Golden Week starts very soon in Japan, which is a bunch of holidays morphed together in order to give people a full week off from work and school. With all the time off, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to open up communications again between the EN and JP players.

To begin, I'm going to start this thread in several forums and take questions. The questions will then be posted on JP-based forums to be read and answered, and their new questions will be brought back. The results of compiled questions and answers will be presented on JP Button, but to participate you need only reply in your forum of choice. The JP Button Community Team will be monitoring all the threads involved in the Q&A project. Your feedback is important to us.

In addition to the discussion itself, Corinth is constructing a survey that will be posted along with the results pages on the site. If you find the Q&A project interesting, we would really appreciate it if you filled out the survey, so we could present more data about each side of the player base. With the Q&A and survey results together, I think there is real potential here to help English and Japanese players understand each other much better. I hope you agree and help us out with this project. We're even figuring out how to throw a prize in there for a lucky survey participant (art book, manga, etc.)

To begin, just submit any burning questions in this thread. Any questions or comments about the project itself can be posted or PM'd or e-mailed. If you have concerns with someone else's questions, you can address the issue (e.g. "It was asked already") without flaming.

As a reminder of the questions asked last time, you can view the following link:

Hey Elmer, good to see you outside of bg~

The Q&A was an interesting read. Definitly go into it with an open mind, and consider things from their point-of-view.
It also reminded me of my first week ingame;
I was in Ronf and was about to be murdered by a Forest Hare (this was before I understood the /check command.) and a japanese hume came over and cheered me on, and then tossed in a cure.
THAT right there, is what keeps me wanting to become a strong player. ^^
Where ever you are Sachii, I still am greatful for your help.

Thanks for all the hard work Elmer, and great to see you on QCDN!

I would like the question: What can NAs do in parties with JPs to play more like JP players do? (So as to seem a good party member to JPs) Especially if the NA doesn't know any Japanese.

It's alot harder to make new questions up since we asked most of what we wanted to say the first time. The cor question(why do you use that stupd /whm sj on cor),blah blah ACp. most have been asked already.
http://www.bluegartrls.com/forum/72976-anyone-play-bells-yet.html I'd like to know what songs they've made with the bells for fun.
It's the only main question i can think of that hasn't been asked yet.

I really liked reading about this when you first did it; it was very insightful. I appreciate your efforts in improving relationships between the different FFXI communities.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the many members of the Japanese community on Quetzalcoatl who go out of their way to be cordial and helpful. I have not personally experienced much bad blood between NA/JP here, and that is wonderful.

The percentage of the NA community that can speak or even understand Japanese is fairly small. What are some specific words or actions a NA player can do to indicate he is polite and thoughtful and helpful? What are some specific things he can say or do to help you feel more comfortable participating in an event with him?

my question would be this: Do you think a JP/NA only server would help or hurt the FFXI community?

i ask this cause i talked this over with NA players after the first Q&A we saw last year. many JP players said they would join a JP only server for the convenience it offered. I think it would quietly reinforce the stereotypes each race has about the other. cause there would be no communication between players.

Q: What are your views on the recentish kill of Pandemonium Warden?

Q: Do you think that a dynamis schedule on a forum to avoid zone conflicts is a good thing? Would you like to see SE adjust this so multiple shells can enter the zone at the same time?

Thanks for the comments :D

I have a list of selected questions up on the site now: http://www.jpbutton.com/?p=2863

I made sure to get the Dynamis question in, since that seemed to be a unanimous concern across all forums.

I'll let you guys know once I've gotten the answers translated and posted.

Thanks again!

Results are going to be up soon, I hope. It turns out lots of Japanese do use their own Dynamis scheduling systems. However, it's almost unanimous that a central system to coordinate with foreigners would be next to impossible. They feel like no moderator team could effectively mediate disputes between the languages and effectively communicate every little detail that may arise. Not to mention, people who ignore scheduling systems now will only ignore all the effort that would go into creating a combined one. :(

JP Player Return Questions

Check out the link to see the return questions for us foreigners. You may contribute your responses by posting here, commenting on JPB or just sending along an e-mail. I want to allow everyone to participate, so I'll still be making the rounds and checking out the various forums for input.

