So I'm dinking around in this game again, haven't played it in ages. Like right after 1.10 was put live, ages. Anyway, I'm doing the whole Necromancer thing, because I've never played the class much before. Biggest two characters was a Barbarian and an Amazon. So I figure I'll go with the Act II Mercenary, for Defiance on my summons to keep them up.

Now, for the question. The rune word sets that grant you other classes skills when equipped, say I socket Infinity to a polearm and throw it on my Merc. Will he ever use the Conviction Aura, or does it mean that the ability appears on your skills quickbar, and not that they're automatically used?

Curses. Too bad Exile is Paladin Shields only. Maybe the +14~16 to Defiance could've stacked on to the Mercs. Guess I'll stick with my plan of giving him Destruction, should I ever find a nice 5 socket Elite polearm. Lots of Striking/on Attack effects.

In the case of runewords like Infinity, make sure you're on ladder when making it, or it'll fail. As for your question, when runewords say "Level 12 Conviction Aura When Equipped" then anyone who equips that weapon will have level 12 Conviction on all the time, even hires. The active skills when equipping an item cannot be turned off without taking off the gear and it does not have to be used in the skillbar.

Edit: Double-checked this with the arreat summit, that runeword does grant the aura without having to turn it on, if it were something else that said "+2 to Conviction" it would do nothing on a hire because they can't select skills.

Just to back up Gatt, if you equip a runeword weapon on a merc that says "Grants Level X Aura" it will give that aura to them.

Oh. Awesome. Exactly what I was looking for. And ofcourse I'm ladder. Just got raped by Diablo many times before giving up. Summon Resist isn't high enough(I'm only 27 atm,) so just one fire circle attack wipes out every skeleton and mage.

I couldn't find any information about equipment granted auras outside of how they're granted.

I'm not sure if you've been to the Arreat Summit before (many people haven't, to my shock), but here's a link to it for ya, I always look there when I'm thinking of doing my equipment over when I actually play Diablo II.

Also, the Diablo II Strategy Compendium is quite useful if you want to have a good reference for some of the more hardcore builds, the Hammerdins are usually the most popular for certain reasons. I've seen them put out about 23k damage per hammer with legit gear, my brother actually accomplished such, I never had the patience to trade for all the necessary gear XD.

Edit: In addition, I suggest getting the "Hero Editor" for testing out something that you think may work, you can use it to make a character that has stats/skills set exactly where you want them and you can put whatever gear you want on them, and see how your experimental build willl turn out, it's really useful for plotting out where you'll put your stats/skills at what levels. When using the Hero Editor, I suggest getting all the item packs or you'll be left with nothing to test out equipment changes with. I was going to link to a clean site to get all the files, but I can't find the site I got them from, just send me an email address via PM to send it all to if you wanted to give it a shot, I'd hate to give out a link to a site that I don't trust and have you lose your CD key or something like that.

Note on Hero Editor: it cannot be used for cheating on closed (real) battle.net, the character files are saved server side, you can only edit the saves for your single player characters, so it's only good for testing things out, it's not capable of giving you a maxed-out character except on open (junk) battle.net and in single player, Blizzard and Bnet have been quite open about the policy about modding and such, they only care if you attempt it on closed battle.net.

Yeah, I'm aware of both of those sites. Just couldn't find anything that specifically answered Aura rune words on Mercs.

http://www.d2sector.net/ and http://www.mewgood.com/linktome.shtml is where I used to get some of my item packs. Some are hacked items which won't do you any good if your testing legit gear, so you'll just have to look around. I haven't explored these sites in forever so I don't know if anything changed like things being added or taken out. Theres hero editors on those sites too and different mods.

Haha, farming Mephisto to feed my gambling addiction on my quest for a Wyrmskull/Tarn Helm/+Skills Circlet, I got two Milabrega's Orb kite shields.. One from the first Council Member in Durance of Hate 3, and one from Mephisto himself.

Tried a Meph run with the last character I had left, crap drops as usual XD

I've gotten two uniques, a few sets, and many, many rares. Regular magic items are in the minority. The Coif of Glory from him on my first kill works nicely on my defiance merc.

Speaking of uniques, I've picked up a few items you might put to better use on a Necro than I would on my sorc if you want them Skaw :P
