QCDN Community Standards discussion

The new QCDN Community Standards have been posted.

I am sure there will be quite a few questions about the new policy. Please do keep in mind that the new policy is now in effect, thus it is necessary that you adjust your posting style to meet these new standards immediately.

If you are a Junior or Senior Premium member, and you would like a refund of your QCDN contribution on the grounds of you not agreeing to the new direction QCDN is headed in, please send me a PM or email, and I will refund your subscription in short order. Refund requests will have to be received in May 2006, any later request can not be granted. I will keep your refund request confidential.

As you may have noticed, there is a "Report Post" button next to the online indicator now. Reporting a post will create a new thread in a forum that can be accessed by mods and myself. This new thread will include who reported the post, for what reason, in which thread, by whom it was posted, and the entire text of that post.

qcdn has been lacking a general set of guidelines like these for a long time, and i fully support these new rules.

intelligent discussion can only happen if people are willing to debate and discuss things in mature and/or respectful manner.

I disagree with the way the forum is heading but if it is what the majority wants, I will pick up a bible and thump it with you all.

GO CAREBEARS HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY

I welcome the change.

It'll be nice to have an enforceable standard everyone can be held to by one means or another.

Huzzah for structured, intelligent, respectful conversation.

There IS structured, intelligent, respectful conversation in almost every single thead not located in the flameboard. In my whole time visiting these forums I have not yet seen disrespect in the main forums pertaining to the game.

In every forum system dedicated to online RPGs there is always still, regardless of whatever it is that you are doing, a place to vent. A place to vent your frustrations with people in the game, with aspects of the game, and what-not. What should never be acceptable under those circumstances however are things such as outright racism.

If any individual so happens to not like what they see or read, they DO have a choice in ignoring that forum altogether. I don't see why you have to go out and take an entire forum out because people who dislike that type of conversation concurrently cannot keep their eyes OFF of the threads in there.

I dunno, I see this as a red hearing. If you want to enforce new guidlines, do it. But your deleting the flameboard and creating a new forum that will serve the same purpose. Now while it will be tamer than the old flameboard, it will serve the same fuction as the flame board just with new rules.

That being said, I would only ask that you lock the flameboard not delete it. Deleting it would give some people a free pass for past stupity.

And what consititues harrasment? If someone rips me off or is a crappy player, can I still call them out or at least give others a warning?

The bolded is something that i find true for the most part, but that's exactly the problem elsewhere in the boards, juvenility still has the option to run rampant wherever the game is not involved such as political/religious/cultural/etc threads.

As i see it there will still be a place to vent with the changes but it will require some kind of responsibility on the part of the posters. I can't see it as anything but a good thing when considering the big picture. This is a community sight, not a blog to vent your personal frustrations that have nothing to do with the game or the community this site serves.

The issue of ignoring a post that leaves a bad taste in your mouth is a problem of self-control. Numerous people have problems just leaving something they find in bad taste on the internet alone and not wasting their time with it. I'd say these changes will go a long way to improve the overall experience of those using the board and might actually lend itself to more functionality in the capacity of a community tool as opposed to a place people use to come to blow off steam or pick on their target of choice.

But the overall good comes from enforcement, not simply laying the rules out, as history has shown. Numerous attempts have been made to clarify the last paragraph you posted, Cohen, the problem is they went unheeded. This is the most logical and practical alternative, IMO.

Exactly.

If there is someone in the zone that is a constant freeloader (and this has been happening in some of the lower level zones.. player joins party and goes afk as soon as the fight starts, leeches as much xp as they can get being afk, and then joins another party for the same thing when they come back to the comp), or someone that just flatly does not do his job (RMT's, whm's that don't heal)..

I EXPECT TO KNOW ABOUT IT.

But if I come out here and say..hey guys, watch out for player A..he is a jackass that does x y and z. That could be interpreted as me indirectly harassing and badmouthing another member of the FFXI community.

The bottom line is that people, in the end, have a right to either not read, or read these "flames".. and I fail to see why you see it as your bush-esque responsibility to dictate it for them.