Thanks for participating!

2. Parties that cycle in replacement members seem to be popular amongst foreigners, but a lot of times the party will just disband once the replacement arrives. Of course, there are times when the replacement is contacted before they get all the way there, but there are many instances when no one says anything. There are also many cases where inappropriate jobs are invited and the party can no longer function well.

To me, this is a big reason behind some of the negative images Japanese players have about foreign players. What do you think about this?

I hate when people get a replacement, although I have noticed an increasing amount of JP players are doing so too. Whether this is that they feel it is the right thing to do with a non-JP party I don't know. Replacements nearly always kill my mood to party, especially as 9 times out of 10 they are unannounced. I often find myself telling the party that I have 30 minutes remaining only to hear "Yeah but I have a replacement coming". When I make parties I prefer people to tell me if they want to leave and then I can talk with the rest of the party and make sure it's worth a replacement coming out, that and I can make sure that if we do get a replacement that it's a job that will fit well with our party set-up. More often than not once one person wants to leave someone else does too and it's really not fair on a replacement coming out.

This is also the reason why I have Replacement <No, Thanks> in my search comment most of the time nowadays.

9. I wonder if you calculate the XP/hr of parties, and if so, do you think that Skillchain/Magic Burst or Weaponskill spam produces the best results? Before parsing became widespread, Japanese players used to think Skillchain/Magic Burst was the best.

Weaponskill spam are the best for exp, however skillchain and magic burst are much more fun. Sadly SE decided to make mobs like Colibri that reflect black magic.

10. How come it seems like so many people don’t utilize Search Comments properly? Why don’t they write their camp location for others to see? Also, it’s strange to see so many people seeking without basic information written like available jobs and where they can access. Don’t you want an invite?

Pure lazyness and it annoys me to no end. It takes a few seconds and I find a search comment or lack of tells a lot about the player, better players seem to have a nice clear search comment. I always take people who have search comments over those that don't. With Level Sync nowadays I like being able to see if people are willing to sync to the level I want.

1. Do foreign players have a lot of interest in joining social Japanese Linkshells? [...]

>>> My Honest answer, Social? no. I personally would feel really alienated in a JP social shell. I am currently in a JP Dynamis shell, and have quite a few JP buddies that i do other events with. But I find my humor doesn't translate well.

>>> This is bullshit on our end too.... We HATE it. But unfortunately there really are a lot of inconsiderate folks. They just don't think. Personally I try to never be a replacement in a party and go through the effort to give the party leader a hard time, for wasting mine.

3. Why does it seem like many foreign players don’t bother to bring medicines and potions to Missions and BCs? Many Japanese players make sure to have Vile Elixirs, Hi-Potions and/or Reraise Earrings.

>>> Not making excuses, I personally come prepared for MISSIONS, but in general I travel light. However, I am not going to lie, a lot of people are lazy and just think that stuff doesn't matter, it pisses us "foreigners" off too. Before the Mog Satchel, space was limited. Maybe it seems excessive, but my typical job carried roughly 55 Pieces of gear on rare occasion, leaving 5 spaces for food/tools, and 10 slots on average for drops.

>>> COUNTER-QUESTION: From Observations the JP community doesn't seem as fanatical or obsessive about equipment swaps. A typical Samurai for instance has a DD set, Weaponskill Set, and a Damage mitigation set for emergencies at the least. Most JP I seen only have DD/WS sets. Stipulation to this question: "Gear doesn't matter, skill only matters" is not an excuse for being poorly equipped.

4. Sometimes I see foreign pick-up parties recruiting for members using Auto-Translate, but then when I join the party, all the conversation and battle planning is in English.[...]

>>> People want a quick fix. They don't care about the people, they care about the mission. I have tongue lashed quite a few folks that berate JPs for shouting only in JP; and had to explain to them the opposite, when a NA shouts in Autotrans that its almost worse.

