I've been asking around lately and I can't seem to get an definite answer about this, so I thought it'd be best to ask here.

Is it common for some shells (HNM/endgame and such) to "buy" KS99 orbs in exchange for Black Belt item drops? Is this practice frowned upon, or is this an acceptable alternative to actually going out and joining an HNM shell just to get the items for a Black Belt?

When I say shells "buying" KS99 orbs, I mean that someone brings an orb to the battle and all they lot is the BB item when it drops and the shell keeps the remaining drops to sell or whatever they want to do with them in the end.

Any and all input on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure about BB items, but I know some sky shells will fight Gods for an individual, and the person who provided pops will keep 1 item, and the rest goes to shell who fought. I assume BB items probably wouldn't be any different, assuming you find the right shell.

The belt items aren't 100% from the KS99's, so that would also be a mighty risk.

I assume with KS orbs it would be BB item *or* one item of choice assuming BB doesnt drop. Although personally, not sure how much that would be worth it in a KS where something like Speed Belt could drop. "Hey! BB Item! and... Speed Belt. Hey guys, could I.. uh.. lot that instead? <.<"

Selling KS-orbs for money-items is long since dead. There is no money in it. If orb-supplier picks an item out, the remaining items rarely adds up to 100-200k. Split 10-15 ways, well meh, it barely covers outpost fee lol. I can see BB-items, but only retards would merc a KS99 orb if supplier pics an item out.

Somehow I had the feeling that the current market wouldn't support this sort of thing.

Thanks for input everyone, I think I know what I'll have to do if/when I finally try to get a black belt.

Getting a Black Belt via KSNMs is lame anyways.

For some HNM is not really an option, for lack of time, schedule, dislike for drama, etc.

So then getting a black belt shouldn't be an option for those people, not anyone's fault but SE once again. Letting social gamers enjoy what endgamers work hard for.

What a crock.

If you were *only* bidding on a BB item then shells would probably want a chance to get a free speed belt. Otherwise it doesn't cover the cost of food/choco to get to where ever you are going.

I plan on getting a BB for my MNK, via alternate methods.

But I'm just lazy, right? Since being 1 of 4 NA players with Clothcraft at 100 doesn't count for much, amirite? I work hard in other areas, the HNM scene just isn't for me.

uhhhhhhhhhh....I guess there's never in the history of the game been one person who could do a solo effort like crafting and a cooperative team effort like HNM.

HNM can sometimes drain your gil reserves depending on claim rate when you could be doing other things. Its a sacrifice you take in the hopes of obtaining otherwise unobtainable gear, like a Black Belt. OR, you do both, stop bitching about drama, and put forth the effort in the right facet of the game.

I've rewritten this 10 times now because I'm trying to not be disrespectful outside of the flameboard, but this is just a god awful comparison. Crafting and HNM are on two completely different planets. Waking up to get guild points or hit moon phases is not nearly the same animal, please in the future do not even remotely try to pass it off as something you should be rewarded for.

What it says when you check your equipment, in the lower left-hand corner of the screen underneath GIL: is all you should ever expect from a craft. Black belt items should by no means ever be remotely related.

If you don't wanna put forth the time in the right areas, don't bitch about not having the rewards. If its not fun, then don't do it. Leveling WW wasn't fun, it was a challenge. HNM overall wasn't fun, it was a challenge. If you're not up to the challenge, step away from the plate.

Not to turn this into a flame, but do you have a Job or any sort of RL commitments Jamal?

One thing Ive always wanted in game is a Sorcerer's Petasos. Unfortunately, I work freelance, so my schedule changes very often. So Ill join a Dynamis shell, run for a few months, but before Ive worked my way up in line to be next for a Petasos, my schedule will change and I cant run with the shell anymore. I lose my place in line, and Its back to square one.

But guess what - there are actually ppl in game who are cool who understand that some of us arent drugdealers / stay at home moms / independently wealthy shut-ins / college students, who have nothing but free time to commit to FFXI like its out job. Theyre even willing to help someone out without expecting anything in return!!! Crazy, isnt it???

My advice - find ppl in game who are friendly, understanding, giving, and just play 4 fun. Avoid the ppl who demand you "farm 2am tuesday til 11 pm thursday or you get nutting you noob!" Those tend to be the greedy types who get all the best gear on the backs of others, then disband the shell "becuz of drama"

Its kinda like life that way.

If you still want to do a KS99 for your BB items, I know a LS that will probably help you out without expecting anything in return. They do it to help someone in need and cuz its actually alot of fun to run those fights. PM me or find me in game.

A friend in need is a friend indeed (but a friend with weed is better)!

Holy shit, I ask a simple question and it turns into a pissing contest.

Khajit, your image pretty much describes how the HNM scene in general works has been explained to me, but the opinions I'm getting are probably biased. I'm sure there are legit shells out there claiming on a regular basis, some probably get claims so often that they get accused of botting, I wouldn't know.

Jamal, we've all got our priorities in what we want to do in game, some of us just come to socialize, some come to do everything they can to push their character to the top. Some even just play the game to have cybersex with a catgirl, even if it's played by a guy.

As for the crafting vs. HNM thing, I think the point being made was that sometime shells will be willing to sell certain drops for the right amount of gil, and it's their option to do so. To be honest, if I was any good at making gil, I'd probably arrange to buy the BB items before I even get my MNK to the point of using it, just because I like to be prepared in advance.

Some things in this game are a pain in the ass to get and I'm not a fan of the HNM/sky scene, would rather avoid both at all costs if I can do so. It's nice to hear that some shells are still willing to do the KS99 orb for BB items thing though. I tend to have a chaotic schedule, making it hard for me to keep up with endgame shells and their event times.

None of my responses are against anyone, just putting things in my perspective, I hope I'm not misunderstood as if I were trying to put anyone down or anything of that sort. Some people think that the only way to do things is their way, but that's what is so great about FFXI, there are tons of viable options and tons of options that don't work, there isn't just one right way to do everything in this game despite how it looks.

Relax, it was more sarcasm than anything. I know people in the HNM scene put in their time, and I know crafting is a whole different beast. But statments like "People who don't do HNM for Black Belt don't deserve one" are asinine.

I've run Dynamis with the same shell for over a year, I joined a Salvage shell about 2 months ago. Patience and effort in getting an item is not a problem for me. It took me almost a year before I got my AF2 Petasos, and now I'm gonna keep running to get some AF2 -1. Salvage I'm in for the long haul as well. However, personally, HNMs are not my deal. I can do a few nights a week(luckily Dynamis and Salvage are on same nights), but I don't have the time or desire to do HNM.

How about getting a Black Belt via botting Fafnir?

Didn't you get most of your BB items from Integral? Oh the irony.
