360 Elite, except it has a 20 gig HDD and comes with a plug and play charger for the controller. An additional controller ran him another $96 after taxes. Aside from a few new outlets the Halo edition X360 is not too different than the core package that goes for $199. For some the core package might turn out nice.

Strid said:
Also, considering sales, more of their friends probably own a 360 than a PS3, that could also be another reason. So what I'm getting at is that another price drop, putting in nearly the same as a 360, could possibly break one of the two hypothetical scenarios creatin' a bigger market. Now, whether or not it would be a good business decision, sales vs. cost of production wise, I haven't the slightest idea.

I'll say again, it's only a hypothetical situation I made above tryin' to justify how people could possibly see another price cut coming so soon. I think another cut would be good for the system especially considerin' what it has to offer thus far.

Another price cut soon would be good for awhile, but it could result in the last Playstation we'll ever see.

Like all consoles the company behind the system always takes a financial hit for each system produced. They make their money back then profit from game sales. Business for PS3 is getting better, but not good enough to go ahead and drop the price again.

Not enough games being sold + the system is not being sold for it's true price already. $399 for a PS3 is excellent considering what's under the hood.

man anttaru why has Sony not hired your ass yet? You consistently do better PR spinwork than anyone actually working for the company

To Tagrineth: If my dreams come true, Sony will do work for me :) But working for Sony might be fun for awhile. A friend of mine, his Mother works for Sony and she gets to have all these rare and limited gadgets. Back in the day she gave my Brother this really ultra slim Sony Cassette Walkman that would split in half it was so compact, and it's all computerized and shit with seek features and all kinds of crap, up to this day it's still off the chain and it's a damn cassette player !

To Strid: Wai. Not sure if it was the one that was compatible with PC and XboX360, I think it was the plug and play Battery charger that ran the price so high. This was back in October.

About the Sixxaxis not having Rumble, and Sony saying it has no place in their colossus machine. It was true at the time. It had no place, and the machine is possibly the greatest risk ever taken in all of electronics history. The PS3 could have killed Sony. Hell it still can.

Sony made a claim rumble disrupts the Blue tooth technology inside the controller. Which is probably a lie. It's better to say that to the harsh public than to say "it's to keep the price down for us and you". The PS3 is a red line product, and when dealing with such things a company needs to do what they can to make the sale. Nothing right or wrong about it. The system has no rumble and it's been mentioned, whatever Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo says is not to be taken personal.
Now the people will have their rumble, but it's not a big deal. Personally i like my PS3 controller to have a longer charge. If Sony was smart, they would add a long charge cable with the rumble Sixxaxis just like what Microsoft has for theirs.

The only reason it "had no place" was because they couldn't legally put it in since they lost that law suit. It wasn't a voluntary decision on Sony's part, and it definitely wasn't to keep the cost down, they were losing so much already the few bucks(at most) it'd take for the rumble wouldn't have mattered. They were forced to not include it; which is why the six-axis was added at the last minute, to try to make up for no rumble.

The cable is just a USB to mini-USB cable, you should be able to go buy a long one for pretty cheap.

If you want to go into detail sure. After all the R&D, mass prouduction of Cell chips and Blu Ray ROMs and getting sued by Immersion. Sony would have to jack the price on the rumble due to financial disaster. Again Sony probably lied when they said it disrupts the Blue tooth technology inside the controller.

Sony could have implemented the Rumble then, this lawsuit was 2 years ago and it was before the release of the PS3. Sony ended up paying more than the settlement when it was over. By that time Immersion already had new Rumble technology ready to be implemented into the PS3 controller, and i believe it's Immersions rumble kit they are going to use now.

Blue tooth came about shortly after Nintendo unveiled the Revolution (The Wii) And Nintendo was correct about keeping a tight lid on the Wii mote. Had they held onto it a bit longer, it's unlikely for Sony to implement motion sensing.

Between 10 and 15 bucks. Copper is cheap and profits are made.

Still the one that comes with the PS3 is damn short, which forces "most" of us to pull up a chair in front the TV. Not having to replace that would give the consumers less to complain about. Since they buy in bulk they can make it longer and charge pennies more for the package.

All in all, selling a short cable with the new rumble controller (which will need to be charged more frequently) doesn't seem too bright, wouldn't you agree ?

No it wouldn't. I already bought a longer cable about a week after PS3 launch.

I am weak. I've been waiting for the DS3 to show up here but I just ordered it off of playasia with a $5 off coupon. I wanted the ceramic white and I will get it at about the same price as the "US" version. Turns out there really wasn't much of a reason for me to wait as long as I did. :(

Yeah, Sony paid a shitload in the settlement, but Immersion also stonewalled them in the discussions for using their rumble technology in the new PS3 controllers out of spite. That's why Sony didn't have rumble and Microsoft and Nintendo did; assuming they used Immersion's stuff.

Am I the only one that hates rumble and is glad they aren't in Sony controllers? All they do is waste battery life.

I say get the PS3. I have all 3 and I play the PS3 the most. My DS is still number one though...

If you are a Super Smash Bros fan, get a Wii. It will become my number one played system when that comes out.

There are lots of rival games for both 360 and PS3 that will be great, but the the cry for SSB:B far outweighs R6:V2 and Ao2.

I like rumble. I like the weight it adds. I like the feeling of sturdiness it gives to the controller. I disliked the sixaxis simply because it felt light and therefore cheap (not saying it is cheap just that it feels it). I honestly don't mind wired controllers either. One reason I want the new DS3 is because apparently all the infrequent drop outs I'll experience goes away. Well that and again, I like rumble.

Rewind. The Sixaxis IS cheeeeeap!! The Dual shock 2 casing can take more abuse. Most likely the Sixaxis is made out of the same compound, but uses less material making the shell thinner, probably a measure to reduce production costs. No rumble surly makes it lighter, but even a generation 1 PSX controller with no rumble or analogs feels more hefty and solid.

Still you gotta think about when you're into you're game. There is this small detail we never notice, and that is the fact it comes to a point where you don't even know the Sixaxis is in you're hand while using it. I find that to be comfortable.

Eh, I got mine bundled with the plug and play pack back in January of 2007 or shortly thereafter. Cost about $70. It works with my PC as well when it's plugged in through the Plug and Play USB cable and pack. The only difference between my controller and his is that his is wireless to his computer via another pack. I wondered if people ever bought that thing.

I find it more disruptive than comfortable, because I'd go from my controller's position being irrelevant to being critical and I'd have to change how I was sitting to play better. That's why I like the Wii's motion controls infinitely more, even if some of them are just replacements for extra buttons; because I don't go from nothing to everything in an instant and it's far less disruptive to the flow of gameplay.

But yeah, the first time I picked up a PS3 controller I thought I'd break the damn thing, it feels completely hollow.

I think you must be the only one. I've been hooked on it ever since the first time I played Metal Gear Solid and felt the helicopter taking off in that opening scene. It's just part of the experience now.