5. How many NA and EU players do Campaign? Any thoughts about the recent nerf to Fortifications?[...]

>>> You could fight fortifications?
Joking aside, I always got more EXP fighting mobs anyways, so I avoided the forts unless there were absolutely no foes around. I see a lot less people doing campaign in general, not sure if the fortification adjustment had any effect on this or if its just general burn out as with most events.

Horrible look/Great Stats:

Enkidu's Set.
Scorpion/Antares Harness

Ninja Chainmail
Gaia Doublet
Askar(Sans Helmet)
Noble's Tunic
Homam Cosciales

>>> Pup is the only job I really do this on:

Relic Hat
Cerise Doublet
Artifact Hands
Usukane Kizayoroi
Usukane Sune-Ate

The one piece of gear I got almost strictly for looks: Magnifying Spectacles.

Best results = Most fun.
Most fun = best people.

I been in really horrible parties exp-wise and had a blast.
I been in really awesome exp parties and was miserable.

EXP/Hr with least effort: WS spam, Parsed, does 4-5x more EXP/Hr than a SCMB pt.

11. If you know you are going to be busy, how come you don’t alert people at the beginning of the party instead of surprising everyone at the last minute?

>>> To be fair... It should be NO surprise to ANYONE, JP or NA, that due to the game's design, there's no way to plan for certain events popping up. For the dipshits that decide to go on a merit pt 45 minutes before their dynamis group gathers... I can offer no excuse however...

>>> On this server we're predominantly "/nin" folks. Sure some are infected with the /bg/ "/sam" rhetoric... And a lot of guys are under the impression that they are invincible and only make 300,000/hr while doing 2,000 dmg weapon skills every 22 seconds. But realistically, we try to do 4 melee, healer support. Maybe they include Brds and Cor as a melee in the original question. But I rarely(if ever) see 5 melee and a Mage.

Do foreign players have a lot of interest in joining social Japanese Linkshells? (Especially ones with only JP members) I ask because when I recruit for my shell in Japanese, I get a lot of tells from foreigners looking to join. Personally, I feel like even if they could understand my /shout, it still would be hard to keep up with regular conversation. They wouldn’t understand pop-culture references to old TV shows, for instance.

My Einherjar shell is predominantly JP, and my Nyzul Isle static is all JP, though there is one member who is bilingual. I really enjoy both events because the people who participate are dedicated, positive, and fun. Though we communicate mostly through auto-translate, we manage to communicate very effectively, and have developed friendships. I would not mind being in a social shell with any of those people as I consider them friends. It does take effort to overcome the communication barrier, but it is definitely worth it.

Most EN players dislike this practice as well. If I am leading a party, I appreciate it if someone offers to find a replacement, but I will generally poll the group to determine how much longer the remaining members have and then, if there is enough time, search an appropriate replacement myself.

I wish I knew!! I appreciate it very much when players come prepared. Players without Echo Drops or Silent Oil or Prism Powders drive me crazy, and I am less likely to invite someone to an event again when they aren’t prepared the first time.

It feels like I was tricked.
That is rude, and I am sorry that happened to you. When partying with a group who doesn’t all speak the same language, it is best to use the auto-translate function as much as possible to avoid confusion and to ensure no member feels left out.

I rarely do campaign; I just don’t have enough time. I know many of my friends enjoy it a lot, though.

What equipment do you think has the best graphics?
There isn’t really any one piece of gear that I think looks horrible, though I find that many effective gear combinations look pretty laughable. Like my Dark Magic set for BLM, which includes a Nashira Manteel, BLM AF pants, and BLM Relic hands.
I really like the look of full Nashira armor.

The event gear (like a dream hat, for example). My favorite piece of casual equipment is anything that has a star on it (Prudence Rod, Uggy Pendant, etc.). I love stars. 

LOL! I think most EN male players would just as soon have their Mithra not wearing anything.

I remember Skillchain/Magic Burst parties. They were fun. It is rare to find one anymore. Most melee will party with a RDM and BRD and spam weaponskills for merit parties while BLM will manaburn or solo. I think that a melee heavy party that spams weaponskills will get better XP/hr, but it is not very fun since its monotonous for all involved.

I notice many players do use their /seacoms. I have encountered players with more than 1 level 75 job who didn’t even know what a search comment was, though. If they don’t use it, I think its just because they don’t understand how to or what the benefits are.

