PSP worth it?

Don't know if you know this (you probably do) but I think the biggest turn off movie-wise for the PSP is the fact that they're on UMD. I'm not so bitchy about watching movies on a small screen but it really rubs me the wrong way when I've had to buy a movie 3 times. VHS > DVD > UMD? No thanks.
Wait a couple years. Sony will add UMD slots to DVD players.
And i think i've bought the Star Wars trilogy around 4 times now. Originals>Remasterd>Special Eddition>DVD. And if they come out on UMD, probably those too <,<

DVDs havn't been around long enough to warrent a big migration to UMD, and I know a lot of big movie buffs like myself with huge collections are really hesitant to replace them again. Anyway it's not a few years from now, and a few years from now there will be new portable systems anyway.

My DVD Player is panasonic :p

PS: I've got a 5 gig i-pod photo, MP3 playing stereo with two 12" subs in my car, Nintendo DS, Nintendo GBASP and a playstation 2, havn't really had a mighty need to get a PSP.

What in the Sam Hell is THAT??? Some type of Canadian High Technology????

I only have 2 movies for PSP in UMD format, HGTTG and Stuart Little3 (Don't ask). I'll never buy a movie I already have. If I want to bring one on the road, I rip it and save it to the memory stick.

Personally i love using my psp to watch movies, it's nice being able to go anywhere and watch movies when ever i feel like it. I also have a 1 gig card(plan on getting the 4 gig when it comes out) so i use it as a mp3 player/dvd player. I download my fav old movies onto it(Ninja turtles ftw, also my eps of FLCL)

tho the DS does have some nice games and the touch screen is new and cool and i like how i can play my old Advance games(tho i can't play my gameboy games >.<)

So i guess one person could sit here for hours debating back and forth about which system is better or we can shut up and get both.

I don't usually see the value in a hand helds simply because I don't recall many times where I wasn't at home and felt like or had the freetime to play games. I was reading the May issue of Play Mag and the game review of Monster Hunter Freedom really made me concider getting a PSP.

I've got the DS and the PSP, and I definately prefer the PSP. The PSP can run all sorts of "homebrew" programs if you have older firmware on it. (ver. 1.5 is the best right now compatibility-wise, although 2.0+ is gaining ground.) Right now all I have on it is PSPRadio ver. 0.38.092, an Internet radio station client, but it's a sweet program. :) I fire it up instead of winamp these days when playing FFXI. That way I can avoid using the windower since SE's making such a fuss about it lately.

As for the DS, it's got some good games, but between playing FFXI, using the PSP, and playing PS2 games, the DS is taking a backseat right now, and has for a while. I'm hoping it'll get a title that'll grab my interest so I'll pick it up again.

I think PSP still isn't worth it. Wait until more good games come out. If they come out. If you're going to get a PSP just for movies, you might as well get a portable DVD player. Costs just about as much, and DVD's are actually cheaper than UMD's. Not to mention if you like extras in a DVD, you get them. UMD's usually don't really have anything, and if they do it's nothing great. Or at least last time I checked.

Edit: I did play a PSP for the first time a couple weeks ago. Screen was pretty nice. But load times for a minute to play the NES/Arcade Spy Hunter from a UMD disc? No thanks. Not to mention that thing is fairly uncomfortable to hold with its odd shape and heaviness.

To be honest, I think the biggest selling point behind the DS is it plays GBA games. I love the games on the DS and the fact it has a touch screen, wifi and pictochat - but it having access to not only DS games but the incredibly large/awesome library of GBA games makes it an incredibly worthy portable system purchase if that's what you're buying a portable system for.

You haven't really been clear on what you want to use this handheld for. Everyones pretty much right though, if you want Games go DS, if you want a portable multimedia player go PSP.

Personally I'd wait and see though, E3 is right around the corner and you can get a good glimpse of what both companies are looking to offer over the next year or so. As far as a multimedia player I'd want microsoft to make mine rather than sony, they've got this whole 'bigger is better' thing going on, and would probably go the dvd route rather than trying to impliment two new types of movie formats within 2 years of eachother. =/

Whats cooler than being able to watch porn in study block?

