Questions for the Beastmasters

Where's the best starting city for a BST? I'd assume Windhurst..?

Probably your home town. Just because it’ll be familiar to you. I agree with Neyla that you could just treat it like you treat any other job 1-10. I remember my whm bustin some good damage with a staff at that lvl.

“Charm” is a neat chaotic /ja and it’s fun to play around with at lvl 1 if you want to.

Most people say to start charming at lvl 10 because you have so few abilities to help you out when mischarms happen. Also it’s a given that you’ll be outdamaging your pet at those lower lvl’s so hate is a very fragile line.

The higher lvl you are, the more powerful your pet is. It’ll to the point where you feel like an xp leech while your pet out-damages/out-tanks you.

I kinda derailed from your question. I think I was trying to make a point that bst will feel like a very weak job at first, with not much to offer. Stick it out and it gets a ton better.

Oh, quick tip: Get your OP’s done.

Are beastmasters useful for endgame shells? Dynamis, sea, G-ds, etc etc?

No, but generally speaking BSTs don't care about any of it. They also tend to have jobs that are useful for those events. Most of the BSTs I know are high level BRDs, RDMs or BLMs. On other servers all BST linkshells kill wyrms, HNMs and various gods, but there's nothing like that on Quetzy.

Areas like Dynamis and Sea are without charmables, so we're limited to jug pets for those. Sky, on the other hand, has those lovely birds flying around which can be charmed and turned loose on the gods. BST can be handy for some endgame stuff, like crowd control at Tiamat.

There's an all-BST linkshell on another server which recently took down Suzaku with 9 BSTs; they brought along a WHM (for R3 in case they screwed up) a THF (for TH2) and a RDM/DRK for Chainspell+Stun. That's the sort of thing I would LOVE to try some day.

Really, people who play BST do it because they love it and appreciate the challenge it brings, not to mention the fact that they can XP any time they want and generally don't have to depend on anyone else for anything (they can solo normal mobs and NMs other jobs can't and get more Beastman/Kindred seals than any other job). People interested in endgame should look elsewhere, though if your BST is high enough to wear AF2 and you're in a good Dynamis shell, you'll pretty much have no competition for the Monster set.

Best kindof pet, in my opinion, are the Mandragora-type mobs; they hit for roughly 2/3 the power of other charmable mobs, but they hit twice, which usually ends in higher overall damage. They're tougher to charm than other mobs, though. Funguar-type mobs have pretty high attack but low defense, so they're relatively good as pets (and most zones have some type of mob that intimdates them, so they can be XPed off of as well - though their breathe attacks can be disasterous...)

Crabs I don't recommend too well, unless you're fighting a self-destructing mob (Goblin); they have high defense but not-too-great attack/evasion, which doesn't matter too much in low levels like Qufim but at 50+ this turns into very long fights, which isn't all that great.

In the 10s/20s range, Worms are wonderful XP. Maze of Shakrami, Korroloka and Qufim all have access to Bats, which despite being intimidated by Worms, tend to rip them apart. Bats are also useful vs Skeletons (their attacks are blunt-type, and they're strong vs Dark-based moves such as Black Cloud/Blood Saber), but I personally avoiding fighting undead for most of my career.

There's two tricks to getting/keeping pets you like. One, if you already have a good pet, is simply using Leave at it's general spawn area and letting it heal to full before you use that particular pet again (doesn't work well if you XP off of mobs who have DoT/enfeeb abilities, though, as they may still be on that pet the next time you grab it)

The second way, is to Leave the pet in an area where it would despawn and see if it pops in a more suitable level range (or if it's too high, sometime there's the option of simply killing it for XP, but the only time I've seen this as a good option was in Lufaise off of Sheep)

That's all I can think of right now...

How did I miss such a great thread?!! lol.

If anyone has any future questions or needs any bst advice, feel free to hit me up anytime in-game or on this message board.

This is why ive been thinking of starting a new BST char on shiva. I so want to join LotB. Hell ill even start up an endgame bst shell once i hit 75 here... But seeing as how anything I try to plan flops by all the no shows

In case it hasn't been tossed out there at all, Duoing is personally, one of the best things that could happen with Beastmaster.

I solo'd up until around 45 I think it was, then I met my duo partner Souledge. Stuck with him up until the 70s range and we're great friends now. If you're lucky to find someone who you can meet as a static duo, it gets really easy. You get to know eachothers thinking patterns, so it makes leveling as BST 100x easier, better, and FUNNER! (/new word)

And also, in case it hasn't been mentioned earlier, your jug pets don't take xp away from a party, and neither yourself either from what I hear, so if you do wanna take it to a full party, bring jug pets, they rock hardcore.