So does this mean you'll take action against people for posting junk, jibberish, and the rest of the stuff? Because the comunity can't anymore.

Not trying to come off as sucking up or anything but..... he does run the site and all. Bush-esque? that's a low blow, it's not like he invaded allakhazam in the name of decency against all rational judgement or anything :P

QCDN is not a democracy.

It's not like it was some kind of secret or anything. It's just that it hasen't gone to this kind of extreme since .... well, since Sculli took back over and we saw our first FB overhaul.

Like I said elsewhere, this change is a drastic one, and I can understand that there will be some users who are unhappy about it. In the end those users have two main choices, they can either get with the program, or they can find another place where now unacceptable behavior is tolerated or encouraged.

The Neighborhood Watch is a forum where factual complaints about bad players can be posted. The emphasis is on factual. Let's take:

"hey guys, watch out for player A..he is a jackass that does x y and z."

... which is unacceptable, however:

"hey guys, watch out for player A..he does x y and z."

is acceptable if x y and z are true.

Of course there will always be a gray area as to what's really true, and what was perceived to be true. Members are expected to use good judgment when it comes to posting their bad experiences.

In terms of venting, if posting factual accounts is not enough to vent, if venting has to include cussing, baseless accusations, Chuck Norris style verbal roundhouse kicks to everyone's face who dares to step too close, then one is encouraged to take that kind of venting elsewhere. I hear offtopic.com is a great place for that sort of thing.

We did need the new boards, but we could have done it without the removal of the flamebord. Could have just made it a usergroup acces, thus if you dont want to see any of it at all, you wouldnt even be able to see it at all.

My only problem with your argument is that you talk of people with self control issues, yet reading the flameboard is a choice. If it effects the qcdn experiance badly for ya, don't read it

I dunno how I feel about these changes. I guess it depends in how the new rules are enforced. Though the fact the flameboard is already closed is kinda a shock.

The general notion is that those who post disregarding the QCDN Community Standards will be warned, and should that not suffice, their QCDN membership will be revoked.

Of course this will be a gradual process as it will take a few days for people to realize there are new rules (though I am working on something that will require people to at least look at them once in order to proceed).

Between the report post feature, and some new moderators I hope to add within the next few days, I do expect to be able to maintain those standards.

i still think a "stupid vent" section would be nice. No replies, just new topics for people to thow out FFXI based rants about the system (the new claim system thread being an example)
Also, threads like the BOF account theft dont exactly fit into General, or anywhere else for that matter under the new system. (well, neighborhood watch maybe, but only after it had been discovered who the thief was.)

That speaks exactly to my point. While it's quite easy for most people to simply roll their eyes and move on, there are some who feel the need against all better judgement to clutter a thread up with useless posturing which ultimately serves no purpose whatsoever. The option was certainly there to post responsibly, but it obviously wasen't excercised enough and the quality and usefullness of the board suffered as a whole.

The whole thing reminds me of a moth rushing to it's demise in the lamplight. Some people just can't/wont help it.

Yes, but I not speaking to the moth. I see your argument much like the people who slow down to see an accident. You lament the accident, are angry at all the people who slowed down, but are guitly of the same. People don't have to read the flame board. Exercise self control and don't read it if bothers you. Just keep on trucking to good times or off topic.

That being said, this is sculli's saloon. He can tend bar however he likes.

Why do some people feel the need to have a place to vent their negativity on the community? It's completely unnecessary and not tolerated in normal society... actually you would normally get arrested for harrassing someone or a group of people in public like some of you feel the need to do, if not get kicked out of whatever place you were in.

There is no need for the flameboard, and yes it should be deleted and all the filth and megabytes of space it consumes on the webserver that costs Sculli money.

I just want to point out that whether or not there is a FB is not up for discussion. The FB will be deleted tomorrow night, it's a done deal.

This thread is for feedback regarding the QCDN Community Standards in terms of whether there is anything missing that should be covered. Whether anything included is too vague. That sort of thing.