PSP is ok. i havent touched mine in about a month or two. Road Trips ONRY!

Well, a lot of places now are selling a UMD and DVD in a pack for about 20-25 dollars (atleast in my local GameStop I've seent hese). So UMD/DVD problem isn't a big deal cause I can get one movie on both for just slightly more (or even the same) price as the DVD. In my opinion, neither system has all that great in the game department but I'll say that DS prolly has a few more better games than the PSP. Then again, that's a personal preferance. It's all up to what games you like more. Then again, a PSP can play every emulator of like.. NES -> Genesis I think :P that makes it quite nice. PSP has several features over the DS is what I like most. Just your choice really.

Eh, I think it's pretty light for the most part :P and feels somewhat like a PS controller ^^ hehe

anyways, DS has FF3 coming out and that does look.. quite hawt.

I read somewhere that they were going to stop making so many movies into UMDs. Anybody know if this is true?

Let's see lol I have both DS and PsP! So lol here's what I think

DS: I have more games for it! lol fun games too hmm also has better games imo. I Play it at least once a day. 20 games

Psp: Only use it to go on the internet when gf is on comp...and ...... that's it. I regret buying it lol 1 game only too ...

Already have a MP3 player, 2 Dvd players, and no need for a portable dvd player lol just waste of money, so are UMD movies.

That's just me though... lol can't even play roms since I don't mess with the software lol. To tell you the truth I don't know lol if anybody has a good link please tell =D.

I bought my PSP a couple of months back and progress on it has been.. slow.

I usually play my X-Men Legends 2 (very fun game on the road) when I'm bored. I also surf the net when I'm bored and close to a wireless access port. Otherwise it collects dust. I did buy Advent Children for it and I watch that at school when I've got my 1-2 hour breaks.

Some great games are planned to be released for the PSP though. Including a new Tekken game (which looks brilliant) and Breath of Fire III (ported). The new Mega-Man games that came out for it recieved rave reviews and are some of the hardest Blue Bomber missions yet.

Sony has revealed that they plan to have the PSP and the PS3 synch up to do various things. Transfering movies and net files wirelessly, as long as both are hooked up to the net. You could be playing your favorite game on your friends PS3, and then decide you want to boot up your save. Get your PS3 to send the save-game file to your PSP and hook it up to your friends PS3. Other cool features are planned too. We'll just have to wait to see what's in store.

I've heard that the PSP's web browser is going to keep getting better and better with the updates. It may be a good investment, but it depends if you have the money to spend or not. As for your original questions: I'm a notorious charger. I charge my PSP every night, or just leave it on the charger. Usually I can get a good 5 hours out of it, depending on what I'm doing. The back lighting helps but the screen is highly reflective and can be cumbersome if you don't hold it a certain way.

Dont go for a PSP (I can not beleive I am about to say this...), just go for the next-gen iPod. The next-gen iPod will have gaming capabilitys, so... yeah, longer battery life (hopefully) and roms without constant patches to block them out. And longer battery life. And more storage. ...And more battery life.

I'm curious to see what decision Sculli settled on, or if he's even made one. This thread has gone as far as I think it's going to go, and I believe we've reached a consensus:

If you're in it for the games: Get a DS.

If you want versatility, and cool extras: Get a PSP.

I know that the original question was "is it worth it," but that really depends on what you want out of it. It sounds like you want something to fill your away hours, though, so it's going to be down to those two.

I have a GBA, I am just going to stick to that, I am just going to be away for like 10 days and I am taking my laptop too, not worth burning the cash on the PSP, especially since I wouldn't use it to watch movies or browse the web or whatever.

If you want a PSP i would advise getting a PDA. Will probably cost a bit more but it will do the job better. Hell the games on PDA are probably better even if you ignore the fact they don't bother blocking emulators.

Join the dark side and load the Laptop with Sega Genisis GBA SNES NES Arcade Turbo Grafx 16 and pack it with every game you ever wanted back then.

Do it !