Unfortunately, sometimes things come up unexpectedly. I always try to inform those participating in an event with me of any possible interruptions well in advance, but sometimes it is not possible.

Honestly, the largest difference in thinking between Japanse and foreign players exists in the Merit party. You often say 5 DDs and a RDM is so good, but having a single, solitary healer is hard on the RDM. Japanese realize that healers can be in short supply, so we make sacrifices to lighten their burden, like subbing a mage job, or using Utsusemi. I feel like many people don’t show proper respect to healers. When we say JP ONLY, it isn’t always an issue of language, but the fact that we feel there are other dangers and demerits associated with a non-JP party, stemming from our different play-styles, that we wish to avoid.
This key difference in thinking, more than any race or language issue, is what really sets us apart as players. They are just looking to sit back, relax and earn some decent XP.
Most merit parties are 4 DD and two support jobs (like RDM, BRD, or COR). I wind up main healing a lot on RDM in that type of setting, and I rarely have issues keeping up with MP provided everyone subs NIN and can keep shadows up the majority of the time. It really depends on the skill level of the involved players. If a DD can’t keep shadows up, I will have to cure him more, and it will slow us down because I will have to rest. If I have to cure bomb a DD to keep him alive (and consequently pull hate myself) because he refuses to help mitigate his damage (like with shadows), I will let him die and not feel bad about it in hopes that it will teach them a lesson.
I have also seen RDM who cannot maintain a haste cycle and BRD that can't pull effectively, which can slow the group down as well.
I have participated in very effective merit parties with 3 DD and 3 support jobs (RDM./WHM, BRD/NIN, and COR/RNG), and those are probably my favorite. It can be difficult to find all three support jobs available, though.

I'm glad to see you on QCDN Elmer^^

1. Do foreign players have a lot of interest in joining social Japanese Linkshells? Personally, I feel like even if they could understand my /shout, it still would be hard to keep up with regular conversation. They wouldn’t understand pop-culture references to old TV shows, for instance.
I was in an hnm shell with a lot of Japanese speaking people. My play time at the time was during Japanese prime hours, and it was very strange not knowing what people were saying. If you speak Japanese, I'm sure it would be a lot more fun.

I wish this could be avoided. Sometimes people don't mention that they need to leave until a replacement for another member is almost to camp. And once one person says they need to go, others do. Sometimes it's easier to just disband when this happens. I would rather disband than invite a job that isn't appropriate.. Inviting an extra White Mage to replace a Samurai doesn't work out well.

Why does it seem like many foreign players don’t bother to bring medicines and potions to Missions and BCs? Many Japanese players make sure to have Vile Elixirs, Hi-Potions and/or Reraise Earrings.
I've noticed this too. And I have no idea. I think a lot of the time people don't look at a guide before they go, and expect others to do it for them. Maybe I'm wrong though.

4. Sometimes I see foreign pick-up parties recruiting for members using Auto-Translate, but then when I join the party, all the conversation and battle planning is in English. I’ll ask for them to {Please use the Auto-Translate function.} but nobody ever does. If you are going to /shout for help with the Auto-Translator, why not use it in the party? It feels like I was tricked.
If I invite you using the autotranslate function, I use it during the entire party when talking about what we are going to be doing. I try to explain everything, and if people in the party don't.. I make sure to mention that there are Japanese people and it would be more effective if they kept actual battle planning to autotranslate, or simple english.

5. How many NA and EU players do Campaign? Any thoughts about the recent nerf to Fortifications?
I wish I had time to do more Campaign. I did it a lot when it was first introduced. But not so much anymore.

6.What equipment do you think has great stats but horrible looks?
What equipment do you think has the best graphics?
Oh! I really hate the new Royal Redingote! It is terrible looking, but quite useful.
The prettiest piece of armor.. hm. I'd say the scholar relic body. I think it's cute.

7. Outside of your normal party gear, is there any equipment that you go out of your way to get strictly for looks? What are your favorite pieces of casual equipment?
I love to wear the event gear. I always wear it throughout the event, while in town, to be festive. My favorite is the Savage Top +1. I like how it looks with my bard af1 pants.