I've been a BST in sky and dynamis, and soon to be limbus. I can say that sadly, we are pretty pathetically (sp) boring up there. I go as /whm cause I'm working on nin currently but I don't do much besides let carrie attack things and do backup healing. In dynamis...I honestly usually just watched television cause I rarely hit things due to lag issues. Don't think I'm a bad BST, I just sent Carrie after things. =p Much easier. XD

xoxo Best of luck on BST, it's a great thing!

I think BST's best bet in sky is hoping for a 1k Needles off Sabotender Amigo. And of course, that won't really have any chance of working on Kirin...

Its been mentioned, bst groups have taken down sky gods before as well as COP Wyrms.

CC and Chuck are pretty good damage dealers against Kirin. With the addition of beast roll for corsair, i'd really like to see how much accuracy it adds to those pets. The fact that it also available when using Corsair as a SJ could open people's eyes to some of the strengths of BST.

Amigo is a waste of money.

Yeah, I'll be honest and say I've never actually really used Amigo at all, far too expensive for this poor lil taru. ; ;

It's so funny how BST's jump on any topic relating to ourselves!! It goes to show how much we love the job. From what I noticed about our server, there are quite a few lvl 70+ BST's. Once over the weekend I did a /sea all 72-75 BSTand there were at least 32 that popped up. There are more BST's on our server than you could imagine. I think we've grown accustomed to soloing, no one has ever thought to organize events to take down any HNM's. But if someone ever did, I'm sure most if not all BST's would jump at the chance to do something like that.

But in any case, for those that are now leveling BST here are a few tips:

1. Flint Caviar is great for BST. Relatively cheap with good +CHR stats. Ginger cookies also are great for fast MP gains.
2. Self destructing MOBs (bombs, gobs, dolls <---- i hate dolls) are great for XP chains. Worms are also great if you know where to find them.
3. If you solo, be careful of MOBs that petrify (Cockatrice, Dolls, Lizards)
4. BLM-type MOBs are soft and squishy. If your pet has hate, you can easily avoid any -ga spells IF YOU ARE DIRECTLY BEHIND THEM. I was fighting POTS in sky this way.
5. Use the terrain to your advantage.... hug walls, use stairs, climb hills, go around trees. The MOB never follows you the same way if you hug walls. It navigates itself like Carby following a SMN.

If I think of anymore, I'll post them.

Looong ago when I was leveling my bst, there were about 3 linkshells made up of all bst, they did some amazing things. Also saw on another server Tiamat being rapped by an all bst and smn alliance.

Beastmaster is an amazing class, I'm sure you will enjoy it if you can withstand the "manmaker" pains it comes with. Also, try to be as nice to pt's as you can even if you're in the right are if they are owning you. You'll run accross parties that just completly hate you likely, I think that was the worst part of bst for me. If a party kills off the mobs you are using as pets while you are fighting.. well, you pretty much are screwed. (Bibiki bay.... bst hell.)

My favorite part of the job has been being able to level in places no one ever visits. Bost. Oubl. comes to mind before the big nerf of 05.

My partner and I are now leveling in a remote corner of Mamook. There is absolutely no one there to compete with. Getting to level in places like Attohwa Chasm, Upper Delkfutts, Ifrits Cauldron is very nice.

I agree, and I'm sure it's no coincidence. S-E did it I'm purpose to reduce the tension caused by bst and parties xping in the same spot.

However, from time to time I had little alternate choices on where to xp,some of the best xp spots require me being in an area where people tend to xp, and some good bst camps are also viable for normal parties but they just don't often go there. I remember I was in a pretty damn secluded xp spot in quicksands, and a party walks in and camps on top of me. You can't imagine how suprised I was, and I was extremely tempted to think someone was plotting against my bst getting any higher lol.

My favorite thing about the class is being able to xp whenever I feel like it, instead of placing it in someone else's hand. That freedom feels good, and it's something I'm sure a lot of bst enjoy.

Playing Bst is a more traditional way for exp as in the other ffxi games, i pt as much as I solo >.>

Its a lot like rdm with a nin sub only a bit more downtime. Controling stuff is fun.

It makes you proud that your one of the few jobs that can pull stuff like this off where it takes a pt to take a vt down.

Sure it may not all be your muscle, but it's all your skill in controlling mobs

I promise you my bst can kill a tough and VT faster then my Rdm/nin can, lol.
And even though the direct strengh is not yours, it's your pet's, it is still YOUR power that is controlling that pet, so it is your muscle.

Just because a 3 year old is..well a 3 year doesn't mean he doesn't have power if he can control people's mind and will and has the intelligence to have them do.. stuff.. like rob banks.. damnit you get the point.
