<3 Thought so, just kinda drunk and pissed my damn PC isn't back from the shop yet........ Long story...
I guess i could start a flame about that =\

I'm guessing you got drunk the other day, got a little frisky with your PC, and ignored the "sir, that isn't a USB port" warning it gave? <3

Apparently at EA Burnaby they put hot glue in the USB ports. They say it's to help prevent data theft by flash drive, but this makes a lot more sense...

A few quick things to say:

The key to moderation is not moderation. It's a militant attention to detail and a meticulous application of the rules that would do the SS proud. You will not make friends. You will not be liked. Being a mod isn't supposed to be a popularity contest, or a way to protect your friends/allies, or a way to make yourself feel more important. It's supposed to be an unpleasant job you take on for the greater good of the community.

Can a mod post his own opinion on certain matters? Of course. But bear in mind that if you're posting on the flameboard in particular, you'd better be damn sure that you're not either a.) breaking the rules yourself, or b.) allowing the rules to be broken so that you can see what happens. You also can't lock threads that say things you don't want to hear, so long as they don't break any rules. For quite a while, there was the running joke that the easiest way to get a thread locked was to say something bad about Kaizen in it.

Flamebaiting is bad. Many people flamebait. But many people are so defensive and/or highly strung that they'll react to practically any comment as if it were flamebait, regardless of its actual nature.

Derailing is bad. MANY people derail. For a variety of reasons, some in ill-formed attempts at humor (which can be tolerated, within limits), some as part of a pathological inability to keep their dick in their pants when it comes to certain topics. Lavi and TDS, RoM and any attempt to characterize WoW as something other than a divine gift to the gamers of the world, Vang and, well, anything.

Actually, let me amend something. MOST derailing is bad. Occasionally, topics in the flameboard do get derailed into constructive conversations. It happens maybe once every few months that I've noticed, but it does happen. Ideally at that point either the topic will get renamed, split, or reorganized in some fashion. That rarely happens though.

Someone make this person a moderator, pronto. Er... if he... wants to?

I agree with Raes, but there's one major thing being overlooked - QCDN is a forum that is mostly about video games. QCDN is not a serious forum...not to mention that while derails are bad for the most part, they only tend to happen once a thread has lost it's point, or rather, has gone as far as it's going to go.

Most people here will handle a subject, whether it be calling out a thief, or discussing what gear may be best, or chatting about the happenings of real life with the most on-track means they can...but once a threads served it's purpose (or unfortunately had none to begin with), that's when it tends to derail...and that doesn't necessarily "ruin" the thread, nor is it exactly a bad thing. I'd very, very much rather see some people end a thread with some silly wind-down conversation than see a dozen people, backs-turned over not having the same views of something.

Yes, moderation is good, but it shouldn't hafto be some heavily enforced thing. I personally enjoy the ability to be somewhat laid back, to know that many of us can simply forgive after getting wound up after a spat or disagreement. I know not everyone here can drop grudges so easily, but shouldn't that be their own problem, not everyone's?

You want to back that shit up a second? Obviously you've not been paying as much attention to my mood on that crap for quite some time.

For the past month or better i've been doing nothing but playing evenly about WoW with regards to FFXI and the dick contest that arises out of those conversations. Even going so far as to attempt to difuse the bomb before it starts at every opportunity i've had. It's pointless and useless. If you'd like to do a history search it'll become quite clear that at just about every opportunity some (usually within the same group of about 5-10 people) XI player can't keep it in his pants and make a respectful comment one way or the other for the most part.

It's not my intention to go about singing WoW's praises everywhere i go, it is my intention to speak respectfully of each others playgrounds of choice. It's not like i go out of my way to make sure to scream 'I DON'T LIKE FFXI' everywhere i go around here as offensively as possible, i'm still under the assumption people have as much if not more restraint than i do. Most do, a few people who pop up regularly with regards to this on the XI side most certainly do not.

I'm not saying you can't or shouldn't voice an opinion on it. I am saying nobody wants their game trash talked. I don't go half-cocked about XI, i expect the same courtesy with regards to WoW whereas i happen to be involved in the conversation. If you've got something to say make a point and do it respectfully or at least within the confines of logic and be open to criticism or rebuttal, it's just that easy with every topic not just the WoW/FFXI stuff. We're all fanboys here by the very nature of the boards, we get defensive, it happens.

Meanwhile the thread about the PS3 contains no less than 50% out of 70 pages of flames going back and forth between fire, cubs, and baja and ne'ery a mention from anyone. Shocking that you wouldn't mention the tech-heads when it comes to out and out cock-fights over nothing at every opportunity for a good thread. Or the people who crap up the religion, politics, drug, music, movie, game, etc threads. It's not as if you can make an example out of 3 people (vang is not a person, i have it on a good tip he was hatched from an egg.) and say 'well there's your problem.'

If you're going to call me on something make it current events. God knows there's more than enough i've earned a nod and a slap for lately, that's not one of them. :P

When are ya sober bud? hahaha!

DON'T LOCK THE THREAD, FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, SOMETHING INTELLIGENT GOES HERE.

See? This thread got derailed big-time, and it's turned into a productive conversation! '-'b HURRAY FOR DERAILING! WOOOOO.

Maybe we should all swallow our e-peens and just quit complining about all the BS that goes on around here. QCDN isnt a democracy, or a monarchy, its a fucking online game forum. This argument is so blown out of proportion nowadays that you cant go to any area of this site without reading about it. Crying over locked topics and people flaming is essentially useless, because in the end, it just pisses everybody off and drives more people away from this site.

Jeeze, Mish. Way to hit the nail on the head. Kudos to you, darling.

You can't please all of the people all of the time. If you lock threads, people will complain that the thread got locked; if you let them run, people will complain that the thread wasn't locked.

That's where "a militant attention to detail and a meticulous application of the rules" comes into play.

Since you can't please everyone, and people will complain no matter what you do, the best path is simply to enforce the rules. Which means that more threads would probably get locked, and some that people would rather see locked would continue onward, but nobody could honestly complain that they were being treated unfairly.

The downside from the mod's perspective is that you will occasionally piss off your friends, linkshell mates, and people you interact with in game.

One more thing.

You can't expect a mod to read every post in every thread. That's why there's that little button to report posts. I honestly have no idea how that button works from the mod's perspective, I assume it links you directly to the offending post in question. Either way, if you, the users, find something that genuinely offends you or that you consider a violation of the rules, use it.

Don't cry if nothing happens to stop a thread when you haven't even bothered to report it.

It does. It's a really nice system.

But damn, Raesvelg for moderator in '07. Who's with me?

QCDN wouldn't be able to handle the ownage.

When do I get my $20?