8. I’m a Mithra, and I find that a lot of foreigners seem to be into Mithra fashion. They examine me and ask where I got my equipment and such. Do you think male players enjoy dressing up their Mithra in cute outfits?
I think they do! I'm a girl, and I love to dress up my mithra..I could imagine males liking it a lot more :)

9. I wonder if you calculate the XP/hr of parties, and if so, do you think that Skillchain/Magic Burst or Weaponskill spam produces the best results? Before parsing became widespread, Japanese players used to think Skillchain/Magic Burst was the best.
I miss skillchaining and magic bursts in parties. It made it fun. I didn't feel like a grind, because you had to be paying attention. I wouldn't mind my xp being gimped to have more fun.

10. How come it seems like so many people don’t utilize Search Comments properly? Why don’t they write their camp location for others to see? Also, it’s strange to see so many people seeking without basic information written like available jobs and where they can access. Don’t you want an invite?
Search comments are important!!!!!!!! More people need to use them. It makes life so much easier.

11. If you know you are going to be busy, how come you don’t alert people at the beginning of the party instead of surprising everyone at the last minute?
That's a good question. I'd hope people would be more vocal about these things as well. Some people may feel uncomfortable with autotranslate to explain that they will be busy at a certain time. So maybe they wait so they can say "AFK 10 minutes"..

12. Honestly, the largest difference in thinking between Japanse and foreign players exists

This key difference in thinking, more than any race or language issue,
is what really sets us apart as players. They are just looking to sit back, relax

Please feel free to provide your own insight and thoughts.
I'm slightly confused, because most parties I'm in are DD, DD, DD, BRD, DD, RDM(WHM)..Although I am a bard, and haven't ever had to deal without one. I think a party of 5 DD and a mage would be terrible. there is no way that could be as effective. That would be incredibly stressful on the mage, without extra refresh, and no songs on the DD to kill faster. I'm definitely intrigued that the play styles are so different. I never really thought about it much until now, because I've had Japanese players in my merit parties often, and we've had a lot of fun.

What type of sushi do you like best?
Oh no :( I'm sure this will sadden you, but I don't enjoy sushi at all.

Since I cant speak japanese I don't think id gain very much from joining a JP social linkshell. Don't think that we NA wouldn't get any refrences to your pop culture you'd be suprised what kind of your old shows we've seen especily in regards to anime and manga.

2. Parties that cycle in replacement members seem to be popular amongst foreigners, but a lot of times the party will just disband once the replacement arrives. To me, this is a big reason behind some of the negative images Japanese players have about foreign players. What do you think about this?

I have no problem with rotating party members as long as everyone has the time to stay and we can find a rep that will not affect the exp/hr.

Why does it seem like many foreign players don’t bother to bring medicines and potions to Missions and BCs? Many Japanese players make sure to have Vile Elixirs, Hi-Potions and/or Reraise Earrings.

Laziness laziness laziness. Don't get to turned off too much some people are new and just haven't found a huge a stable source of gil which can be difficult becasue nobody shares that information with each other.

Don't be fooled by the fact their using the auto translate alot of NA's are lazy and use it so they dont have to type as much.

5. How many NA and EU players do Campaign? Any thoughts about the recent nerf to Fortifications?

I love Campaign Battles. It's a great place to finish levels get my buffer up and get somewhat decent merits. I really think Fortification nerf was a bad idea. The best part about the beastman controled areas was that it made campaign battles last longer. The longer a Battle last the greater chance you have of getting all the exp you earned without some of it being cut off by the time caps. The nerf eliminates a big factor of what made these battles so great.

6.What equipment do you think has great stats but horrible looks?
What equipment do you think has the best graphics?

Walhara Turban and the Hauberon. 2 great peices of gear that look like total garbage.

7. Outside of your normal party gear, is there any equipment that you go out of your way to get strictly for looks? What are your favorite pieces of casual equipment?

Only if I get it for free.

