I'm currently having a problem with my pc tower acknowledging that I have my headset plugged into the front panel plugins. (I apologize if my word choice sucks, i'm not exactly sure what to call most of this)

I have the microphone & headphones plugin both available in the front and the back of the pc. The ones in the back work fine, but the ones in the front - nothing.

I only noticed the problem after I had my brother open up the tower and clean out the dust for me. All he did was blow inside and wipe really gently with a paper towel, so that he wouldn't accidentally unplug anything.

I've tried googling a few things, but I can't seem to find anything that will help me figure out why all of a sudden, the plugins in the front panel no longer work. They did up until recently, but now when I plugin my mic set I hear no sound, and no sound goes through (i've tested it on skype calls)

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance ><

The front panel audio is usually connected to the motherboard with littly shitty jumpers. Very easy to pull out accidentally, I'd open it back up and check that all wires coming from the front of the box are still connected to the motherboard somewhere.

If it helps, looking at a motherboard from the side panel of a box the audio connection jumper pins are usually towards the far left side and vertically in the middle of the board.

Other than that, if there's an audio software that came with your drivers it could be recognizing the rear input and output as a default, and overriding the identity of the front input/output.

Best of luck!

Thanks, I'll have a look and see if that's what happened.

(If it happens to be the latter, do you know how I can "undo" the settings so that the drivers are not recognizing the rear input/output as default?)

the software should have an option that allows the front jacks to override the back youll just have to look around for it. i doubt that is the problem though it sounds more like the connection is broke. for future reference dont clean the dust out with a paper towel only use compressed air. your hands shouldnt be anywhere near the motherboard unless you are grounded.

QFT, one shock to that motherboard and you kill it.

I didn't have any compressed air gadget at the time, but i'll keep that in mind if I need to clean it out in the future.

I have a feeling it might be the connection as well, but I seem to recall that when I first got my pc (it was custom built at a pc shop) I remember not being able to use any of the front panel plugins (including the USB one) and so I never bothered using it period. Then a couple of months ago for whatever reason, I just decided to try it out and everything worked. It was really weird. o.O

I'll be opening it up a little later today when I can get some extra help to see if anything is unplugged. I'm extremely paranoid of touching something I shouldn't ><

You either blew the ports or they are turned off in your BIOS

What is a BIOS? @_@

Basic Input/Output system.

It's basically what recognizes all your shit and finds your boot, but I doubt thats the problem. More than likely a cord just got knocked loose.

Its a different key per company but ya... its definately something a novice should go nowhere near. There's always a possibility that the memory is corrupted in those ports. The only way to tell is if they work using another device.

I opened up the tower, and we checked the cords and nothing seemed out of place.

Something I think is worth mentioning though, because I never noticed this before... is that I now have a microphone icon (Realtek HD Audio Manager) on my bottom right hand corner. When I open this, I get a a green window with "Asus" at the top showing me various input/output connections. It will show me when I have the mic/speakers setup through the back, but it doesn't show anything being hooked up to the front even when I do plugin my headset. I don't ever recall seeing this icon available before.

I have a feeling that somehow the settings have been changed so that my panel in the front can no longer be read, but i'm not too sure how to set everything back to "default".

So yeah, if that makes any sense and anyone has any other suggestions to offer please send them my way. I'd really like to use my front panel again ; ;
