QCDN [How-To] tutorials wanted

I am looking for volunteers to create the following tutorials for QCDN use:

- how to join a public group
- how to upload your avatar
- how to edit your signature (show vBulletin functionality, not how to make a sig)
- how to add a user to your ignore list
- how to change the thread cut off age temporarily and permanently
- how to subscribe to a thread, including explanation of the different notifications
- how to subscribe to a forum
- how to add an event to the calendar

These How-Tos ought to be very visual. so there should be appropriately cropped screenshots (I can take care of optimizing file size). I will host the screens here at QCDN, so you can just make a How-To post, and insert <INSERT SCREEN X HERE> tags where screenshots should go, and I will insert the shots into the appropriate places, and move the post to the yet to be created How-To forum.

I meant to create all of the above for a long time, but I just never get around to it, even though some of these would probably only take like 15 minutes to create.

If you feel that there should be more How-Tos, feel free to either create them, or at least add your suggestion here.

Thanks.

Sorry, Sculli. I never saw this one.
I can write up something for the Ignore List function. :)

OK!

I seriously doubt we need screenies for the Ignore List function, so here goes:

***Click on the user's name, above their avatar, title, etc. that you'd like to "ignore" and this will bring up a menu.

***Click "View Public Profile"

***Click "Add UserXorIsotopewouldworktoolol to your Ignore List"

***Click Submit

Ding! Fries are done!

How to... Upload an avatar!

How to... Upload an Avatar!

1. Find a suitable image to use as your avatar. (Preferrably: an avatar that doesn't offend anyone through swear words and/or nudity.)
2. Make sure your avatar fits specific size regulations for QCDN, which are currently 150x150 pixels maximum. If your image already fits into these criteria, there is no need to edit it, but if it doesn't, use the miniguide below to help structure your avatar.
3. Upload to a site that alows you to store images, for example:

http://imageshack.us
http://photobucket.com
http://xs.to
http://tinypic.com

3. Alternatively, upload your image straight to QCDN by following the next steps.
4. Go to your UserCP here on QCDN (http://www.qcdn.org/usercp.php) and then go to Edit Avatar (http://www.qcdn.org/profile.php?do=editavatar) and choose where it says "Use Custom Avatar" and either input the url that the image uploading website gave you to your image where it says Enter Avatar Url (for example: http://www.imagehostingwebsite.com/yourimage.gif). Or you can browse to the specific location of the avatar on your computer and upload the avatar straight to QCDN.
5. If this was all too much for you, you can always look through some of the default avatar pictures provided here on QCDN and use that as your avatar.

How to edit the size of an image, with mspaint

1. Load up mspaint and then find the image by going to File -> Load and browsing to the location of the file.
2. Click on the rectangular marquee button (see pic) and then drag a box roughly over the image you wish to crop.

3. Drag the edge of the marquee you just made so that it increases/decreases in size untill the picture is how you want it to be.
4. Erase the unwanted parts of the image (the parts you didn't crop) and resize your background to fit the image by dragging the bottom right hand corner of the background.
5. Save as either .gif or .jpg.

If this isn't screenshot heavy enough I can provide some more screenshots on the process, especially on the image editing side of it. Just say if needs be.

lol, so much thread necro'ing I can't help but contribute. Fireworks tutorial in the making.

free 30 day trial of course. I format almost monthly anyways, although somehow I don't see that as legal either >.>

Blabj! Thanks for the write-up, I will make that into it's own thread in the guidelines section tomorrow.

Mai Ikari made a sig tutorial quite a while ago, using GIMP as example, see How To Make A Signature/Avatar Image on QCDN, but it has since become a little outdated and could use a refresher.

Speaking of 30-day trial versions. If you (as in you the reader) want to go all out, you could use the Captivate 3 trial to create Flash tutorials covering the vBulletin aspects of the how-to thingies. It should be of reasonable width though, not to exceed 1280, it would be even better to keep it to 1024.

Well, I've not seen captivate before, but I have some knowlege of flash, so I guess there wouldn't be any harm in having a look at the program itself :) I'll get back to you once it's downloaded and I've had a look at it's capabilitys and stuff, heh.

I am really good in Flash as well. Me and you should talk on AIM sometime Blabj.

edit: Sculli, I got captivate sussed fairly easily, I was workin on the group membership joining tutorial when i realised there wasn't any groups I could temp join.. heh, would it be okay for you to set up a temporary group for me to join just for the tutorial?
Thanks
Blabj

The Captivate thing creates Flash output, but one doesn't have to know Flash to use it. It's basically some sort of user interface capturing software.