8. I’m a Mithra, and I find that a lot of foreigners seem to be into Mithra fashion. They examine me and ask where I got my equipment and such. Do you think male players enjoy dressing up their Mithra in cute outfits?

I always preferd the hume females.

9. I wonder if you calculate the XP/hr of parties, and if so, do you think that Skillchain/Magic Burst or Weaponskill spam produces the best results? Before parsing became widespread, Japanese players used to think Skillchain/Magic Burst was the best

I think the problem is that although Skillchain and Magic burst is good in some places its just plain blown away in exp parties.

10. How come it seems like so many people don’t utilize Search Comments properly? Why don’t they write their camp location for others to see? Also, it’s strange to see so many people seeking without basic information written like available jobs and where they can access. Don’t you want an invite?

I Think I might start doing this when I make parties it would be a great help to see what camps are open.

11. If you know you are going to be busy, how come you don’t alert people at the beginning of the party instead of surprising everyone at the last minute?

I don't Like this either If your going to be in my party I really want you to put everything you have into it.

12. Honestly, the largest difference in thinking between Japanse and foreign players exists

I feel like many people don’t show proper respect to healers.

When we say JP ONLY, it isn’t always an issue of language,
but the fact that we feel there are other dangers and demerits associated with
a non-JP party, stemming from our different play-styles, that we wish to avoid.

This key difference in thinking, more than any race or language issue,
is what really sets us apart as players. They are just looking to sit back, relax
and earn some decent XP.

Please feel free to provide your own insight and thoughts.

This 5 dds and a RDM thing never results in a good merit party.

I think the merit party problem comes down to the fact that while JP would like to sit back relax and get decent exp NA's wish to put everything they can into it and get awesome exp.

Bonus I LOVE SUSHI. I Can eat almost any kind of sushi but my all time favorite would be spicy tuna.

1. They wouldn’t understand pop-culture references to old TV shows, for instance.

well iam not interested since i cant speak JP , but i would like to join if i was able to read it

What do you think about this?

sadly this happen to us aswell but if i was a leader i always ask how much time everyone have before we call a replacement

Why does it seem like many foreign players don’t bother to bring medicines and potions to Missions and BCs? Many Japanese players make sure to have Vile Elixirs, Hi-Potions and/or Reraise Earrings.

same as above ... some player are cheap , and look for an easy win

It feels like I was tricked.

save as above ...

5. How many NA and EU players do Campaign? Any thoughts about the recent nerf to Fortifications?

i stll do campaign when iam free

What equipment do you think has great stats but horrible looks?
What equipment do you think has the best graphics?

O.hat !
i like the arabic style of Homam and Ares set

Outside of your normal party gear, is there any equipment that you go out of your way to get strictly for looks? What are your favorite pieces of casual equipment?

full Ares !

I’m a Mithra, and I find that a lot of foreigners seem to be into Mithra fashion. They examine me and ask where I got my equipment and such. Do you think male players enjoy dressing up their Mithra in cute outfits?

i know a lot of guys who play as Mithra .....

I wonder if you calculate the XP/hr of parties, and if so, do you think that Skillchain/Magic Burst or Weaponskill spam produces the best results? Before parsing became widespread, Japanese players used to think Skillchain/Magic Burst was the best.

so do i , as DD job i always have my skillchain chart with

10. How come it seems like so many people don’t utilize Search Comments properly? Why don’t they write their camp location for others to see? Also, it’s strange to see so many people seeking without basic information written like available jobs and where they can access. Don’t you want an invite?

well i always use my Search Comments ... but it get ignored due its time needed for its to show up in the screen

11. If you know you are going to be busy, how come you don’t alert people at the beginning of the party instead of surprising everyone at the last minute?

some player logout or leave the party if they didnt like the xp/hr rate , odd jobs set up or if there is someone who they don't like in the party

but its not acceptable even here in NA side

12. Honestly, the largest difference in thinking between Japanse and foreign players exists
in the Merit party.
You often say 5 DDs and a RDM is so good, but having a single, solitary healer is hard
on the RDM.
Japanese realize that healers can be in short supply, so we make sacrifices to lighten
their burden, like subbing a mage job, or using Utsusemi.
